Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dartmouth, 1885-6, Vol. 7 The cane rush originated in the struggle which occurred between the Freshmen and Sophomores, while the latter were attempting to defend their own fancied rights and to limit those of the former. Early in our history the emblems of superiority, the plug hat and the cane, became the bone of contention between the Opposing classes. Wounded pride sought redress in a trial of physical strength. Later the extemporized squabble developed into the organized rush, the occurrence of which in both cases marked the transition from the restricted Freshman to the privileged collegian. Whatever may be our attachment to honored customs, we certainly must commend the posi tion that the Sophomores have taken in this matter; and we prophesy that in the near fu ture every friend of Dartmouth will rejoice in her release from an uncalled for and not praise worthy custom. Book Synopsis It Can't Happen Here by : Sinclair Lewis
Download or read book It Can't Happen Here written by Sinclair Lewis and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-01-07 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The novel that foreshadowed Donald Trump’s authoritarian appeal.”—Salon It Can’t Happen Here is the only one of Sinclair Lewis’s later novels to match the power of Main Street, Babbitt, and Arrowsmith. A cautionary tale about the fragility of democracy, it is an alarming, eerily timeless look at how fascism could take hold in America. Written during the Great Depression, when the country was largely oblivious to Hitler’s aggression, it juxtaposes sharp political satire with the chillingly realistic rise of a president who becomes a dictator to save the nation from welfare cheats, sex, crime, and a liberal press. Called “a message to thinking Americans” by the Springfield Republican when it was published in 1935, It Can’t Happen Here is a shockingly prescient novel that remains as fresh and contemporary as today’s news. Includes an Introduction by Michael Meyer and an Afterword by Gary Scharnhorst

Book excerpt: The Getty Museum's collection of drawings was begun in 1981 with the purchase of a Rembrandt nude and has since become an important repository of European works from the fifteenth through the nineteenth century. As in the first volume devoted to the collection (published in 1988 in English and Italian editions), the text is here organized first by national school, then alphabetically by artist, with individual works arranged chronologically. For each drawing, the authors provide a discussion of the work's style, dating, iconography, and relationship to other works, as well as provenance and a complete bibliography.

Book Synopsis The Book of the Damned by : Charles Fort
Download or read book The Book of the Damned written by Charles Fort and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Time travel, UFOs, mysterious planets, stigmata, rock-throwing poltergeists, huge footprints, bizarre rains of fish and frogs-nearly a century after Charles Fort's Book of the Damned was originally published, the strange phenomenon presented in this book remains largely unexplained by modern science. Through painstaking research and a witty, sarcastic style, Fort captures the imagination while exposing the flaws of popular scientific explanations. Virtually all of his material was compiled and documented from reports published in reputable journals, newspapers and periodicals because he was an avid collector. Charles Fort was somewhat of a recluse who spent most of his spare time researching these strange events and collected these reports from publications sent to him from around the globe. This was the first of a series of books he created on unusual and unexplained events and to this day it remains the most popular. If you agree that truth is often stranger than fiction, then this book is for you"--Taken from Good Reads website.
