However, there is increasing evidence that suggests that the atmosphere and ocean data assimilation systems should be combined. To fully account for these observed interactions as well as to anticipate the discovery of a host of other ways in which the ocean and atmosphere modify each other, NRL has undertaken the development of the Couple Ocean/Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS). The goal of this modeling project is to gain predictive skill in simulating the ocean and atmosphere at high resolution on time-scales of hours to several days. Significant questions exist as to how tightly coupled the atmosphere and ocean data assimilation systems must be, and over what types of atmospheric and ocean conditions this coupling is important. The purpose of this paper is to provided a description of the status of COAMPS and present recent results.

Processes within the earth's two primary physical systems, the ocean and atmosphere, directly impact Naval operations on the mesoscale and the local PBL scale. Consequently, accurate and efficient prediction on these scales is a necessity. Scientists now consider the ocean and atmosphere as separate but fully coupled, two-way interactive fluids. Predicting the behavior of either fluid depends upon the spatial and temporal forcing applied by the other. Thus, a single numerical prediction system combining an oceanic and an atmospheric model provides more realistic representation of these two geophysical systems. Additionally in the past decade, increased computer power and technological advancements have improved computational efficiency allowing larger models, with higher resolution, multi-nested grids and complicated physics, to be developed and run for real-time forecasting purposes. When used in a research mode, the models also provide valuable insight toward understanding complex mesoscale interactions. To fully utilize modern computer resources and to meet the growing need for high resolution, coupled oceanic/atmospheric forecasts, a new model has been developed by the Naval Research Laboratory: The Coupled Ocean/Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS).

Book excerpt: The U.S Navy has a strong interest in conducting atmospheric research in support of operational mesoscale forecasts used to derive atmospheric conditions deemed of strategic interest within the littoral. This effort will require relatively fine horizontal resolution (generally less than 10 km) to accurately represent the complex flow and thermodynamic conditions which typically reside near the coastal regions of the globe. The task is made even more difficult by the need to produce the required high resolution products within an operationally viable time frame. It is toward this end that the Naval Research Laboratory, in collaboration with the High Performance Computing Section of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Forecasts Systems Laboratory (NOAA FSL), has embarked on developing a parallel version of the Coupled Oceanic Atmospheric Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS, Hodur 1997). The COAMPS is a nonhydrostatic fully compressible finite difference model which uses the Arakawa-C grid stagger. The purpose of this paper is to provide a brief overview of the effort to parallelize COAMPS together with two examples illustrating the naval need for parallel computational capability.

Book excerpt: The Coupled Ocean/Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS) is coupled utilizing the Earth System Modeling Framework and validated for five test cases: 1) Adriatic Sea, 2) Ligurian Sea, 3) Monterey Bay, CA, 4) Kuroshio Extension System Study and 5) Coastal Peru. The COAMPS system makes use of meteorological observations including radiosondes, satellite data, ship reports, and ocean observations with time-dependent global atmospheric lateral boundary conditions from the Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS). Time-dependent ocean boundary conditions are derived from global the Navy Coastal Ocean Model. Atmospheric and oceanographic forecast model output includes surface and upper-air meteorological fields, sea surface temperature (SST), three-dimensional (3D) ocean temperature (T), and salinity (S), velocity, two-dimensional (2D) mixed layer depth (MLD) and ocean acoustic products. The validation efforts contained in this report focus on the upper ocean (mixed layer), heat fluxes, near surface winds, temperature, moisture, the air-sea interaction, and marine boundary layer characteristics.

Book excerpt: The U.S. Navy's requirement for a computer prediction system for marine fog and stratus dates back to the 1970s when meteorological models were being introduced to the fleet. The Naval Research Laboratory's Coupled Ocean/ Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS) is a leap forward in the Navy's numerical modeling ability but it still does not show great skill in fog forecasting. COAMPS has been 'tuned', or adjusted for certain constants and parameterizations, so that it has the minimum error for the maximum area. This tuning is a common practice for all numerical models. The objective of this thesis is to determine if changes can be made to the existing COAMPS code based on reasonable physical experiments for a specific location to help solve the numerical fog forecasting problem. The effectiveness of these experiments was first measured by comparing a modeled cloud edge to satellite imagery of Monterey, California taken during a week in August 2000 under a variety of foggy conditions. Comparisons were also made with observations taken from an aircraft, land stations and a vertical profiler. The experiments, specifically those regarding changes to the autoconversion and turbulent kinetic energy schemes, showed that while a perfect solution has not been found, it is possible to modify the model physics codes and optimize its performance in a specific region.

This book was released on 1999-12-01 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Navy is aggressively pursuing mesoscale atmospheric modeling. The Coupled Ocean/Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS) has been developed by the Naval Research Lab in Monterey, California to meet this task. A forecast system employing COAMPS, called the Tactical Atmospheric Mesoscale System- Real Time (TAMS-RT), is currently being field tested at two of the Navy's major regional weather facilities in Manama, Bahrain and San Diego, California. Mesoscale modeling is a complex process that requires detailed knowledge of mesoscale forcing and responses, as well as a capable data display system to make the best use of this new capability. While the challenge of interpretation of forecasts on the mesoscale has increased, the time available for producing forecasts has, if anything, decreased. Optimal methods of evaluation and display are needed that enable a forecaster to rapidly, yet skillfully complete this process. This thesis illustrates analysis techniques to aid in rapidly evaluating the utility of any given mesoscale forecast and proposes optimal methods for 3-D visualization and interpretation of various weather parameters. Using these techniques and methods, TAMS-RT performance is then evaluated for critical mesoscale weather phenomena as defined by NPMOC San Diego, including the mesoscale weather effects associated with frontal passages and the Catalina Eddy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US Navy conducted a Ship ASW Readiness and Effectiveness Measuring exercise (SHAREM 110) in the Persian Gulf during 5-17 February 1995. As part of SHAREM, additional mesoscale measurements were made by ships and aircraft. After the exercise, the Naval Research Laboratory, Monterey ran the research version of the Navy Coupled Ocean/Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS) for the entire SHAREM period, without incorporating the mesoscale observations into model data assimilation. The purpose of this research is to study the mesoscale features in the SHAREM data set and to evaluate the COAMPS predictions of these phenomena. The period of 8-11 February 1995 includes three distinct synoptic and mesoscale phenomena, which will be studied in this paper. A mesoscale disturbance is evident in ship soundings and aircraft data on 8 February, in advance of a cold front. The front passed through the Persian Gulf on 9 February, and ship and aircraft data for that day shows subsidence, drying, and establishment of a strong inversion behind the front. A Shamal occurs on 10-11 February. Aircraft and ship data on 11 February provide in situ measurements of the Shamal and the resultant deep mixed layer in the Persian Gulf. This paper includes evaluations of COAMPS at three separate times: 06-12 UTC 8 February, 06 UTC 9 February, and 06 UTC 11 February 1995. In addition, evaluation of COAMPS for a period of strong land-sea breeze circulations during 14-15 February will be reported at the conference.

Book excerpt: Coupled Atmosphere-Ocean Dynamics of Climate Variability and Climate Change presents the patterns, mechanisms, and predictability of climate variability and anthropogenic climate change. Based on a graduate course the author has taught over 25 years, this book provides the physical foundation for those who are interested in fundamental questions such as: why climate varies from one year to another; how predictable climate is; and how climate will change in the face of increasing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This is the first comprehensive and systematic treatment of this subject that simultaneously draws on the latest research and is accessible for graduate students. The book takes a step-by-step systematic approach to coupled ocean-atmosphere interactions. This allows a wide range of comparative views: climate modes among and across different tropical ocean basins, ocean feedback on the atmosphere (in and out of the tropics), and spontaneous internal oscillation versus externally forced climate change. Such comparative views offer unprecedented insight into the dynamics of climate variability and predictability. This book can be used as supplementary reading for advanced undergraduate students, as coursework in climate dynamics, modeling, variability, and change, and as a reference book and research monograph for researchers in ocean, atmospheric, climate, and earth system sciences. Delivers the first authored textbook on ocean-atmosphere interactions that give rise to climate variability/predictability and shape regional patterns of anthropogenic climate change Contains historical accounts of major breakthroughs in the field Includes homework questions, helping to reinforce key concepts and applications

Book excerpt: The Naval Research Laboratory's Coupled Ocean/Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS) is being developed into a parallel, scalable model in a joint collaborative effort with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The initial focus is on the atmospheric forecast model, which solves a coupled, three-dimensional set of dynamical equations using finite differences. A distributed/shared memory parallel programming paradigm is used. Distributed memory parallelism is achieved through a two-dimensional domain decomposition technique, with internodal communication accomplished using Message Passing Interface (MPI), and OpenMP is used to provide parallelism within a node. Initial performance results on both the IBM-SP and Cray-T3E are presented.
