Download or read book Crater's Edge written by Michal Giedroyc and published by Bene Factum Publishing. This book was released on 2010-05-01 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 1939, as a 10 year-old boy, Michal Giedroyc watched the Russian security police seize his home in Eastern Poland. His father, a senator and judge, was imprisoned while his mother, with Michal and his two sisters, were left on the streets of the local town to fend for themselves. Later they were transported in cattle trucks to the wastes of Soviet Siberia, with hundreds of thousands of other deportees. "Here, by the will of the rulers of the Soviet Empire, we were to toil and die." Eighteen months of deprivation and hunger on a collective farm brought them to the brink of extinction. Exhausted, half starved, and ill, Michal's mother and her children set off on a second grueling journey that would take them across Central Asia to Persia, the Middle East, and finally England. In one dramatic incident their survival hinged remarkably on the just two simple objects—a potato and a penknife.

Book excerpt: A huge sink hole forms in the Ocala National Forest, one that is so deep and more than a mile down; briefly opens a doorway of a pre-historic world, to our world, allowing the worlds most ferocious predator to escape into our world. Paleontologist James King, who is sent to the crater, finds a discovery that will change the world of paleontology forever as the death toll mounts as attacks take place first from the Croaker Hole, then Sunset Landing to Willow Cove all on the St. Johns River. Along with Dr. King, Dr. Saddler joins the team, bringing the sensitive GSAN data and technology which in turn is being sought by a secret military government research facility from deep inside a Georgia mountain. Mr. Robards, an eccentric fossil collector, offers an outrageous reward for the capture of the prehistoric predator which is blatantly monopolized by the press and a greedy general who will stop at nothing to collect the reward.Major Holt, (an aid and second in command with General Rhodes of the government research facility referred to as the W.A.R.), assists the group with a special weapon stemming from Dr. Saddlers GSAN technology whom he tries to track down and attempt to capture or kill the vicious predator.Everyone in the group understands that no place and no one are safe as long as the creature is stalking the rivers surrounding this tiny secluded community called Welaka.

Forced to survive on an unfamiliar planet against an unknown alien enemy, Rykus and his family must adapt and overcome a myriad of obstacles. Against overwhelming odds in a world they are unfamiliar with, they are compelled to interact with some of the most frightening and amazing creatures never before seen in human history. The sinister Nogzakhs of the Dominion would stop at nothing to recapture this elusive human fugitive and conquer a Kingdom that was in desperate need of a hero. Rykus transformed his human self to become Adon , the King of Cavanon. Charged with the restoration of the species, Adon would struggle to defend this ancient kingdom against the merciless Federoth and his alien forces. However, with great power comes great responsibility, and the King would learn, painfully, that Good cannot exist without Evil.

Book excerpt: WWII had gone into its fourth year. For Germany, the war is looking ever bleaker and this on many war fronts. Of course the one in the east is no exception. The German army is being pushed back continuously. Often enough, military formations are passed over by the foes and get surrounded. This is the story of just such a unit, which suddenly finds itself being cut off by the Russians and end up miles behind enemy lines. The sudden and vehement onset of the east’s famous hard winters makes things worse for the men of the Fifth Company. They must not only fight a relentless enemy, but harsh weather conditions to boot. Will they make it back to the own lines, which are also moving back? And if they do, who will be left behind, dead and frozen stiff far, far away from home?

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Fifth International Confer ence on Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS V), held at the Capitol Holiday Inn, Washington, DC, USA, from September 30 to October 4, 1985. The conference was the fifth in a series of conferences held bienni ally. Previous conferences were held in Miinster (1977), Stanford (1979), Budapest (1981), and Osaka (1983). SIMS V was organized by Dr. R.J. Colton of the Nayal Research Lab oratory and Dr. D.S. Simons of the National Bureau of Standards un der the auspices of the International Organizing Committee chaired by Prof. A. Benninghoven of the Universitat Miinster. Dr. Richard F.K. Herzog served as the honorary chairman of SIMS V. While Dr. Herzog is best known to the mass spectrometry community for his theoretical development of a mass spectrometer design, known as the Mattauch-Herzog geometry, he also made several early and impor tant contributions to SIMS. In 1949, Herzog and Viehbock published a description of the first instrument designed to study secondary ions pro duced by bombardment from a beam of ions generated in a source that was separated from the sample by a narrow tube. Later at the GCA Cor poration, he brought together a team of researchers including H.J. Liebl, F.G. Riidenauer, W.P. Poschenrieder and F.G. Satkiewicz, who designed and built, and carried out applied research with the first commercial ion microprobe.
