Book Synopsis Investigating the Structure of the Core-mantle Boundary Region Using S and P Diffracted Waves by : Ursula J. Manners
Download or read book Investigating the Structure of the Core-mantle Boundary Region Using S and P Diffracted Waves written by Ursula J. Manners and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earthquake mislocation is a potentially large source of error in tomographic inversions. We compared three methods of dealing with location error. We find that models made using iterative relocation do not fit the data well, whereas models made using projection and a joint inversion for perturbation in velocity and earthquake location do. An examination of the effects of different relocation techniques on the correlation of shear velocity with bulk sound speed shows that iterative relocations results in lower and possibly negative correlations between shear velocity and bulk sound speed over the entire mantle.
Download or read book Post-Perovskite written by Kei Hirose and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 2007-01-09 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book summarizes findings on the newly discovered "post-perovskite phase transition" in the lower mantle that may explain the nature of the D" layer and has important implications for many fields in solid Earth geophysics, such as mineral physics, seismology, geodynamics, and geochemistry. It is based on a series of conferences on the Earth's mantle and deep interior held in 2004 and 2005. Topics discussed including the following. * Rapid progress in the study of Earth's lowermost mantle during the first three years after the discovery of post-perovskite. * The synergistic, multidisciplinary analysis of post-perovskite enabled by recent advances in experimental and theoretical methods, seismic data analyses, and computational geodynamics. * The insights provided into the major internal thermo-chemical boundary layer of the Earth, offering advanced understanding that mirrors that for the lithosphere over the past 30 years. * The exploration of the dynamical effect of post-perovskite phase change that occurs right above the CMB with extremely steep Clapeyron slope, whose magnitude is three to four times greater than for upper-mantle phase transitions. * The summary of remaining unsolved problems and future studies on the post-perovskite and lowermost mantle. Post-Perovskite: The Last Mantle Phase Transition presents the full span of post-perovskite attributes, including characterization by experimental and theoretical mineral physics, seismological interpretations, and dynamical considerations. This book illustrates why the last silicate phase transition in the mantle is eliciting such excitement and concentrated effort."--Publisher's website.

Book Synopsis Treatise on Geophysics, Volume 7 by : David Bercovici
Download or read book Treatise on Geophysics, Volume 7 written by David Bercovici and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-05-17 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treatise on Geophysics: Mantle Dynamics, Volume 7 aims to provide both a classical and state-of-the-art introduction to the methods and science of mantle dynamics, as well as survey leading order problems (both solved and unsolved) and current understanding of how the mantle works. It is organized around two themes: (1) how is mantle convection studied; and (2) what do we understand about mantle dynamics to date. The first four chapters are thus concerned with pedagogical reviews of the physics of mantle convection; laboratory studies of the fluid dynamics of convection relevant to the mantle; theoretical analysis of mantle dynamics; and numerical analysis and methods of mantle convection. The subsequent chapters concentrate on leading issues of mantle convection itself, which include the energy budget of the mantle; the upper mantle and lithosphere in and near the spreading center (mid-ocean ridge) environment; the dynamics of subducting slabs; hot spots, melting anomalies, and mantle plumes; and finally, geochemical mantle dynamics and mixing. - Self-contained volume starts with an overview of the subject then explores each topic in detail - Extensive reference lists and cross references with other volumes to facilitate further research - Full-color figures and tables support the text and aid in understanding - Content suited for both the expert and non-expert
Book Synopsis The Earth's Lower Mantle by : Felix V. Kaminsky
Download or read book The Earth's Lower Mantle written by Felix V. Kaminsky and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-22 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first overview of the composition and structure of the Earth’s lower mantle. The first part focuses on the study of lower-mantle minerals, identified as inclusions in diamonds from different regions of the world. Three associations are established among the lower-mantle minerals: ultramafic, mafic, and carbonatic. The carbonatic association is of particular interest because it characterizes the media of natural diamond formation. In turn, the second part analyzes the structure of the lower mantle, revealing its heterogeneous composition. It is based on the results of experiments demonstrating phase transitions in lower-mantle minerals, and on seismological data. Deep-seated earthquakes point to the presence within the lower mantle of numerous seismic boundaries caused by mineral structure transitions. In closing, the last part of the book compares observed data with experimental data, highlighting several discrepancies that indicate Earth may have a more complex planetary history than previously assumed, and examining its primarily non-chondritic composition.

Book Synopsis Constitution of the Earth's Interior by : J. Leliwa-Kopystynski
Download or read book Constitution of the Earth's Interior written by J. Leliwa-Kopystynski and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constitution of the Earth's Interior discusses the physical and evolutionary principles connecting various elements of the knowledge about structure and dynamics of the Earth's interior. This work is divided into eight chapters that primarily focus on the physical, chemical, and petrological state. This text contains general data on a general stationary model, which is described by equations of state combining the basic parameters, including pressure, temperature, density, gravity acceleration, and mineral composition within the Earth's interior. Considerable chapters concern the chemical and petrological composition of the matter in the Earth's interior. The remaining chapters describe models containing inhomogeneities used to illustrate processes connected with phase transitions. This book will be of great value to geologists, physicists, and researchers.
Book Synopsis Geodynamics of Lithosphere & Earth’s Mantle by : Jaroslava Plomerova
Download or read book Geodynamics of Lithosphere & Earth’s Mantle written by Jaroslava Plomerova and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plate tectonics has significantly broadened our view of the dynamics of continental evolution, involving both the processes currently active at the surface and those extending deep into the interior of the Earth. Seismic anisotropy provides some of the most diagnostic evidence for mapping past and present deformation of the entire crustmantle system. This volume contains papers presented originally at an international workshop at the Chateau of Trest in the Czech Republic in 1996. This workshop brought together geophysicists and geologists who work in the field of observational and theoretical seismology, mineral and rock physics, gravity studies and geodynamic modelling. Topics include large-scale anisotropy of the Earth's mantle, mantle heterogeneity vs. anisotropy 3-D velocity and density structures and inferences on mantle dynamics, mineral and rock physics studies, and mathematical aspects of complex wave propagation.
