The arrange ments of a monthly magazine are not subject to the exigencies of the hour. For my latter numbers, as well as for their predecessors, I claim a position of literary worth and current value. Taking my inspiration direct from the earliest days of sylvanus urban, I have endeavoured, while modernising the Gem/(man's Afagwsim, to main tain for it that special place which it has always held among its contemporaries. Just as I feel sure Cave would have done in connection with such a work as The Impeachment of the House of Brunswick, I have had Mr. Bradlaugh's views duly considered and exposed. Whether Dr. Johnson would have consented to my pre decessor granting to the Republican the privilege of replying I am not prepared to say; but in these days we do not care to ignore discussion upon any public question; and for my own part I hope my respect for the right of reply is, of the age, just, and true to that spirit of inquiry which cannot be hurtful to a good cause. In my next volume, therefore, will be found Mr. Charles Bradlaugh's answer to my Contributor's strictures in this. Meanwhile let me commend to the excited frequenters of the Hall of Science, Old street, the remark of Dr. Johnson to Sir Adam Ferguson - Why all this childish jealousy of the power of the Crown? The Crown has not power enough. When I say that all Governments are alike, I consider that in no Government can power be abused long manltind will not bear it. If a Sovereign oppresses his people to a great degree, they will rise and cut off his head. Had not the people of Franc: thought themselves honoured in sharing the brilliant actions of Louis XIV., they would not have endured him and we may say the same of the King of Prussia's people. But why this should be the case I am at a lose to conceive, for the very object of these clubs is to improve the farmer's position, whether it be by the discus sion of the routine of farm work, the most ap proved system of farm management, or by calling attention to political or other causes which affect agriculture; and if such be the case, surely it is the bounden duty of every farmer to do his best, however humble it may be, to improve his position and also that of his fellow men. I have often heard invidious remarks made by farmers, not members of a farmers' club, on the management of those connected with a club. They forget that the very fact of belonging to a club shews a de sire for improvement, and the mere fact of individual management or mismanagement has nothing to do with the utility of farmers' clubs. Their usefulness embraces a much wider range. If Arthur Young had stayed at home and attended to his own farm, no doubt it would have been better managed, and he would have been the gainer by it; but the agricultural world would have lost the benefit of his extended observations. Of linseed cake, in addition to the stone of raw grain, will produce only the same quantity of beef in the same time as the non-dried malted grain. A horse daily consuming non-dried malt, the produce of 1 stone of raw grain, with 10 lb. Of hay, will increase 15 stone in weight in ten weeks; whereas, with raw grain, it becomes diseased, hair falls from the skin, loses eyesight, is attacked with grease, and becomes a useless animal. A horse debilitated by disease is quickly restored to health by the use of non-dried malt; but raw barley or wheat will destroy life. Sows and sucking pigs may be fattened with non-dried malt; while raw barley will vitiate the milk, and poison the young pig.
