Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unending Genesis, or Creation Ever Present But of course we do not expect perfection in it. The magnitude Of the world being still unknown, the story innocently made creation brief, - the work of a few days. Naturally, too, the legend was influenced by that more ancient institution, the Sabbath, and the work made to fill just a week. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and the Need of Atonement As the title indicates, the main object of this book is not to offer a new theory of the Atonement. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Creation I offer great latitude here to the speculations of modern science. This will not strike all my readers favorably; but time, I think, will justify the course I have taken. I have lived to see the nebular hypothesis propounded, disputed, and at last quite generally. Accepted. The development hypothesis seems passing the same ordeal. It has not yet, by any means, been established, -but it is every year gaining ground with sc1entific men; and the question is already upon us, whether, in case that hypothesis were established, we could maintain our faith in the Bible. Some scientific men say no some zeal ously religions men say no. Others, equally wise and equally good, say yes: the Mosaic cosmogony and the development hypothesis may be so interpreted as to stand in perfect har mony. In this work I take my stand with the latter class, and make my appeal to all honest inquirers and earnest workers, whether in the field of biblical interpretation or in that of scien tific research. Whether we read from the rock-record or from the inspired Word, the story of creation is essentially the same. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Creation It is true that infidels have Often brought forward some branch Of Science in confutation Of Scripture, but it is also a fact that in nearly every such case, the very arguments that have been used by these men, have at last become the strongest arguments on the other side. Geo logy was at first adduced as a proof that the world had existed from all eternity, instead Of having been created by an Omnipotent God, and the question had often been asked, Can you produce one proof of the creation Of any thing? N ow this was a difficult question to answer, until Geology made manifest the fact that Man was created, by producing a clear and unimpeachable proof that up to a certain time, he did not exist on the earth, and that at a period Of time, a little later, he did exist; the space between these epochs is not known, but it has nothing to do with the argument, for within that period (whatever it may have been) Man was created, and created as perfect in is physical organisation as he is at present - no long series Of developments from the higher animals by for tuitous circumstances, as some pretend - no gradual addition Of parts to suit the'physical changes of the earth's sur face. There is undoubted proof from the Oldest records, in the form Of Sculptures, that Man's appearance has always been the same, and the records Of the Bible (the antiquity Of which, at all events, cannot be disputed) show that the constitution of his mind was at that time just as it is now - every passion, every desire the same - the only advance he has made, is in the knowledge Of God's works; the application Of that knowledge to his own benefit, and the glorification of his Maker. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office HE object which led to the enterprise of this subject was essentially practical. Considerable outcry had been raised against the interpolation into the service by the Celebrant of parts of the Unreformed Office. The outcry interpreted this action as throwing doubt or discredit on the Office of our Church. And this interpretation is justified by the open avowals of many who are addicted to this practice. They allege defect or deficiency in our Office. Others, indeed, without such allegation or conscious admission, defend their interpolations as conducing to greater fulness or richness. The object of this work in part'is to attempt to disprove the charges of insufficiency and to show the redundancy of such interpolations. The nature of the interpolations in View has been already defined. There is no reference to any private1 intercessions or devo tions of the Celebrant, but to the direct interpolation of portions of other Offices. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Course, Vol. 1: Outline and Notes; Creation to the Kingdom We are next confronted with a question of very great practical importance, viz.: How should the Bible be taught This book is the author's answer. It may be helpful, however, to mention and briefly explain the princi ples upon which the book is written. First, That the Bible itself should be the chief text-book; other books being used only as guides and helps in the study of the Word. Second, That the Bible should be studied systematically, according to a plant The plan adopted in this book is to divide the Bible into periods indicated by the epochs in the history of the Kingdom of God considered as an organized, visible body. Hence the great central point in the plan is the organization of the visible church in the family of Abraham. All which precedes this central point is in the way of preparation for the organization of the visible church, and all that follows is the unfolding and fulfillment of the Abrahamic Covenant, the great charter of the church. To mark and emphasize this great central point in Biblical, history the first period is called Ante - Ecclesi astical - i. E., before the organization of the Visible church, and the second period post-ecclesiastical - i. E., after the o? Ganization of the visible church. The names of the other periods are descriptive. Third, That the Bible should be taught historically, bringing out in order the great facts in the progres and development of the true religion in the world. Fourth, That the Bible should be taught exeget ically, applying true methods and sound laws of interpre tation to the Bible with aview to ascertaining its meaning. It is not the purpose of this book to deal with the ques tions presented by the higher criticism but to enable the students in our institutions of learning and in Bible classes to obtain a clear knowledge of the contents of the Bible and something of its blessed meaning.
