Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Crime, Vol. 2 IN J'accuse I have already pointed out with all possible em phasis that of the three descriptions which may be applied to this war, namely, that it is a defensive war, a preventive war, or an imperialistic war of conquest, in my opinion, so far as Germany is concerned, the third only is in point. The other was Madame K a Russian, fair, tall, blonde, lighthearted, involved in the hidden paths of diplomacy, possessing and displaying a casket full of love letters from Count Mole, somewhat of a spy, absolutely charming and terrifying. The precautions which had been taken in case of accident were visible even from outside. Since the preceding evening there had been seen from the windows of the neighboring houses two post-chaises in the courtyard of the Elysee, horsed, ready to start, the postilions in their sad dles. In the stables of the Elysee in the Rue Montaigne there were other carriages horsed, and horses saddled and bridled. Louis Bonaparte had not slept. During the night he had given mysterious orders thence when morning came there was on this pale face a sort of appalling serenity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of a Crime, Vol. 1 of 2 Louis Bonaparte made great protestations, and every thing seemed to favour him. After such solemn assur anecs, why doubt his honour? Towards the end of October, 1848, when he became candidate for the Presi dency, he called on one living at no. 37, Rue de la Tour d'auvergne, to Whom he said: AS I have been calumniated, I now come to give you an explanation. DO you think me mad enough to venture a Napoleon's career? There are two fit models for a man Of great am bition to be found in Napoleon and Washington, one representing genius and the other virtue. TO say you will be a genius is absurd, but to state you will act as a man of honour is an honest confession. How much of this depends on our own free will? To be a genius? No. To be an upright man? Yes. To instil genius into ourselves is impossible; but to act honourably is quite possible. DO you consider me mad enough to renew the Napoleonic era by one thing only, - crime? That would be a mighty ambition certainly. The Re public is established, and as I am not a great man, I Shall not attempt to imitate Napoleon; but as I am an honourable man, I shall take Washington as a model The name of Bonaparte shall twice be inscribed in the history Of France; the first with crime and feats of glory, the second with integrity and honour. The latter will avail doubtless far more than the former. Why? Because Napoleon may have been the greater, but Wash ington is the better man; and I prefer being a good Citizen to a guilty hero. So much for my ambition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Celebrated Crimes, Vol. 2 of 3 Now, priests and soldiers, men of letters and poets, nobles and commoners, were looking forward with terror to the government falling into the hands of a stranger and a young girl, and called to mind the words of Robert himself when following to the grave the body of Charles, his only son. At the moment when he passed the threshold of the church, he turned toward the barons of the kingdom, and cried, in a voice stifled by his sobs, This day the crown is fallen from my head: woe to me! Woe to you And now that the bells were announcing the dying agonies of the good king, these prophetic words occurred to the minds of every one. Book excerpt: Since his first appearance in Beeton’s Christmas Annual in 1887, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes has been one of the most beloved fictional characters ever created. Now, in two paperback volumes, Bantam presents all fifty-six short stories and four novels featuring Conan Doyle’s classic hero--a truly complete collection of Sherlock Holmes’s adventures in crime! Volume I includes the early novel A Study in Scarlet, which introduced the eccentric genius of Sherlock Holmes to the world. This baffling murder mystery, with the cryptic word Rache written in blood, first brought Holmes together with Dr. John Watson. Next, The Sign of Four presents Holmes’s famous “seven percent solution” and the strange puzzle of Mary Morstan in the quintessential locked-room mystery. Also included are Holmes’s feats of extraordinary detection in such famous cases as the chilling “ The Adventure of the Speckled Band,” the baffling riddle of “The Musgrave Ritual,” and the ingeniously plotted “The Five Orange Pips,” tales that bring to life a Victorian England of horse-drawn cabs, fogs, and the famous lodgings at 221B Baker Street, where Sherlock Holmes earned his undisputed reputation as the greatest fictional detective of all time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection is based on the required reading list of Yale Department of Classics. Originally designed for students, this anthology is meant for everyone eager to know more about the history and literature of this period, interested in poetry, philosophy and rhetoric of Ancient Rome. Latin literature is a natural successor of Ancient Greek literature. The beginning of Classic Roman literature dates to 240 BC. From that point on, Latin literature would flourish for the next six centuries. Latin was the language of the ancient Romans, but it was also the lingua franca of Western Europe throughout the Middle Ages. Consequently, Latin Literature outlived the Roman Empire and it included European writers who followed the fall of the Empire, from religious writers like Aquinas, to secular writers like Francis Bacon, Baruch Spinoza, and Isaac Newton. This collection presents all the major Classic Roman authors, including Cicero, Virgil, Ovid and Horace whose work intrigues and fascinates readers until this day. Content: Plautus: Aulularia Amphitryon Terence: Adelphoe Ennius: Annales Catullus: Poems and Fragments Lucretius: On the Nature of Things Julius Caesar: The Civil War Sallust: History of Catiline's Conspiracy Cicero: De Oratore Brutus Horace: The Odes The Epodes The Satires The Epistles The Art of Poetry Virgil: The Aeneid The Georgics Tibullus: Elegies Propertius: Elegies Cornelius Nepos: Lives of Eminent Commanders Ovid: The Metamorphoses Augustus: Res Gestae Divi Augusti Lucius Annaeus Seneca: Moral Letters to Lucilius Lucan: On the Civil War Persius: Satires Petronius: Satyricon Martial: Epigrams Pliny the Younger: Letters Tacitus: The Annals Quintilian: Institutio Oratoria Juvenal: Satires Suetonius: The Twelve Caesars Apuleius: The Metamorphoses Ammianus Marcellinus: The Roman History Saint Augustine of Hippo: The Confessions Claudian: Against Eutropius Boethius: The Consolation of Philosophy Plutarch: The Rise and Fall of Roman Supremacy: Romulus Poplicola Camillus Marcus Cato Lucullus Fabius Crassus Coriolanus Cato the Younger Cicero

Book excerpt: "Frenzied Finance" by Thomas William Lawson is a scathing exposé of Wall Street and the financial practices that led to the Panic of 1907. Published in 1905, the book caused a sensation with its sensational revelations about corruption, manipulation, and greed in the world of high finance. Thomas William Lawson, a former stockbroker turned reformer, pulls back the curtain on the inner workings of the stock market and the machinations of powerful financiers. He exposes various fraudulent schemes, market manipulations, and insider trading tactics employed by wealthy bankers and speculators to manipulate stock prices and exploit the investing public. One of the central themes of the book is the phenomenon of "stock watering," whereby unscrupulous operators artificially inflate the value of stocks through misleading financial reports, false rumors, and other deceptive tactics. Lawson vividly describes how investors are lured into speculative frenzies, only to be left holding worthless securities when the bubble bursts. Moreover, Lawson criticizes the complicity of government officials, regulators, and even the media in perpetuating the culture of greed and corruption on Wall Street. He argues that the financial elite wield disproportionate power and influence over the economy, manipulating markets for their own enrichment at the expense of ordinary investors. "Frenzied Finance" is not merely a critique of Wall Street; it is also a call to action for reform. Lawson advocates for greater transparency, accountability, and regulation in the financial industry to prevent future crises and protect the public interest. He urges investors to educate themselves and exercise caution when navigating the treacherous waters of the stock market. Despite its sensationalist tone and controversial claims, "Frenzied Finance" had a significant impact on public opinion and helped galvanize support for financial reform in the early 20th century. While some of Lawson's assertions may have been exaggerated or sensationalized, his book remains a compelling indictment of the excesses and abuses of Wall Street during the Gilded Age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Graphic Canon, Volume 2 gives us a visual cornucopia based on the wealth of literature from the 1800s. Several artists—including Maxon Crumb and Gris Grimly—present their versions of Edgar Allan Poe’s visions. The great American novel Huckleberry Finn is adapted uncensored for the first time, as Twain wrote it. The bad boys of Romanticism—Shelley, Keats, and Byron—are visualized here, and so are the Brontë sisters. We see both of Coleridge’s most famous poems: “Kubla Khan” and “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” (the latter by British comics legend Hunt Emerson). Philosophy and science are ably represented by ink versions of Nietzsche’sThus Spake Zarathustra and Darwin’s On the Origin of Species. Frankenstein, Moby-Dick, Les Misérables, Great Expectations, Middlemarch, Anna Karenina, Crime and Punishment (a hallucinatory take on the pivotal murder scene), Thoreau’s Walden (in spare line art by John Porcellino of King-Cat Comics fame), “The Drunken Boat” by Rimbaud, Leaves of Grass by Whitman, and two of Emily Dickinson’s greatest poems are all present and accounted for. John Coulthart has created ten magnificent full-page collages that tell the story of The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. And Pride and Prejudice has never looked this splendiferous! This volume is a special treat for Lewis Carroll fans. Dame Darcy puts her unmistakable stamp on—what else?—the Alice books in a new 16-page tour-de-force, while a dozen other artists present their versions of the most famous characters and moments from Wonderland. There’s also a gorgeous silhouetted telling of “Jabberwocky,” and Mahendra’s Singh’s surrealistic take on “The Hunting of the Snark.” Curveballs in this volume include fairy tales illustrated by the untameable S. Clay Wilson, a fiery speech from freed slave Frederick Douglass (rendered in stark black and white by Seth Tobocman), a letter on reincarnation from Flaubert, the Victorian erotic classic Venus in Furs, the drug classic The Hasheesh Eater, and silk-screened illustrations for the ghastly children’s classic Der Struwwelpeter. Among many other canonical works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Crime, Vol. 3 The position is quite different with regard to the question of war-aims. Here we do not stand on firm ground, but on very uncertain ground. The war-aims are most inti mately connected, not merely with the causes of the war on which I have fully expressed my views elsewhere - but also with the success achieved in the war, that is to say, they are related to the constantly varying military situation, which in the nature of things involves a constant rise and fall in the aims of the belligerent parties. Their wishes may no doubt remain the same, but the prospects of their realisation vary. Thus the parties may find themselves compelled to moderate their wishes temporarily, or at any rate to place them in the background so long as matters are going badly from a mili tary point of view; whereas on the other hand, when things go better, they are in a position to come forward once more with their earlier wishes and perhaps even to place them still higher. Not even the most rabid annexationist can fail to repress his expansionist aims, if he is convinced from the war situation that they cannot be attained, or at any rate cannot be attained in their full extent. He will, however, once more emerge with his annexationist desires as soon as the military situation appears to permit their accomplishment.
