Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguably the most brutal crime committed by the Japanese military during the Asia-Pacific war was the forced mobilization of 50,000 to 200,000 Asian women to military brothels to sexually serve Japanese soldiers. The majority of these women died, unable to survive the ordeal. Those survivors who came back home kept silent about their brutal experiences for about fifty years. In the late 1980s, the women’s movement in South Korea helped start the redress movement for the victims, encouraging many survivors to come forward to tell what happened to them. With these testimonies, the redress movement gained strong support from the UN, the United States, and other Western countries. Korean “Comfort Women” synthesizes the previous major findings about Japanese military sexual slavery and legal recommendations, and provides new findings about the issues “comfort women” faced for an English-language audience. It also examines the transnational redress movement, revealing that the Japanese government has tried to conceal the crime of sexual slavery and to resolve the women’s human rights issue with diplomacy and economic power.

Book Synopsis Profiles of Anabaptist Women by : C. Arnold Snyder
Download or read book Profiles of Anabaptist Women written by C. Arnold Snyder and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2010-10-30 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the upheavals of the Reformation, one of the most significant of the radical Protestant movements emerged — that of the Anabaptist movement. Profiles of Anabaptist Women provides lively, well-researched profiles of the courageous women who chose to risk prosecution and martyrdom to pursue this unsanctioned religion — a religion that, unlike the established religions of the day, initially offered them opportunity and encouragement to proselytize. Derived from sixteenth-century government records and court testimonies, hymns, songs and poems, these profiles provide a panorama of life and faith experiences of women from Switzerland, Germany, Holland and Austria. These personal stories of courage, faith, commitment and resourcefulness interweave women’s lives into the greater milieu, relating them to the dominant male context and the socio-political background of the Reformation. Taken together, these sketches will give readers an appreciation for the central role played by Anabaptist women in the emergence and persistence of this radical branch of Protestantism.
Download or read book Faraday's Eyes written by Brian Bodman and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-12-28 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tyler is commercially legitimate and free of his gambling debts, although outrageous good luck and risky legerdemain played a major part. Yet, two years on, he somehow finds himself being pursued over Aintrees Grand National fences, at night and without a horse. Someone in authority believes he is in cahoots with his ex-mate Blackie who has absconded with some very damaging information. When, back in South Wales, he eventually chances upon this highly incriminating evidence that Blackie has slyly secreted, he finds himself embroiled in a major drugs dealing concern, organised under-age sex and the blue movie business. A body turns up in the boot of his car and only quick thinking allows him to dispose of the corpse before a couple of very suspect policemen come knocking his door. All he can do is use his considerable guile and street-wise talents to give the impression of complete innocence while frantically covering the tracks he has made wriggling out of any perceived association. He has a kidnap and recue bid to deal with, another body to confuse the opposition and some improbably choreographed mayhem on the golf course before he can even begin to effect the only conclusion that will clear him of any links (no pun). Bluff and double bluff is the name of Tylers game and his success or terminal failure depends on how well he plays his hand.
