Book excerpt: The contributors to this book, first published in 1971, analyse as International Socialists the economic and social issues of modern society. Their findings were controversial, as was the alternative they proposed – the overthrow of the British system and its replacement by a society based on workers’ control. A central theme of the book is the need for socialists to have a scientific view of the modern world – a socialist theory.

This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second book in a unique two-volume study tracing the evolution of the Labour Party’s foreign policy throughout the 20th century to the present date. This is the first comprehensive study of the history of the Labour Party’s worldview and foreign policy. It argues that Labour’s foreign policy perspective should be seen not as the development of a socialist foreign policy, but as an application of the ideas of liberal internationalism. Volume Two provides a critical analysis of Labour’s foreign policy since 1951. It examines Labour’s attempts to rethink foreign policy, focusing on intra-party debates, the problems that Labour faced when in power, and the conflicting pressures from party demands and external pressures. It examines attitudes to rearmament in the 1950s, the party’s response to the Suez crisis and the Vietnam War, the bitter divisions over nuclear disarmament and the radicalisation of foreign and defence policy in the 1980s. It also examines Labour’s desire to provide moral leadership to the rest of the world. The last two chapters focus on the Blair and Brown years, with Blair’s response to the Kosovo crisis, to 9/11 and his role in the ‘war on terror’. Whereas Blair’s approach to foreign affairs was to place emphasis on the efficacy of the use of military force, Brown’s approach instead placed faith in the use of economic measures. This highly readable book provides an excellent analysis of Labour’s foreign policy. It is essential reading for students of British politics, the Labour Party, and foreign policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The return of British socialism: Where does it comes from? Why now? And where is it going? The remarkable advance of "Corbynism" did not emerge from nowhere. It is the product of developments in socialist and working-class politics over the past forty years and more. The Thatcher era witnessed a wholesale attack on the post war consensus and welfare state, through a regime of deregulation, attacks on the unions, privatisations, and globalisation. However, at the same time, there has been a persistent resistance to the growing powers of neo-liberalism - yet this side of the story is rarely told as it was considered to be a history of defeat. Yet out of this struggle emerged a thoroughly modern socialism. This book is essential reading for those who want to know where Corbynism comes from: the policies, personalities and moments of resistance that has produced this new horizon. This includes the story of power struggles within the Labour Party, and the eventual defeat of New Labour. The movements outside it - trade unions, feminists groups, anti-fascists activists, anti-war protestors - that have driven the policies of the movement forward. And the powerful influence of international groups that have shaped the potential for a global progressive politics.

Book Synopsis Sacred Cows and Common Sense by : Tim Bale
Download or read book Sacred Cows and Common Sense written by Tim Bale and published by Tim Bale. This book was released on 1999 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using Labour's postwar welfare policy, it shows that we need to break down distinctions between the "symbolic" and the "substantial" in politics, that "cultural theory" has potential as a way of understanding party political culture, and that welfare policy has played a crucial but self-defeating role in Labour's efforts to manage itself, win hearts and minds and govern competently. It concludes by arguing that New Labour's attempts to rethink welfare is largely rhetorical if one recalls what Labour did in office rather than promised in opposition. Rather than a serious attempt to confront social realities, the rethink represents a continuation of past practice and a way of signalling the government's "soundnesss" to the market.
