Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Creed Explained, or an Exposition of Catholic Doctrine The following work, which I am now giving to the public, has for its object to promote Catholic truth by explaining Catholic doctrine as contained in the "Creeds," and as it is defined and interpreted by the Church. It contains the summary and substance of lectures and instructions which for several years I have been accustomed to give to students and pupils; and in it I have endeavoured to explain the twelve Articles of the Creed, as well as the more recent definitions and declarations of the Church on matters of faith as contained in the decrees of the Vatican Council, and the constitutions of the Sovereign Pontiffs. I have not thought it necessary to make the work in any sense a controversial one, because I believe that a clear and accurate exposition of Catholic doctrine is the best means of promoting its knowledge, and the best remedy against misrepresentations, and the dishonest criticisms of our adversaries; and also the best refutation of the many false theories of Christianity against which we have to contend, in order to guard the true doctrine of Christ, and make it known to the people. In the manner of treating the subject, I first give an introductory treatise on the virtue of faith, together with the full text of all the "Creeds" that are approved by the Church, and professed by the faithful. Afterwards, I give the text of the "Apostles' Creed" and of the "Nicene Creed" at the head of each Article as the subject of the instructions and explanations which follow. In the explanation of the Articles I state the doctrine, explain its meaning, and then give the proofs of its truth, taken from the usual Theological sources - Sacred Scripture, Tradition, the definitions of the Church, the authority of Fathers and Theologians, and reason. Book excerpt: This work begins with a consideration of Faith. Let us consider this excerpt: "Anyone of us may say, "Lord, I believe; Lord, I doubt nothing." But we must also make our faith a living one by doing good and avoiding evil, as the law prescribes. Good works infuse life into faith. " As the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead" Games ii. 26). Christian life is a tree whose vital roots are planted in faith. But if the tree bear no fruit it will be cut down, for it is of no use, let it be ever so fair. Now, the blossoms and fruits on the tree of Christian life are our works. It is, therefore, a soul-destroying error to deny the necessity of good works. "By their fruits you shall know them " (Matthew vii. 20)."And let us consider this on Jesus' descent into hell: "Theologians teach that there are three distinct places in which those souls that have not reached eternal happiness are detained after death. According to the Catechism of the Council of Trent the first place is an extremely dark and awful prison, in which the souls of the damned are punished in an everlasting and unquenchable fire together with the evil spirits, called the fire of hell, the abyss, and in a stricter sense hell. Secondly, there is a purgatory, in which the souls of the good are punished for a time and purified, that they may be made worthy to enter into the presence of God, where nothing defiled can enter.A third place of waiting is the one in which the souls of the just who died before Christ awaited without any positive punishment the hour when they would be freed by the coming of their Redeemer. It was to these souls that the soul of Our Saviour went when His body was placed in the sepulcher. This place is called Limbo, and many theologians hold the opinion that it is here that the souls of unbaptized infants are now detained.Father Rolfus recommends the following practice: "The descent of Christ into Limbo should have theeffect of stimulating us to descend in spirit often, while we are yet on this earth, into hell. Not indeed into Limbo, but into hell itself, where the damned souls are burning, groaning, and writhing - into the place of torture, the abyss of misery, where God punishes mortal sin for all eternity. Such a practise will be a salutary one, and will have the effect of keeping us out of hell when we die. "By fire," says a pious teacher, u the hungry lion is frightened away from his prey; so, by keeping hell-fire before our minds, we shall be frightened away from the commission of sin." " The fire of our passions," says Tertullian, "is often extinguished by thoughts on the fire of hell." On the same subject St. Chrysostom writes, "He who, while out of hell, goes down there sometimes in thought will surely not be sent there after death." And St. Bernard warns us to "descend voluntarily into hell often during life, that after our death we may not be compelled to go there."

Book excerpt: Article IX of the Creed, which embraces all that concerns the Church and the Sovereign Pontiff, has demanded several chapters in order to deal with it fully, and to explain in detail all the points of doctrine "that affect Catholic claims, Catholic policy, and Catholic teaching and authority. There are therefore separate chapters in this Article on the Church: -The Primacy of St. Peter; the Sovereign Pontiff and his infallibility; General Councils and their authority; and a concluding chapter on the legislative authority of the Church, and her relations to civil society. It would have saved much controversy and misunderstanding at the time of the publication of Mr. Gladstone's Expostulation on the Vatican Decrees, had the doctrine of the Church been better known and understood by the English public on the question of Catholic allegiance, Catholic policy, and Catholic teaching, which the Expostulation attacked with such vehemence and severity. Men who were then disturbed by the controversy may now, with calm and dispassionate reason, read and understand the sense in which all these questions are held and taught in the Catholic Church, without any fear of their believing that" the Church of Rome is arrogant in her claims, dishonest in her policy, shallow and ignorant in her teaching." From this outline of the work, it will appear that it covers a large field of study, common to ecclesiastical students, to teachers in schools, colleges and convents, to whom I hope it may be specially useful in their religious studies and examinations; and many a hard worked priest may find it a convenient hand-book for the subject matter of his pastoral sermons and instructions. On the part of the Catholic laity, there is always to be found amongst them an earnest and laudable desire to read and to study doctrinal works, as they deem it necessary, in the midst of their Protestant friends and relations, to be well instructed in their Creed, in order to be able to assign a reason for the faith that is in them, and to instruct others in the Christian doctrine when required. And it seems that amongst the people of this Country in general there is a sincere and ever increasing spirit of research and inquiry into religious truth and doctrine, as is evident from the publication and large circulation of numerous works, even of fiction, all tending in this direction, as for example " Robert Elsemere," and others of a like class. For these reasons I am led to hope that the work, which I now publish, may find a place in the religious and doctrinal literature of the day. It is intended as a help to Catholic students and teachers; as a safe and secure guide to the laity in matters of Catholic belief; and as a convenient hand-book for priests, on the mission, for the preparation of their sermons and instructions. And all non-Catholics may learn from it a correct knowledge of the Christian doctrine as held and taught in the Catholic Church. To these individually we must give the full benefit of the excuse derived from invincible ignorance with regard to the truths of faith which they do not know, or which they are prevented from knowing through no fault of theirs. At the same time, we must remember the words of the prophet Isaias, which St. Jerome applies to the Catholic Church: -And in the last days the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be prepared on the top of mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills, and all nations shall flow into it.
