She was not asked to go into his room during the morning, but in the course of the afternoon her aunt said to her--'Should you like to come and sit with Davie while I write my letters, Effie? I shall be glad if you will come for a little while, for then I can take my writing into the dressing-room, and he won't feel dull if he has you to talk to.' Upon this Effie got up a little more promptly than she had done the day before, and was soon perched on a chair by Davie's fireside, while Mrs. Leighton placed herself in the dressing-room so that by turning her head she could see, though she could not hear, most of what went on. Effie sat without opening her lips until Mrs. Leighton was safely settled in the adjoining room; then, fixing her eyes on Davie, she opened the conversation. 'Well?' said Effie. As he had no other remark prepared, and probably thought this a good one, Davie said 'Well 1' too; and then there was a little silence, and Effie nodded her head. 'I said I would come, you know, ' was Effie's next remark. 'Yes, I know you did, ' replied Davie. 'And I've got a story all ready, ' said Effie. 'Oh, have you? I'm so glad ' cried Davie. 'It's quite a new one too; I never told it to anybody. But I think I'll get upon the bed before I begin, because that will bring me nearer to you, ' said Effie. 'Oh very well, ' answered Davie.
