Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book Synopsis The Triumph of the Cross by : Richard Viladesau
Download or read book The Triumph of the Cross written by Richard Viladesau and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-04-22 with total page 1165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a sequel to Richard Viladesau's well-received study, The Beauty of the Cross: The Passion of Christ in Theology and the Arts from the Catacombs to the Eve of the Renaissance. It continues his project of presenting theological history by using art as both an independent religious or theological "text" and as a means of understanding the cultural context for academic theology. Viladesau argues that art and symbolism function as alternative strands of theological expression sometimes parallel to, sometimes interwoven with, and sometimes in tension with formal theological reflection on the meaning of crucifixion and its role in salvation history. This book examines the two great revolutionary movements that gave birth to the modern West: the Renaissance and the Protestant Reformation. This period was eventful for both theology and art, and thus particularly fruitful for Viladesau's project. Using individual works of art, over sixty of which are reproduced in this book, to epitomize particular artistic and theological models, he explores the contours of each paradigm through the works of representative theologians as well as liturgical, poetic, artistic, and musical sources. To name a few examples, the theologies of Savonarola, Luther, Calvin, and the Council of Trent, are examined in correlation to the new situation of art in the era of Fra Angelico, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Dürer, Cranach, and the Mannerists. In this book, Viladesau continues to deepen our understanding of the foremost symbol of Christianity.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cross of Christ I may in this work have erred in many things; for to err is the lot of frail humanity; and no merely human production ever was, or ever will be, faultless. But I can say, with confidence, that I have not erred in any thing essential. And wherefore am I thus confident? Because I believe the word of the Lord Jesus: If any man will do the will of God he shall know of the doc trine whether it be from God (john vii. Download or read book The Problem of the Cross (Classic Reprint) written by Vernon Faithful Storr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of the Cross Atonement in the scheme of Christian theology. I have tried in these lectures to indicate the form which I think our interpretation of the Cross will take. We shall make central the thought that God suffers with His universe. One of the most urgent needs for theology at this moment is to think out the relation between the twin concep tions of Transcendence and Immanence. The Cross of Christ. Certainly Wins a new significance when set against the background of the divine immanence. But the Cross was no defeat, but a triumph. That is the cardinal message of Christianity. Hence the conception of a God who suffers with His world must be shown to be compatible with the conception of a God who in suffering is transcendently Victorious other wise the Cross spells weakness instead of power. This book will never die and to the struggling, studious, consecrated preacher, who wrote it, and The Stratford Company, who have made its circulation possible, a waiting world and a bewildered people, should give their most liberal patronage and extend a hearty, sin cere vote of thanks. This book, that, like many others that purport to discuss similar themes, 'is not dry or prolix in any sense of the word. It expresses the truest and highest form of divine romance, stirs the imagination, enkindles hope and challenges the soul to rise up in the majesty of its divine right, to receive the robe of righteousness and be crowned with the hope of immortality. In turning this tool of torture into his followers' proudest boast, Jesus produced the most dramatic reversal the world has ever experienced. Worn around our necks, hung in our homes, carried in procession and set on mountaintops, the cross speaks to what we believe about Jesus and about how we understand our lives in relationship to him. This study plumbs the depths of Scripture for the horrible and glorious significance of the world's most beloved symbol. Ideal for Lent and Easter seasons.
Download or read book The Cross written by Robin M. Jensen and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-17 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cross stirs intense feelings among Christians as well as non-Christians. Robin Jensen takes readers on an intellectual and spiritual journey through the two-thousand-year evolution of the cross as an idea and an artifact, illuminating the controversies—along with the forms of devotion—this central symbol of Christianity inspires. Jesus’s death on the cross posed a dilemma for Saint Paul and the early Church fathers. Crucifixion was a humiliating form of execution reserved for slaves and criminals. How could their messiah and savior have been subjected to such an ignominious death? Wrestling with this paradox, they reimagined the cross as a triumphant expression of Christ’s sacrificial love and miraculous resurrection. Over time, the symbol’s transformation raised myriad doctrinal questions, particularly about the crucifix—the cross with the figure of Christ—and whether it should emphasize Jesus’s suffering or his glorification. How should Jesus’s body be depicted: alive or dead, naked or dressed? Should it be shown at all? Jensen’s wide-ranging study focuses on the cross in painting and literature, the quest for the “true cross” in Jerusalem, and the symbol’s role in conflicts from the Crusades to wars of colonial conquest. The Cross also reveals how Jews and Muslims viewed the most sacred of all Christian emblems and explains its role in public life in the West today.
