Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dalton Laboratory Plan This book is an attempt to answer the questions of teachers and schools about the Dalton Laboratory Plan. The plan is new. It has been in operation in one school for eighteen months and in two others for a little over one year. Therefore, it is not possible to present it as a tested and proved "system," or to say that it must be arranged in such and such a fashion. It is better that it should be so; for education will never be static. It must develop and change with the increase of human knowledge and the changes in society. As long as man develops, his education must develop. Miss Parkhurst has suggested an arrangement of the school building and program that seems to give children some of the things they need to grow up successful adults in the world of to-day. Though she has a strong personal bias on the curriculum, the plan itself does not dictate what facts or subjects children must study. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking study of progressive education in the United States describes the implementation and impact of the Dalton Laboratory Plan, a project-based approach to learning developed at the Dalton School in New York City. The authors argue that the Dalton Plan encourages creativity, critical thinking, and responsible citizenship, and provide detailed examples of the plan in action. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education on the Dalton Plan I wish to take this opportunity of expressing my gratitude for the unfailing sympathy and support accorded to me and my work by the Parents' Committee, and the Faculty of the Children's University School; by Ernest Jackman, Principal of the Dalton High School; to Dr. M. V. O'Shea of Wisconsin University; to Miss Helen Hutchins Weist, who has assisted me in England and America; and to Mr. John Macrae, Vice President of E. P. Dutton & Co., whose interest and foresight brought out Miss Evelyn Dewey's book on the Dalton Laboratory Plan, giving to the educational public the first literature on the Dalton Plan. Among those to whom I am indebted in England for advice and encouragement are Sir Michael Sadler, Mr. Edmond Holmes, Dr. C. W. Kimmins, and Professor T. P. Nunn, who has kindly contributed the introduction to this book. My thanks are also due to Miss Rosa Bassett who was the first to introduce the plan in the largest girls' secondary school in London, and to Mr. John Eades, head master of a large boys' school in Leeds, who have contributed valuable accounts of experiments with the Dalton Laboratory Plan. Book excerpt: The Dalton School, an independent, progressive school on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, was founded in 1919 by Helen Parkhurst. Influenced by educational leaders such as Maria Montessori, Frederic Burk, Carlton Washburne, and John Dewey, Helen Parkhurst established a child-centered, progressive school which attempted to incorporate the notion of a democratic community within the boundaries of an educational program. This innovative program became known as The Dalton Plan. In this book, Susan F. Semel tells the story of The Dalton School from its earliest beginnings through the present day. Her story traces the history of progressive education within the walls of The Dalton School, focusing on the school's heads, including Charlotte Durham, Donald Barr and Gardner Dunnan. During certain periods of the school's history, as progressive education waxed and waned in the educational community at large and as educators responded to demands for more content-based curriculum, The Dalton Plan was modified. At other times, the school was impervious to the infusion of current educational thought. Consequently, during some periods of its history, The Dalton School was on the cutting edge of educational reform while, during others, the school swam against the tide of «alternative education» or neo-progressivism to favor a traditional back-to-basics approach. Ultimately, Semel uses the original Dalton Plan as a yardstick by which to measure what has happened to progressive education in the larger world. While Susan Semel concludes that The Dalton School, in its present state, is not the same school that Helen Parkhurst founded, it still employs an educational program that pays attention to the needs of a multicultural society and reconfirms the spirit of child-centered pedagogy as an important concern of the Dalton community.

Book excerpt: Interest in progressive education and feminist pedagogy has gained a significant following in current educational reform circles. Founding Mothers and Others examines the female founders of progressive schools and other female educational leaders in the early twentieth century and their schools or educational movements. All of the women led remarkable lives and their legacies are embedded in education today. The book examines the lessons to be learned from their work and their lives. The book also analyzes whether their leadership styles support contemporary feminist theories of leadership that argue women administrators tend to be more inclusive, democratic, and caring than male administrators. Through an examination of these women, this book looks critically at the ways in which the leaders' administrative styles and behaviors lend support to feminist claims.
