At present the Chinese are importing both gold and silver. In 1900, ao cording to Mr. F. E. Taylor's very valuable report on trade, gold was imported from Japan because many rich Chinese wished for the most portable metal in case they needed to fly to a distance through the mischances of war. Silver was imported to the amount of fifteen million and a half taels. In addition to this sum, known from the Customs' books, there was an enormous import of British, French, and Mexican dollars, brought by the foreign armies which captured Tientsin and Peking. In Manchuria and Chihli dollars are now more plentiful than sycee. The circulation of foreign dollars in the north of China has increased so much as to help the people, in a consider able degree, to recover the commerce which was interrupted by the war of 1900, the year of cruel massacres and severe retribution. In that book I trie to give a bird's-eye view of the whole situation of trade and economics in the country. Owing to the number of subjects that had to be dealt with, the treatment was necessarily brief. The situation in China at the moment is full of interesting possibilities. Reform is in the air, and the necessity for it is being felt more keenly than at any past time. No one interested in this country, in any manner, can escape at least the thought of some scheme, or schemes, tending towards the reformation of China's government and finances. Having given a summary of the financial and economic situation, past and present, it is but a step further to attempt to formulate plans for the future. I have, therefore, endeavoured to sketch some suggestions for reform in this, and the two succeeding volumes on Taxation in China and Industries and Agriculture in China. At the beginning, I believed that I laid my plans on too large a scale, by arranging to treat the whole subject in two volumes. The scope widened as the work progressed, and I found myself confronted with the necessity, of writing, not two volumes, but four. In the body of the book, I have given my reasons for beginning with Currency and Banking. Even on these subjects, the amount of information available to the average man has been very meagre; hence, I was obliged to go more into detail, than I should have wished, concerning the past, in order to enable my readers to grasp thoroughly my schemefor reform Especially on Banking, it has been a case of pioneer work, because no one, so far as I can trace, has ever attempted to write comprehensively on that subject. I do not give out my scheme as the ideal, or as satisfying every requirement of reform. But I believe that it is the most suitable in the present circumstances in this country. My best thanks are due to Sir Everard Fraser, for going through the mss., and for the several valuable suggestions that l have embodied in the book. Wutong was perceived not as a heroic figure or paragon but rather as an embodiment of greed and lust, a maleficent demon who preyed on the weak and vulnerable. In The Sinister Way, Richard von Glahn examines the emergence and evolution of the Wutong cult within the larger framework of the historical development of Chinese popular or vernacular religion—as opposed to institutional religions such as Buddhism or Daoism. Von Glahn’s study, spanning three millennia, gives due recognition to the morally ambivalent and demonic aspects of divine power within the common Chinese religious culture. Surveying Chinese religion from 1000 BCE to the beginning of the twentieth century, The Sinister Way views the Wutong cult as by no means an aberration. In Von Glahn’s work we see how, from earliest times, the Chinese imagined an enchanted world populated by fiendish fairies and goblins, ancient stones and trees that spring suddenly to life, ghosts of the unshriven dead, and the blood-eating spirits of the mountains and forests. From earliest times, too, we find in Chinese religious culture an abiding tension between two fundamental orientations: on one hand, belief in the power of sacrifice and exorcism to win blessings and avert calamity through direct appeal to a multitude of gods; on the other, faith in an all-encompassing moral equilibrium inhering in the cosmos.

It was an era of sailing ships, pirates, opium wars, the swashbuckling East India Company, cannibals eating missionaries, and the opening of Qing China to trade and ideas. Legge was vilified by fundamentalist missionaries who disagreed with his favourable views about Chinese culture and beliefs. He risked beheading twice while helping Chinese individuals being terrorized during the Taiping Rebellion. He became so ill from Hong Kong fevers when only 29 that he was forced to return to the UK to save his life. Recovering, he and his three talented Chinese students attracted such interest that they were invited to a private meeting with Queen Victoria. Legge thrived despite serious illnesses, lost five of his 11 children and both wives to premature deaths, survived cholera epidemics, typhoons, and massive fires. He was poisoned twice in a famous scandal, helped save a sailing ship from fire on the high seas, took in a bohemian Qing scholar on the run, foiled a bank-bombing plot, and earned enmity in the colony for providing court testimony about translation that favoured accused Chinese men rather than the colonial authorities. Legge’s resilient responses and incredible productivity reflected the passion he had developed at the age of 23 for understanding the culture of China. He retired to become a Fellow of Corpus Christi College and the first Professor of Chinese.

This book discusses the interaction of this demand and the early-nineteenth-century Latin American independence movements, changes in the world economy, the resulting disruptions in the Qing dynasty, and the transformation from the High Qing to modern China. Man-houng Lin shows how the disruption in the world’s silver supply caused by the turmoil in Latin America and subsequent changes in global markets led to the massive outflow of silver from China and the crisis of the Qing empire. During the first stage of this dynastic crisis, traditional ideas favoring plural centers of power became more popular than they ever had been. As the crisis developed, however, statist ideas came to the fore. Even though the Qing survived with the resumption of the influx of Latin American silver, its status relative to Japan in the East Asian order slipped. The statist inclination, although moderated to a degree in the modern period, is still ascendant in China today. These changes—Qing China’s near-collapse, the beginning of its eclipse by Japan in the East Asian order, and shifting notions of the proper relationship between state and market and between state and society—led to “China upside down.”
