Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cycle of Life According to Modern Science Until some far-distant day when, perhaps, we may establish friendly relations with the inhabitants of some other planet, and when, Since there, too, will be evil and sorrow, our altruism must widen its embrace beyond the limits of the human family till then, we can take no larger view than that of this planetary race and can demand no more from any human institution than that it be for the welfare of all mankind. One does not need to waste time in asserting that science is such an institution, for its claims to be so considered have been upheld long ago. It is already, though in its youth, a tower of strength, foursquare to many of the winds that assail humanity. It is part of its boast that science knows no bounds of race or clime. And on this matter I must needs alienate from myself the sympathy of most of my readers - thus, perhaps, serving to dissipate the natural suspicion that I am about to advocate the claims of science because it is to my interest that these Should be recognised. Science, as I have said, knows no bounds of race or clime; and if we divest ourselves of our very natural and. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mechanism of Life: In Relation to Modern Physical Theory IT is possible that the title of this book may be misleading to some readers, and so an explanation may, very appropriately, form the subject of this introduction. Well, then, by the mechanism of life is meant nothing more than the results of a scientific analysis of the activities of living animals. First, we must define what is meant by scientific method, and this is not at all di cult now that Einstein, Eddington, and the other relativists, have persuaded us to think about what we do when we investigate something scientifically. What we do, in that case, is to observe space-time coincidences in a four-dimensional manifold - that is really and actually our procedure, though it seems rather dreadful! It would be very inconvenient, also, to sustain oneself in this plane all the while, and so we proceed to let ourselves down to earth, so to speak. From the space coincidences that we observe (for instance, the coincidences of the top of a column of mercury in a barometer tube with certain marks on the adjoining scale) we infer space measurements, and from the coincidences of the hands of a clock with marks on the dial we infer time measurements. That simplifies the method a good deal. Then it is only the relations between series of space-time measurements that form the data of science (its differential equations), but that, again, is very trying, and so we assume that there are things in nature. These things are separated from each other, at the same instant of time, by intervals of space, while they are separated from each other, in the same space, by intervals of time. Thus we have something to lean up against and sustain ourselves in this rather di loult process of apprehending nature. The things that we regard as existing apart from each other in space and time are electrons. But just yet that is rather inconvenient, and so we regard our natural things as atoms and molecules in motion in an arbitrary three dimensional space and an arbitrary one-dimensional time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mechanism of Life Professor Leduc's Theorie Physico-chimique de la Vie et Generations Spontanees has excited a good deal of attention, and not a little opposition, on the Continent. As recently as 1907 the Academic des Sciences excluded from its Comptes Rendus the report of these experimental researches on diffusion and osmosis, because it touched too closely on the burning question of spontaneous generation. As the author points out, Lamarck's early evolutionary hypothesis was killed by opposition and neglect, and had to be reborn in England before it obtained universal acceptance as the Darwinian Theory. Not unnaturally, therefore, he turns for an appreciation of his work to the free air and wide horizon of the English-speaking countries. He has entitled his book "The Mechanism of Life," since however little we may know of the origin of life, we may yet hope to get a glimpse of the machinery, and perhaps even hear the whirr of the wheels in Nature's workshop. The subject is of entrancing interest to the biologist and the physician, quite apart from its bearing on the question of spontaneous generation. Whatever view may be entertained by the different schools of thought as to the nature and significance of life, all alike will welcome this new and important contribution to our knowledge of the mechanism by which Nature constructs the bewildering variety of her forms. Everything has a beginning and an end, but what happens in between? Each spread focuses on at least one life cycle. Meet dolphins jumping in the ocean waves, penguins travelling on the ice, and butterflies fluttering in the sky. Shoot back in time 4.5 billion years to see how planet Earth was formed and then leap into the future to see what happens when stars die. You'll take a closer look at the life cycles of environments, too. Discover how a river forms and changes over time. Find out how a tree grows and all of the other life cycles it supports within it. See the amazing sculptures the oceans make out of cliffs. Dive beneath the surface to see how coral reefs form, and what causes them to die. Follow the life cycles of weather - from water cycles to ice ages, to give you a better grasp of the climate situation we find ourselves in now. From the single-celled amoeba to how the Earth has formed, the life cycles in this book have been carefully chosen to give you an amazing overview of the universe, and how everything is inevitably linked. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and Nature of Life Whether the human mind be dealing with the problems of some branch of natural science, or constructing systems of ethics, philosophy, or religion, it is equally essential to clothe its thoughts in language derived from those things in the material world which appeal to the human senses. The extent and accuracy of our knowledge of external phenomena increase all the time, and it is this increase of knowledge which makes all science progressive. True religion apart from dogma is the sublimed essence of the knowledge of the highest things in the world, and in itself is never opposed to natural science; but when there is error in men's conceptions of religion or of natural science, then there may for a time appear to be a conflict. The criticism concerned both sections Of the work - that dealing with Heterogenesis, as well as the portion in which I endeavoured to establish the reality Of Archebiosis, though there was controversy only in regard to the latter subject. The absence Of controversy about Heterogenesis was due to the fact that I made no reply whatever to any Of the criticisms concerning this section Of my book. It was a kind Of subject which did not seem open to profitable discussion, especially with persons who declined to attempt to repeat the observations in question.
