Jon J Muth's enlightening new picture book is based on an ancient Buddhist legend, and features Stillwater the Panda from Jon's Caldecott Honor Book and New York Times Bestselling book, Zen Shorts. * "A master class of picture-book storytelling." -- Kirkus Reviews, starred review Addy has moved to a new neighborhood with her beloved kitten, Trumpet. They are best friends, and inseparable. But when Trumpet is hit by a car, Addy seeks her wise friend, Stillwater. She is sure he will know how to bring Trumpet back to life. Stillwater tells Addy she will need to find a special medicine. To do this, she must go to everyone in the neighborhood and collect a cup of sugar. But there is one condition: it can only come from the home of someone who has never been touched by loss. Addy goes from house to house. And when she returns home, Stillwater asks for her cup of sugar. But, of course, she has none. For there isn't a person who has not felt the pain of loss. How Addy comes to understand how this special medicine works makes for a reassuring story of consolation and healing. Book Synopsis The Fate of Wonder by : Kevin M. Cahill
Download or read book The Fate of Wonder written by Kevin M. Cahill and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-18 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kevin M. Cahill reclaims one of Ludwig Wittgenstein's most passionately pursued endeavors: to reawaken a sense of wonder around human life and language and its mysterious place in the world. Following the philosopher's spiritual and cultural criticism and tying it more tightly to the overall evolution of his thought, Cahill frames an original interpretation of Wittgenstein's engagement with Western metaphysics and modernity, better contextualizing the force of his work. Cahill synthesizes several approaches to Wittgenstein's life and thought. He stresses the nontheoretical aspirations of the philosopher's early and later writings, combining key elements from the so-called resolute readings of the Tractatus with the "therapeutic" readings of Philosophical Investigations. Cahill shows how continuity in Wittgenstein's cultural and spiritual concerns informed if not guided his work between these texts, and in his reading of the Tractatus, Cahill identifies surprising affinities with Martin Heidegger's Being and Time—a text rarely associated with Wittgenstein's early formulations. In his effort to recapture wonder, Wittgenstein both avoided and undermined traditional philosophy's reliance on theory. As Cahill relates the steps of this bold endeavor, he forms his own innovative, analytical methods, joining historicist and contextualist approaches to text-based, immanent readings. The result is an original, sustained examination of Wittgenstein's thought.

Book excerpt: When we were little and I needed Warren, I would rub my earlobe. And perhaps it was the alchemy of childhood, a magic that happened because I believed it could, but I swear it worked. He always came. Theirs wasn’t always the misfit family in the neighborhood. Jenna Parsons’s childhood was one of block parties and barbecues, where her mother, a former beauty queen, continued her reign and her twin brother, Warren, was viewed as just another oddball kid. But as her mother’s shopaholic habits intensified, and her brother’s behavior became viewed as more strange than quirky, Jenna sought to distance herself from them. She is devoted to her career and her four-year-old daughter, Rose. But now, in his peculiar way, Warren summons her back to 62 Royal Court. What she finds there—a house in disrepair, a neighborhood on tenterhooks over a rash of petty thefts, and evidence of past traumas her mother has kept hidden—will challenge Jenna as never before. But as she stands by her family, she also begins to find beauty in unexpected places, strength in unlikely people, and a future she couldn’t have imagined.

Download or read book A Ten-Part Book to Maximizing Your Potential written by Danny Ray Christian and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two things you should know about this book are the fact that if you have ever wanted an answer to breaking out of your poverty, low self-esteem, or addiction, you will find it here. I have drawn on my experience of spending many years dealing with these issues for solutions as to how they can be successfully conquered. I am a living testimony that where the mind and spirit leads, the body will follow, and that we can always do better than we know. Secondly, when I decided to publish this book, I made up my mind that I wasn't going to try and sell it to anyone who isn't tired of being "sick and tired" and who hasn't reached the point that they can't go on doing the same old thing, expecting different results. I know that when people get sick enough of meeting with failure and disappointment you won't have to go looking for them with a cure; they will come looking for you. I am convinced that as bad as things are for many of us that our suffering is working to drive us to God and the solutions He has enabled concerned people to develop. This book is for those who want to do something different than they have always done to get something different than they have always had. It may hurt the sale of this book, but I don't encourage you to buy it if you are not ready to do some serious work on the problem areas of your life and are tired of making excuses for your life not getting better if you are not doing anything to make it better. This book is not for your shelf; it is to be used in fixing anything broken in your life, mind, or spirit.
