Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cruise of the Fleur-De-Lys in the Mediterranean The cruise of which the following is an account was made in the spring and summer of 1904. To it is added an account of a portion of a similar cruise made in 1901. In the earlier cruise the yacht sailed from New York about March 15th, was joined by the party at Gibraltar a month later, and sailed thence directly to Palermo; then Malta was visited, Greece, the AEgean islands, the Gulf of Corinth, and the Adriatic. On the return the west coast of Italy was skirted as far as Leghorn, and we sailed for home from Gibraltar July 20th, taking the long southerly route by Madeira, and reaching home August 17th. On the second cruise the yacht sailed from New York early in April, was joined at Gibraltar May 5th, and then cruised along the north coast of Africa, nearly all the coast of Sicily, and the Dalmatian coast to Venice. Returning, we visited Naples, Elba, and Nice, and sailed from Gibraltar for home August 4th, by way of the Azores, arriving September 3 d.If the west coast of Italy and Nice had been omitted, it would probably not have been difficult to include Greece and the AEgean in the latter trip in the same time, or at least at the cost of not more than a fortnight. As such a variation might appeal to some, that portion of the first trip has been included in this account of the second. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Summer Cruise in the Mediterranean: On Board an American Frigate Or one of the most delicious episodes in a long period of foreign travel, this volume is the imperfect and hastily written transcript. Even at the time it was written, the author felt its experience to be a dream - so exempt was it from the interrupting and qualifying drawbacks of happiness in common and working life - but, now, after an interval of many years, it seems indeed like a dream, and one so full of unmingled pleasure, that its telling almost wants the contrast of a sadness. Of the noble ship, whose summer cruise is described, and her kind and hospitable officers, the recollec tion is as fresh and grateful now, as when, (twenty years ago, ) the author bade them farewell in the port of Smyrna. Of the scenes he passed through, while their guest, he has a less perfect remembrance - relying indeed on these chance memoranda, for much that would else be forgotten. It is with a mingled sense of the real and the unreal, therefore, that the book is offered, in a new shape, to the Public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Cruise on the Mediterranean: Or Glimpses of the Old World Through the Eyes of a Business Man of the New To My Friend, Greeting: At the suggestion and earnest request of some of my friends, I have consented to the publication, in book form, of the letters that I wrote while on our Oriental trip. Through the kindness of my friend, Eugene J. Hall, these letters were published in the "Grocers' Criterion" during last winter and spring. My motive for writing these letters was that my family and intimate friends might, in a measure, enjoy some of the pleasures and benefits of a trip of great historic interest. To my son, Phelps, I am indebted for some of the results of his camera; to my good wife, for her encouragement and approval; to Poole Brothers, printers, for superior work in illustrations; to Eugene J. Hall for looking after the details and business features of the publication. As to my time and the expense of publication, my reward will be ample, should my friends accept this token of friendship and find in its perusal the pleasure that I could wish for. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a James Beard award winner, “part memoir, part cookbook . . . fresh takes on traditional French cuisine, with small anecdotes that introduce each dish.”(Booklist) Souvenirs is a memoir cookbook written by the multitalented Hubert Keller: celebrity chef, restaurateur, and Frenchman. Through personal stories and 120 recipes, the book explores his classical training and traces his development as a creative superstar chef. Keller apprentices in a Michelin three star–rated restaurant at the age of sixteen. He moves from his native Alsace, to southern France, and is inspired by the cuisine of the sun while working with the great French chefs of his time, Roger Vergé, Paul Bocuse, and Gaston Lenôtre. He learns to adapt to challenging new environments in South America, and the United States, and charts his own path into the newest frontiers of the restaurant business. The book is organized by seminal themes in Keller’s life, starting with his family in France, and ending back there again in the ”Holiday” chapter. The myriad recipes, which have been adapted for the home cook, are intertwined with 125 photographs by award-winning photographer Eric Wolfinger; images of family and friends, food and cuisine, and the places and landscapes of France, Las Vegas, and San Francisco, which all make up chef Keller’s life.
