Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dawn of Day This book was written in the spare moments at night, after each day's work had been done, and was begun January first, and completed February fifteenth. During this month and a half of writing I felt that the dawn of a new day was at hand, but little realized that it was the dawn of heaven's day for my dear father who had given his sight for his country and had lived in darkness so many years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Day Dawn, or the Gospel in Type and Prophecy The prefaces oi' the former editions of this work express its general scope and the object of sending it forth. These are still the same; and the ten years since its htat publication have given many evidences that the great system of Bible truth which it presents is well adapted to secure the object desired - to bring light and joy to otherwise dark and sad hearts. How very many have given expression of gratitude to God that in answer to prayer for more light on his Word and the des tiny of mankind, the day Dsws came to them! Such testimonies have been a great encouragement to the writer, and with the continued demand for the book, have been the motive in preparing this third edition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from At Dawn of Day: Thoughts for the Morning Hour It is fitting that a sister of the compiler of "Between the Lights" should prepare its companion volume. Our scrap-books were enjoyed together, and every treasure of prose or poetry found in our reading each shared with the other. It has been a delight to feel that she is glad to have me take up the work which she laid down, and try to bear to others the same help and comfort. "Between the lights," at close of day, we seek "rest and refreshment" of soul. At dawn of day, we need to seek strength and guidance for the coming hours. God gives this help by His own Word, and through the words of the good of different ages, climes, and faiths, who have known His indwelling life. May every page of this book be found fraught with ministering messages to keep us in the love and "fear of the Lord all the day long"! Book excerpt: Excerpt from Until the Dawn The way is long and I am far from home, And fast the day Is hasting to its close: yet sweet there comes Across my way, A whisper as if God did say to me, "My grace alway shall be sufficient for thee." And thus the night becomes as brightest day, Since He, my Lord. Vouchsates to lead me in this kindly way, And trusting God; That still, small voice is ever whispering me: "My grace always shall be sufficient for thee." In vale of tears or on grand Pisgah heights, He is my staff: And for my thirst the living rock He smites, That I may quaff; Nor hunger, cold or want while he doth lead me "His grace alway, shall be sufficient for me." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Castle of Dawn, Vol. 1 Should you glance from your car window at the proper point on the great plains of North Dakota, a giant tree with no others Within miles of it may attract your attention, and should the porter be versed in the lore of that section, he would tell you how on one winter's day a man was hanged there because it was alleged that he had stolen a horse. His protestations were vain. It was too cold to bother with a prisoner when a tree was so temptingly near, and so his lifeless body was found dangling, half an hour later, by a man who had ridden hard to inform the posse that, after all, the horse had not been stolen. Had a bird not dropped a seed there long years before, there would have been no tree and a man's life would not have gone out in injustice. Such is the power of trivialities. He has, however, used freely two books dealing with land boom days. These are T. S. Van Dyke's Millionaires of a Day; and T. R. Sanford's The Bursting of a Boom. From Van Dyke's really classic description the psychological sequence has been followed very closely; and from the Sanford book some of the auctioneer "patter" has been lifted bodily. This has been done with full appreciation and gratitude: and the author wishes here to record his indebtedness. The path is too dark. Even Ingersoll would have us believe: As long as we love, we shall hope; and when one dies, we say, 'we hope to meet again.' This proves that there is a voice within us that cannot be silenced. Even amid life's sound and fury we verify the words of Wordsworth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Day Dawn and the Rain: And Other Sermons The following Sermons have been given to the press chiefly for the sake of those whom the author was ao customed to address by the living voice, and whom he can, at present, reach but seldom through that means. His purpose will be served if the volume helps them in the way of remembrance, and more than served if, through God's blessing, it shall prove of any use beyond their circle. Most of the Sermons, though not all, have been preached, and the exception is referred to in order to account for some of them exceeding the limits which are ordinarily assigned to spoken discourse. The sub jects have not been selected with any attempt at unity in the illustration of Christian doctrine or duty. An effort has rather been made to secure a variety of topics. When human knowledge and life are Spreading out into ever wider circuits, the Christian ministry must seek to show itself a debtor to men of every class and char acter, and must endeavor to prove that there is no de partment of thought or action which cannot be touched by that Gospel which is the manifold wisdom of God. The more we study the way of God's commandments, the more shall we find it as broad as his other works, and increasingly rich to meet all the developments of human nature. At the same time, it is hoped that theunity sought to be indicated by beginning and ending the volume with Christ Jesus, is not merely and that, whatever may be the theme, it will be seen and felt to base itself on that One Foundation, and to strive, though all imperfectly, after the excellency of his knowledge.
