Book excerpt: "The term 'Settlement'...means nothing else than the settlement of the balance of land according to the will of the strongest; for force, not reason, is the source of law" "The Cromwellian Settlement is...the history of the dealings of the Commonwealth of England with the lands and habitations of the people of Ireland after their conquest of the country in the year 1652. As their object was rather to extinguish a nation than to suppress a religion, they seized the lands of the Irish, and transferred them (and with them all the power of the state) to an overwhelming flood of new English settlers, filled with the intensest national and religious hatred of the Irish." Chapter One begins with a history of the plantation of Ireland, from the first invasion of the English, under Henry II, to the Cromwellian Settlement. Chapter Two details the Irish Rebellion of October 23, 1641. Chapter Three explains the scheme for a last and permanent conquest of Ireland through a society of adventurers. Chapter Four discusses the transplantation of the Irish nation and the officers and soldiers involved. Chapter Five outlines the problems of the adventurers; Chapter Six discusses the re-inhabiting of Ireland while Chapter Seven shows the resulting desolation. Also included are an appendix and both a subject and a name index.

Book excerpt: Cromwell's ruthless colonisation of Ireland is a story of cruelty and terror which still reverberates after more than three hundred years. Peter Berresford Ellis's acclaimed account of the period chillingly recreates 'the curse of Cromwell' the executions and mass transportations, the confiscation of lands and the banishment of Irish landowners 'to Hell or Connaught'. -- Publisher description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legacy of Oliver Cromwell is still haunts the Irish imagination. His alleged directive to the Catholic Irish to get ""to Hell or Connaught,"" and the policy that drove it, permanently altered the ownership of Irish soil. The Parliamentary forces' civil war against Charles I were enmeshed in a ruthless campaign against popery and the Catholic perpetrators of the assault on the Protestant colonists of 1641. The legacy of sectarianism has marred Irish politics to this day. Prendergast's research reveals his keen eye for evidence. His dismissal of the colonists' claims about the nature of the uprising of 1641 and his attitudes to race are contested, but he was a man of his times. More significantly his prejudices did not blind him and he lets his sources speak for themselves, while his analytical mind identifies the underlying economic motivation and forces behind the apparently civilising religious mission driving the settlement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Restoration land settlement in Ireland was one of the most significant events in the remarkable revolution in land ownership in the early modern period whereby the ownership of most of the land was transferred from Catholic to Protestant hands, and with it political and economic power. The settlement was regulated by two acts of parliament, the one familiarly known as the Act of Settlement (1662), the other the Act of Explanation (1665), both of which became the principal legal instruments upon which land tenure in Ireland was to rest for nearly two centuries. Yet the settlement has hitherto attracted the attention of relatively few historians, with the result that the subject has remained largely a blind-spot to many historians dealing with seventeenth-century Ireland. In this study Dr L. J. Arnold has attempted to resolve the uncertainties surrounding the settlement, using County Dublin as a case study.

Book excerpt: The author analyses and describes the manner in which the Newgarden Meeting evolved from circa 1650 to 1730, exploring a wide range of topics including the growth in membership, Meeting discipline, governance, socio-economic status, tithe assessment, record keeping, religious life, education and migration. A number of new approaches to the analysis of Quaker records are used to assess participation of members in Meeting governance and readers are introduced to a "Reconstitution Model" that incorporates and integrates all manner of Quaker records enabling researchers to estimate Meeting membership at any point in time as well as to explore many other aspects of Quaker life with reasonable confidence. The author demonstrates that the Meeting was essentially governed by the wealthiest Members and he offers a number of select biographies of the wealthy and Members of lesser socio-economic status for comparison.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in Ireland only in 1883, this book is a fascinating account of the Irish campaign of 1649-1650 led by Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658), the English military and political leader and later Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland, as told by the Irish Rev. Denis Murphy of the Society of Jesus. “The object of this work is to give an account in full detail, as far as is possible, of Cromwell’s Irish campaign, which began in August, 1649, and ended in May, 1650. It is a portion of history but little known. It lies for the most part in a few books, some of them difficult of access by reason of their scarcity, others written in a language not intelligible to the greater number of readers. Traditions, indeed, there are still surviving of the doings of Cromwell and his followers, many of them having, no doubt, a foundation of truth; but many, too, exaggerations at best, and not a few wholly unfounded and false. In truth, there is hardly a ruined church throughout the length and breadth of the land, the destruction of which is not attributed to Cromwell, or a crumbling castle of which it is not said that “‘Oliver Cromwell He did it pommel, And made a breach In its battlement.’ “Evil deeds are attributed to him as done where he never set foot, and names are given to places that would seem at first sight to record his presence there, but in reality have had their origin in the wish of his followers to perpetuate their leader’s fame, or in the hatred of those among whom they dwelt, who would hand down the record of his cruelties by an appellation which in their minds summed up all manner of evil.”

Book excerpt: Osprey's study of Oliver Cromwell's campaigns during the end of the English Civil War (1642-1651). Following the execution of King Charles I in January 1649, the English Parliament saw their opportunity to launch an assault on the Royalist enclave in Ireland. Oliver Cromwell was appointed as Deputy of Ireland to lead a campaign to restore direct control and quell the Confederate opposition. The first battle in Cromwell's bloody offensive was at Drogheda, where an assault on the city walls resulted in the slaughter of almost 4000 defenders and inhabitants. The Parliamentary troops then proceeded to Wexford where battle once again lead to a massacre. After Cromwell returned to England, his son-in-law, Henry Ireton, continued the operation which ended with the surrender of Galway in 1652 and led to the Act for the Settlement of Ireland, in which Irish Royalists and Confederates were evicted and their lands 'settled' by those who had advanced funds to Parliament.
