Download or read book The Day the Animals Broke Their Code of Silence written by Caroline Kushner and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2007-04-24 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Day the Animals Broke Their Code of Silence was written for children to enjoy and for adults to appreciate. It is a tale full of adventure, humor, and lots of love. When children listen to the book they often have many questions about interpersonal relationships and seem to become more aware and sensitive to other people's feelings. I have my master's degree in social work, and have worked with children. I don't believe in talking down to kids and because of that the book was written on a higher reading level than most children are used to. The content of the words is easily figured out through the descriptive language. Parents will stay interested and kids will increase their vocabulary while their imaginations will come to life. Children will vividly be able to depict the scenes in their minds. Follow Zachary Dawn and his cat Muffin through the forest where they encounter many adventures including running away from wild beasts and a tornado before finally making their way to safety. On their journey they learn many valuable moral lessons. I would like to thank my family for all their encouragement and assistance in writing this book. My husband Michael was my photographer. My sons Gabe Kushner and Warren Kushner gave me my inspiration. I would like to thank Gabe Kushner for his original oil painting and for being my star actor. Sincerely, Caroline Kushner

Book Synopsis Mississippi Barking by : Chris McLaughlin
Download or read book Mississippi Barking written by Chris McLaughlin and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2021-08-26 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On August 29, 2005, the worst natural disaster in the history of the United States devastated the city of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast of Louisiana and Mississippi. Like many others in America and around the world, Chris McLaughlin watched the tragedy of Katrina unfold on a television screen from the comfort of her living room on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. In the devastation afterwards, almost 2,000 people and an estimated 250,000 animals had perished. Miraculously, many pets did manage to survive. But in the months that followed the hurricane, thousands of them were fending for themselves in the ruins of devastated neighborhoods. They roamed the streets in feral packs or struck out alone. Their plight triggered a grassroots rescue effort unlike any this country had ever seen, and while relief organizations such as the Red Cross were tending to the human survivors, and movie stars and celebrities were airlifting food and endorsing seven-figure checks, a much smaller and meagerly funded effort was underway to save the four-legged victims. With no prior experience in disaster response and no real grasp of the hell that awaited them, scores of animal lovers, including McLaughlin, made their way to the Gulf Coast to help in any way they could. Including photos from four-time Pulitzer Prize–winning photojournalist Carol Guzy, Mississippi Barking spans the course of two years as McLaughlin and others ventured into the wreckage of the Gulf Coast to rescue the animals left behind. McLaughlin tells the moving stories of the people she met along the way, both those who lost everything to the hurricane and those working beside her rescuing and transporting animals away from the neglected, derelict conditions in which they barely survived. Within this story of tragedy and cruelty, suffering and ignorance, Mississippi Barking also bears witness to selfless acts of bravery and compassion, and the beauty and heroics of those who risked everything to save the animals that could not save themselves.

Book excerpt: The book Friendly Fire was created because many soldiers are killed on the battlefield by friendly fire. In addition, in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947, there was a space ship crash and Aliens were abducted. The secrecy of the story has created much controversy in the world in which we live. This story is about the crash and the U.S. government trying to find the Aliens who were abducted. The story creates another concept how the actual story could have happened. There is a hero in the story named Friendly Fire. He is the supreme commander of Tron. He leads his forces in the battle to fight evil. The space frontier is challenged by the evil Premators who spread evil. The Ice Force is challenged by fighting evil to make good prevail. A certain number of planets called the Qyrad try to overcome the evil Trox. A girl from the planet Earth and an ex-intelligence officer work together to get the original Aliens back. The Earth duo works at keeping a war from starting with an Alien government. The heroic characters and all of the forces of evil shows that there is foreign life in space and Earth is only a small size in the big universe. May the force be with you.

Book Synopsis The Soundscape by : R. Murray Schafer
Download or read book The Soundscape written by R. Murray Schafer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1993-10-01 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The soundscape--a term coined by the author--is our sonic environment, the ever-present array of noises with which we all live. Beginning with the primordial sounds of nature, we have experienced an ever-increasing complexity of our sonic surroundings. As civilization develops, new noises rise up around us: from the creaking wheel, the clang of the blacksmith’s hammer, and the distant chugging of steam trains to the “sound imperialism” of airports, city streets, and factories. The author contends that we now suffer from an overabundance of acoustic information and a proportionate diminishing of our ability to hear the nuances and subtleties of sound. Our task, he maintains, is to listen, analyze, and make distinctions. As a society we have become more aware of the toxic wastes that can enter our bodies through the air we breathe and the water we drink. In fact, the pollution of our sonic environment is no less real. Schafer emphasizes the importance of discerning the sounds that enrich and feed us and using them to create healthier environments. To this end, he explains how to classify sounds, appreciating their beauty or ugliness, and provides exercises and “soundwalks” to help us become more discriminating and sensitive to the sounds around us. This book is a pioneering exploration of our acoustic environment, past and present, and an attempt to imagine what it might become in the future.

Book excerpt: A colorful, magical tale set during the height of the Ottoman Empire, from the acclaimed author of The Island of Missing Trees (a Reese's Book Club Pick) Chosen for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall’s “Reading Room” Book Club In this novel, Turkey’s preeminent female writer spins an epic tale spanning nearly a century in the life of the Ottoman Empire. In 1540, twelve-year-old Jahan arrives in Istanbul. As an animal tamer in the sultan’s menagerie, he looks after the exceptionally smart elephant Chota and befriends (and falls for) the sultan’s beautiful daughter, Princess Mihrimah. A palace education leads Jahan to Mimar Sinan, the empire’s chief architect, who takes Jahan under his wing as they construct (with Chota’s help) some of the most magnificent buildings in history. Yet even as they build Sinan’s triumphant masterpieces—the incredible Suleymaniye and Selimiye mosques—dangerous undercurrents begin to emerge, with jealousy erupting among Sinan’s four apprentices. A memorable story of artistic freedom, creativity, and the clash between science and fundamentalism, Shafak’s intricate novel brims with vibrant characters, intriguing adventure, and the lavish backdrop of the Ottoman court, where love and loyalty are no match for raw power.
