Book excerpt: Huidobro published this collection of manifestos and statements on poetics in 1925, and it summed up the previous 8 or 9 years of his work. The truth is, however, that he was already moving away from some of the positions espoused in this volume, and it was one of his last original publications in French.

Latinx Studies. Inspired by the legend of Tristan and Isolde, Vicente Huidobro's SKY-QUAKE: TREMOR OF HEAVEN is a stunning prose poem driven by a relentless seismic energy that takes metaphor-making and image-building to unimaginable heights. Originally published in Madrid in 1931 under the title Temblor de cielo and in Paris in 1932 as Tremblement de ciel, this groundbreaking text stands as one of the most significant bilingual poems of twentieth-century letters. Part love poem, part surrealist narrative, and part philosophical treatise, SKY-QUAKE: TREMOR OF HEAVEN is intimately connected to Huidobro's better-known masterwork Altazor (1931) and stands as a major achievement in Latin American avant-garde poetry, again proving Huidobro's stature among the four giants of Chilean poetry, where he stands shoulder to shoulder with Nobel laureates Gabriela Mistral and Pablo Neruda, as well as his contemporary avant-gardist Pablo de Rokha. Released here for the first time in a trilingual edition with a translation that takes into account both the Spanish and French originals in its Englishing, SKY-QUAKE: TREMOR OF HEAVEN allows translators Ignacio Infante and Michael Leong to bring Huidobro's dynamic and wildly inventive poetic flights to new readers with verve and savvy. Not for the faint of heart and not to be missed! "Mystical, cosmic, exuberant, boisterous, otherworldly, operatic, epic, outlandish. These are just some of the adjectives that apply to this multilingual masterwork of one of the most important poets of the twentieth century. The Gods and wars and ghosts inside Huidobro's language explode off the page, creating an affective experience that is vertiginous, that makes the body and mind quake along with the sky, the word, the image. Huidobro is a singular writer, a legend of the global avant-garde. This sumptuous new translation is a tremendous service to contemporary poetry and to literary history."--Daniel Borzutzky "Vicente Huidobro, the 'citizen of oblivion:' he contemplates from such heights that everything turns to air. He is everywhere and nowhere: he is the invisible oxygen of our poetry."--Octavio Paz

Book excerpt: This volume includes the 4 chapbooks published in 1917-18 and presents, at first glance, an odd mixture. Chronologically, we have El espejo de agua, written in 1914-16, first published in 1916, but, to all intents and purposes not distributed until 1918. Horizon carré(see below) follows and then come Ecuatorial (written in Spanish), Poemas árticos, Hallali and Tour Eiffel, the last two being composed in French. The last two publications from this period, Hallali and Tour Eiffel-both marked by textual experimentation-were very important for the rising wave of the Spanish avant-garde. In this second edition, we have added an appendix containing the French version of the title poem, Équatoriale, which is at least partly translated by the author, an early version of Tour Eiffel as published in the magazine Nord-Sud, together with a Spanish version of the finished poem.

Latinx Studies. Translated by Tony Frazer. The prose-poem TEMBLOR DE CIELO is more apparently unified work than its contemporary work, Altazor, although this might owe more to its style of delivery: an ecstatic outpouring of words that largely revolve around the themes of love, sex and death. The Isolde to whom much of the poem is addressed is an idealised feminine figure--part goddess, part idealised beloved, part Isolde from Wagner's opera (another ecstatic outpouring on the theme of love, sex and death) and part Ximena Amunátegui, the young woman who had become the poet's second wife. The poem is also a sustained lyric effusion of a kind that Huidobro had never produced before, and it marks the point at which his work moves on from the barnstorming avant-garderie of his younger years to a more mature style, albeit one influenced by surrealism, a movement which Huidobro had previously attacked. It is also the last time that Huidobro was to adopt the god-like narrative persona that occurs in his earlier work. In TEMBLOR, as in some earlier works, God is conflated with the poet-creator, as he is in Altazor, where the opening lines reflect the opening of a love-poem addressed to Ximena that the author published (to great scandal) in the Santiago newspaper, La Nación.

Book excerpt: Chilean poet Vicente Huidobro's el creacionismo ("Creationism")-conceived circa 1912-holds that a new object of the imagination is universally translatable because its substance is free of all laws that would otherwise govern its meaning. Transnational, multilingual, extradisciplinary-el creacionismo fomented a body of work that remains essential to understanding the poet's visionary, disruptive role in a world increasingly destabilized by the insularity of human technique. El Creacionismo collects Jonathan Simkins widely published and acclaimed English translations alongside Huidobro's original Spanish texts in a new bilingual edition, with a foreword by Leo Lobos.
