Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Patriots' Day: Lexington and Concord, April 19, 1775; With Poems Brought Out on the First Observation of the Anniversary Holiday and the Forms in Which It Was Celebrated The bill abolishing the practice of appointing annually a day of "fasting and prayer," having passed the Massachusetts House of Representatives, received the approving vote of the Senate on March 16, 1894, and was on the same day signed by the governor, Frederic T. Greenhalge. The bill also established the nineteenth day of April as an annual holiday. The latter, therefore, is the legitimate successor of Fast Day, which had come to be observed chiefly by its desecration. The first proclamation of the new holiday was issued on the eleventh day of April, 1894, and gave it, most appropriately, the name Patriots Day. Neither the statute nor the proclamation prescribed any definite form of celebration; consequently, there is ample scope and freedom for the preferences of communities and organizations in its observance. The proclamation was as follows: - "By an act of the Legislature, duly approved, the nineteenth day of April has been made a legal holiday. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battle of April 19, 1775: In Lexington, Concord, Lincoln, Arlington, Cambridge, Somerville But the student in American local history needs a more extensive view of the Operations of that day. He needs to be better informed as to the various scenes of carnage that were waged along all Of those nearly twenty miles Of highway. Men were slain in Lexington and in Concord; but there were many others slain in Lincoln, in Arlington, in Cambridge, and in Somerville. Nor should we forget the young est martyr oi the day, but fourteen years of age, who fell in Charlestown. For the purpose, then, Of presenting to such as may be interested, I have assembled here the most comprehensive account that has ever been Offered, and one that aims to be a history of the entire day. I have endeavored to make it not only complete and interesting, but just and reliable, recognizing fully the rights of my own ancestors to rebel, and also recognizing the rights Of the mother country to prevent such rebellion - even by an appeal to arms. Since those days we have grown to be a mother country ourselves, and have had reason, on more than one occasion, to exercise that accepted right of parental control. This narrative is based upon Official reports, sworn statements, diaries, letters, and narratives Of partici pants and Witnesses; upon accounts of local histo rians and national orators; and, in a few cases, upon tradition, if such seemed authentic and trustworthy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a minute-by-minute account, this popular book gives a vivid picture of what actually happened on April 19, 1775. "Tourtellot's book is the best account we have of the day of Lexington and Concord. The actions of each individual who played a conspicuous part in the day's work are minutely traced but Mr. Tourtellot never loses the main thread of his narrative and the wealth of detail he has included gives substance and color to an exciting story."— J. C. Miller, New York Herald Tribune Book Review "Tourtellot does not let his 19th of April float up in the spring air unconnected with a past or a future. He has built in very skillfully the story of the months before that day and then sends its echoes rolling on through time—and into distant states and nations....No other book generally available performs an even remotely comparable job....Makes full use of old material, adds a good deal that has come to light in the intervening years and, standing firmly on its own base, presents magnificently for the general reader and the specialist this immortal opening chapter of our beginnings as a nation."—Bruce Lancaster, The Saturday Review "The result of thoughtful examination of the evidence and clear writing."—Walter Muir Whitehill, New England Quarterly "An absorbing and vital history, containing much newly published information about a crucial week in the history of the United States. "—J.M. Goodsell, Christian Science Monitor

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "shot heard round the world" that ignited the American Revolution was fired when a passing force of British soldiers encountered a colonial militia on the village green in Lexington, Massachusetts. Who fired that shot? The British claimed it was an American; the Americans insisted on the opposite. Many romantic legends about embattled colonists and ruthless redcoats arose in the succeeding years. This was the first book to critically examine and debunk some of the fictions surrounding the events of April 19, 1775, and it was hailed by American Heritage magazine as "probably the most forceful single revision of a major episode in American history." Historian Harold Murdock drew upon extensive documentary evidence in assembling this study, including written accounts that only came to light decades after the war. His fascinating insights include interpretations of a series of artistic representations of the confrontation, beginning with a near-contemporary depiction of the colonials in full retreat that's eventually supplanted by a portrait of the Americans' bold defiance. Readers will find the factual accounts of this concise and witty history as heroic and dramatic as any myth.
