Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I think Ive been composing silly rhymes forever. Its in my genes. I can remember as a child, sitting with my family in front of a log fire where we often composed together, short, slightly wacky poems. These sessions frequently started as a result of one or other of us needing help with a school poetry project. I must say, it was a lot of fun and some were rather good. I think one was written for my brother about the school bus, based on the man from Snowy river. My first published poem was in the School Magazine written at the ripe old age of 13 was about a cannibal. I was very proud. Much later in life, a bad job and boredom started me off again, and soon these rhymes began to collect in a pile in my desk. Inspiration may hit me on a train, bus or a waiting room. These rhymes were originally really only written for my own amusement. The cartoons followed later. I was diagnosed with Early Parkinsons disease 9 years ago. Naturally this was a shock but I have since adjusted to the idea and although this has put some restrictions on my physical abilities, it has not curbed my active imagination. Samantha McCulloch

Book Synopsis Rethinking Teaching by : Mickey Kolis

Book excerpt: Rethinking Teaching is based upon one very simple idea - teachers teach people. That very simple idea is expressed as "Teachers as Collaborative Leaders." Teachers wishing to redefine how they work in the classroom must focus on three key ideas: 1) They must build and maintain relationships with and among their students, 2) They must view Content as the foundation for personal learning (not the end product), and 3) When people change (and learn), they get to keep much of what they already know and can do. Veteran teacher Mickey Kolis provides the background information to implement those three key ideas as well as skills to make them work in the classroom. He also offers a mechanism to manage that change process: a 3 (changes) in 30 (days) model.

Download or read book Monsters written by Claire Dederer and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2024-04-23 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK • NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A timely, passionate, provocative, blisteringly smart interrogation of how we make and experience art in the age of cancel culture, and of the link between genius and monstrosity. Can we love the work of controversial classic and contemporary artists but dislike the artist? "A lively, personal exploration of how one might think about the art of those who do bad things" —Vanity Fair • "[Dederer] breaks new ground, making a complex cultural conversation feel brand new." —Ada Calhoun, author of Also a Poet From the author of the New York Times best seller Poser and the acclaimed memoir Love and Trouble, Monsters is “part memoir, part treatise, and all treat” (The New York Times). This unflinching, deeply personal book expands on Claire Dederer’s instantly viral Paris Review essay, "What Do We Do with the Art of Monstrous Men?" Can we love the work of artists such as Hemingway, Sylvia Plath, Miles Davis, Polanski, or Picasso? Should we? Dederer explores the audience's relationship with artists from Michael Jackson to Virginia Woolf, asking: How do we balance our undeniable sense of moral outrage with our equally undeniable love of the work? Is male monstrosity the same as female monstrosity? And if an artist is also a mother, does one identity inexorably, and fatally, interrupt the other? In a more troubling vein, she wonders if an artist needs to be a monster in order to create something great. Does genius deserve special dispensation? Does art have a mandate to depict the darker elements of the psyche? And what happens if the artist stares too long into the abyss? Highly topical, morally wise, honest to the core, Monsters is certain to incite a conversation about whether and how we can separate artists from their art. “Monsters leaves us with Dederer’s passionate commitment to the artists whose work most matters to her, and a framework to address these questions about the artists who matter most to us." —The Washington Post A Best Book of the Year: The New York Times, NPR, The Washington Post, The New Yorker, Vulture, Elle, Esquire, Kirkus

Download or read book Ready or Not! #1 written by Megan E. Bryant and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From prolific author Megan E. Bryant comes the first book in a young middle-grade series about nine-year-old Abby, a girl trying to grapple with all the chaos that can come from growing up. For nine-year-old Abby McAdams, everything seems to be changing. Her cousin and best friend, Zoe, has moved across the country, her mom is going back to work, and Abby is stuck in the only after-school activity still available--running--which she absolutely loathes. Her perspective on the world is changing, too, after an encounter in her community sheds light on the issue of homelessness in her town. On top of everything, sudden changes in Abby's body mean she has to deal with things like deodorant, bras, and uncomfortable conversations. And without her best friend by her side, she's not sure she can handle it all. She's not a grown-up yet, but she definitely doesn't feel like a little kid anymore. She's Abby, in between. Ready or Not! is an accessible and positive exploration of the early stages of puberty, and is the perfect pairing to nonfiction guides like The Care and Keeping of You: The Body Book for Younger Girls.
