Book Synopsis Doping in Sport by : Angela J. Schneider
Download or read book Doping in Sport written by Angela J. Schneider and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-28 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers ethical arguments about performance enhancing drugs in sport in a global context. It examines: * The forces that are bringing about the debate of ethical issues in performance enhancing drugs in sport * The sources of ethical debates in different continents and countries * The variation of ethical arguments in different cultural, political, ideological and sports systems. Whilst there has been a significant body of work that has looked at the importance of ethical issues in performance enhancing drugs in sport - there has been little, if any, consideration of the various ethical concepts in different countries and cultures involving sport. This is a major omission. This book fills the gap and provides a thorough review and analysis of the ethical literature on performance enhancing drugs in sport in the global society. It makes a major contribution to the worldwide anti-doping campaign in sport. This volume was previously published as a special issue of the journal Sport In Global Society.
Download or read book Dying to Win written by Barrie Houlihan and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drug abuse in sport has now become an acute international problem, which undermines the integrity of sport and is a real danger to the health of thousands of athletes. The second edition of this publication has been updated to take account of new forms of drug abuse in the sports world, as well as developments in genetic engineering and gene therapy. It also contains a list of useful internet sources. A key finding is that the control of doping, including the harmonisation of both practice and policy among the major world sports bodies, requires a re-evaluation of the direction of future anti-doping policy, particularly in the light of the recent establishment of the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Book Synopsis Sport and Discrimination in Europe by : William Gasparini
Download or read book Sport and Discrimination in Europe written by William Gasparini and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2010 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents the main contributions and considerations of young European research workers and journalists on the question of discrimination in sport. Taking a multidisciplinary approach to the social sciences, The authors show how the media and those working in media can act as a relay, through their coverage of sports, For initiatives on the fight against discrimination. They also illustrate in detail not only the reality of discrimination in sport and the controversy surrounding this issue in the member states of the Council of Europe, but also the strength of research incipient in this field. The Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport (EPAS) hopes to contribute in this way to the development of European research on education through sport involving researchers from different countries in order to better understand the phenomenon of discrimination.

Book Synopsis Ethics and Sport in Europe by : Dominique Bodin
Download or read book Ethics and Sport in Europe written by Dominique Bodin and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defending ethics in sport is vital in order to combat the problems of corruption, violence, drugs, extremism and other forms of discrimination it is currently facing. Sport reflects nothing more and nothing less than the societies in which it takes place. However, if sport is to continue to bring benefits for individuals and societies, it cannot afford to neglect its ethical values or ignore these scourges. The major role of the Council of Europe and the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport (EPAS) in addressing the new challenges to sports ethics was confirmed by the 11th Council of Europe Conference of Ministers responsible for Sport, held in Athens on 11 and 12 December 2008. A political impetus was given on 16 June 2010 by the Committee of Ministers, with the adoption of an updated version of the Code of Sports Ethics (Recommendation CM/Rec(2010)9), emphasising the requisite co-ordination between governments and sports organisations. The EPAS prepared the ministerial conference and stepped up its work in an international conference organised with the University of Rennes, which was attended by political leaders, athletes, researchers and officials from the voluntary sector. The key experiences described in the conference and the thoughts that it prompted are described in this publication. All the writers share the concern that the end result should be practical action - particularly in terms of the setting of standards - that falls within the remit of the EPAS and promotes the Council of Europe's core values.
Book Synopsis EU Employment Law by : Catherine Barnard
Download or read book EU Employment Law written by Catherine Barnard and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-08-09 with total page 1088 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of EU Employment Law provides a complete revision and update of the leading English language text in the field. The coverage in the new edition has been expanded with material on all the latest developments, incorporating the changes made by the Lisbon Treaty; the EU2020 strategy; the Charter of Fundamental Rights; the 'Article 19 Directives'; the Temporary Agency Work Directive; the revisions to the existing including the Directives on Parental Leave and European Works Council; and the new Social Security Regulations 883/2004. It also analyses the ever-expanding body of employment case law, including the momentous decisions in Viking, Laval, Rueffert, and Commission v Luxembourg. The book begins with an examination of the development of EU employment law focusing on the shift from employment law to employment policy. The text then studies rule-making in the field of employment law, considering both the traditional routes to legislation and governance techniques such as the Open Method of Coordination. The final chapters look closely at the substantive area of employment law, examining the free movement of persons, equal treatment, health and safety and working conditions, the restructuring of enterprises, worker participation, and collective action. Throughout, the book addresses the fundamental question as to the purpose of EU employment law: is it primarily economic, or social, or both?
