Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Squadron of the United States Navy, on a Friendly Cruise Around Latin America Each man of the United States squadron was so sincerely wel comed throughout Latin America that none of. Them, so far as I know, had a chance to see anything that did not appeal to his better nature. Therefore the writer is enabled to make mention of only the things that ennoble rather than of those that degrade. The southern portion of America undoubtedly has, just like the region up north, many disturbing elements to contend with; but, you may depend upon it, that it is strictly alert thereto. It is amazing how so many discordant. Elements can be held so severely in restraint as they are in most of the Latin American common wealths. The efficient manner in which United States sailors were everywhere shielded from petty annoyances pleased the lads. That year and the next she had repairs made to her in the Mediterranean. She was repaired in March, 1808, at Norfolk. Va, and again in March, 1809, at the navy yard in New York. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Propeller: 840th Aero Squadron Those who edited and contributed herein, are supposed to be, and we trust are, soldiers, rather than literary geniuses and our efforts have been aimed more with a view to a complete and comprehensive covering of squadron activities rather than with an eye to the strictly grammatical and typographical. The contributions were prepared during the few moments after work hours, when the boys came swinging back from the aerodrome tired and weary with an arduous day's work. You may imagine that it required no little exercise of will power on the part of a would-be writer to sacrifice these few brief moments of rest to wield the pen. Perched upon the edge of his bunk, with only the uncertain light of a flickering candle and midst the chaos of fifty or, sixty swearing, arguing, singing com rades in arms, he must endeavor to woo the muse as best he may. We have a hunch that even Shakespeare himself could not have accomplished much in like circumstances. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Broad Pennant: Or a Cruise in the United States Flag Ship of the Gulf Squadron; During the Mexican Difficulties; Together With Sketches of the Mexican War; From the Commencement of Hostilities to the Capture of the City of Muxico Sir: The Navy of the United States has always been regarded by the American people with a feeling of kindness and a desire to give to it a liberal support. It is this generous confidence of the nation which secures an elevated tone to the character of the naval officer, and gives to him a spirit of daring when called on for action, which renders him equal to any emergency connected with his profession. Success, as a consequence in the course of his duty, becomes almost a matter of course. The approbation of his Government and his own individual fame constitute the controlling motives of his action; and in meeting the responsibilities of his profession, his triumph or defeat becomes the standard by which his honor or disgrace is to be measured. It has been within my own opportunity, for a few years past, to note the spirit which prevails among our naval officers. And I am sure, that whatever may be their ties of earth in their social relations (and their attachments are as ardent as are those of any other class of men), they yet would regard at any moment, an opportunity to peril their lives in the accomplishment of an achievement which should accord glory to their country and individual fame to themselves, as an acceptable occurrence, and one they would gladly welcome and anxiously court. F., January, 1918, to May, 1919; Demobilized June, 1919 Hunger and thirst were among our first thoughts. Water happened to be plentiful and soon each man had his canteen filled, but food was another propo sitiou. One fellow managed to locate a bakery where he made known that he desired a loaf of bread. In payment he threw down a good American dollar bill, but received no change. Thinking this price rather high, he said nothing, but walked out wondering if prices for all articles in France were in proportion. Since then he has received considerable education in regard to such matters. Food in any quantity was not obtainable at the sta tion, but some good American Red Cross nurses showered us with apples from over the wall on the street above, and also lightened our appetites bv allow ing us to feast our eves on some real American girls doing their bit in the war. Soon after mid-day we were loaded upon the cars with our rations of hard tack, tomatoes, corn willie, beans, and a little jam. The distribution of these articles was in charge of the mess sergeant, who endeavored to place equal quantities of each article in every car; but as a matter of fact some cars fared better on jam than did others. Nevertheless, his intentions were good, although the distribution could be criticized somewhat, also his c0n dition as to equilibrium. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Home Squadron Under Commodore Conner: In the War With Mexico, Being a Synopsis of Its Services Containing Admiral Addendum Memoir, of the Landing of Our Army at Vera Cruz in Vera Cruz in 1847 At the time when hostilities commenced between Mexico and the United States, the former had no navy on the high seas, and the latter none fitted to prosecute warfare in the enemy's waters. In consequence of this the war was without any strictly naval conflicts. But the want of proper vessels in the American navy was not generally known, and consequently dissatisfaction was felt at the presumed lack of enterprise of the squadron in the Gulf of Mexico, and a portion of the press did not hesitate to censure the same, together with the commander of that force. Subsequently, however, the government - through the medium of the report of the Secretary of the Navy - announced its total want of proper vessels, and appropriate means in general, for active operations in the Gulf. This placed the case in its true light, and the injustice of the criticism was made evident. While the truth was thus slowly unraveling itself at home, Commodore Conner, in the Gulf, was manfully bearing up against the many combined difficulties there present, and steadily performing the arduous and harassing duties assigned to him. The department, having openly acknowledged the inappropriateness of the means at his command, promised to purchase and dispatch vessels and forces fitted for the special service required, and consequently the commodore laid his plans in expectation of their arrival. Commodore Conner, as before stated, having borne the brunt of difficulties and misfortune, and yet having passed with safety through the most critical period of the war, - in regard to both military and diplomatic action, - it was to be expected that the government which had not only put this officer in such an embarrassed position, but had, moreover, requested him to remain there, when he could have retired with credit, would afford him every facility in its power to achieve the end desired by placing in his hands those proper means which he had designated and which the Navy Department was preparing. Such, I presume, was the intention of the government; but the lapse of time and subsequent circumstances caused a different result. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With the Flying Squadron: Being the War Letters of the Late Harold Rosher to His Family The letters which form this book were writ ten between August 1914. And February 1916. They are spontaneous and utterly unstudied documents, and they have been printed almost exactly as Harold wrote them. Many of them are quite ordinary; most are spiced with slang; the long ones describing his share in the great historic raids are thrillingly dramatic. But it would not be wise to set some letters above others. None should be missed. Each con tributes its due realistic share to the complete picture of an airman's life in war.
