Despite the hostile environment of space, the ISS has suitable living conditions for its workers. Astronauts breathe clean air, eat shrimp cocktail, exercise daily, take baths, and take out the trash, in zero gravity, of course. Floating around the ISS, the astronauts have important jobs, conducting experiments and doing research projects. Author Henry M. Holden explores the base camp to the universe from its design and construction to the amazing astronauts who work there.

Book excerpt: From bestselling writer David Graeber—“a master of opening up thought and stimulating debate” (Slate)—a powerful argument against the rise of meaningless, unfulfilling jobs…and their consequences. Does your job make a meaningful contribution to the world? In the spring of 2013, David Graeber asked this question in a playful, provocative essay titled “On the Phenomenon of Bullshit Jobs.” It went viral. After one million online views in seventeen different languages, people all over the world are still debating the answer. There are hordes of people—HR consultants, communication coordinators, telemarketing researchers, corporate lawyers—whose jobs are useless, and, tragically, they know it. These people are caught in bullshit jobs. Graeber explores one of society’s most vexing and deeply felt concerns, indicting among other villains a particular strain of finance capitalism that betrays ideals shared by thinkers ranging from Keynes to Lincoln. “Clever and charismatic” (The New Yorker), Bullshit Jobs gives individuals, corporations, and societies permission to undergo a shift in values, placing creative and caring work at the center of our culture. This book is for everyone who wants to turn their vocation back into an avocation and “a thought-provoking examination of our working lives” (Financial Times).

Book excerpt: Readers of this transportive text will learn how much the writers of the movie The Martian really got right when they described how a stranded astronaut survived on the red planet. They will also investigate the conditions that actual Mars colonists will face. Since the 1800s, sci-fi writers have imagined colonizing other planets. Today, science fiction is becoming reality, as scientists plan actual colonies in the solar system. This volume considers some of the challenges in colonization of the Moon, Mars, asteroids, and the moons of Jupiter and Saturn, and looks at the ethics involved in taking over another planet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world of science has been transformed. Where once astronomers sat at the controls of giant telescopes in remote locations, praying for clear skies, now they have no need to budge from their desks, as data arrives in their inbox. And what they receive is overwhelming; projects now being built provide more data in a few nights than in the whole of humanity's history of observing the Universe. It's not just astronomy either - dealing with this deluge of data is the major challenge for scientists at CERN, and for biologists who use automated cameras to spy on animals in their natural habitats. Artificial intelligence is one part of the solution - but will it spell the end of human involvement in scientific discovery? No, argues Chris Lintott. We humans still have unique capabilities to bring to bear - our curiosity, our capacity for wonder, and, most importantly, our capacity for surprise. It seems that humans and computers working together do better than computers can on their own. But with so much scientific data, you need a lot of scientists - a crowd, in fact. Lintott found such a crowd in the Zooniverse, the web-based project that allows hundreds of thousands of enthusiastic volunteers to contribute to science. In this book, Lintott describes the exciting discoveries that people all over the world have made, from galaxies to pulsars, exoplanets to moons, and from penguin behaviour to old ship's logs. This approach builds on a long history of so-called 'citizen science', given new power by fast internet and distributed data. Discovery is no longer the remit only of scientists in specialist labs or academics in ivory towers. It's something we can all take part in. As Lintott shows, it's a wonderful way to engage with science, yielding new insights daily. You, too, can help explore the Universe in your lunch hour.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was advised to start this book with where I studied and who my teachers where. I'm not going to do that. I am an ordinary person with unordinary thoughts. My autobiography consists of what I've done, mainly discoveries combined with theory. This is what you are holding in your hands now, and the incredible applications that follow from them. f or many people where they studied and who taught them it is important, but f or me it does not matter. Pierre Fermat was educated as a lawyer. In his spare time he was engaged in mathematics and left to mankind a number of mathematical discoveries. Evariste Galois did not even finish high school and was left without a degree because he could not take the Matura exam in mathematics. However, he left humanity almost all modern mathematics. Thomas Edison was almost illiterate, but this did not prevent him from becoming one of the most prolific inventors in his time. At the same time, tens of thousands of scientists work in institutes, leaving piles of books to mankind without any discoveries in them. In their scientific works there are only findings. Most of them are convinced that they do not make any discoveries because everything is already discovered. the truth is quite different. What we know is limited, but what we do not know has NO boundaries. I wrote this book because some omnipotence forced me to do this. My research showed that there are amazing events that are associated with rapid technological and spiritual development and change in the structure of human society. All this will be accompanied by natural cataclysms. Therefore, some biblical texts are misunderstood and misinterpreted. Under these conditions it is impossible to stay calm. Don't let the mathematical formulas scare you. You can do without them. Read on and you will understand, because it is a theory of reality.

Book excerpt: The much-anticipated anthology on Plato'sTimaeus-Plato's singular dialogue on the creation of the universe, the nature of the physical world, and the place of persons in the cosmos-examining all dimensions of one of the most important books in Western Civilization: its philosophy, cosmology, science, and ethics, its literary aspects and reception. Contributions come from leading scholars in their respective fields, including Sir Anthony Leggett, 2003 Nobel Laureate for Physics. Parts of or earlier versions of these papers were first presented at the Timaeus Conference, held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in September of 2007.To this day, Plato's Timaeus grounds the form of ethical and political thinking called Natural Law-the view that there are norms in nature that provide the patterns for our actions and ground the objectivity of human values. Beyond the intellectual content of the dialogue's core, its literary frame is also the source of the myth of Atlantis, giving the West the concept of the "e;lost world."e;

Book excerpt: Find God’s vision for your job. Reclaim God’s vision for your life. Many Christians fall victim to one of two main problems when it comes to work: either they are idle in their work, or they have made an idol of it. Both of these mindsets are deadly misunderstandings of how God intends for us to think about our employment. In The Gospel at Work, Sebastian Traeger and Greg Gilbert unpack the powerful ways in which the gospel can transform how we do what we do, releasing us from the cultural pressures of both an all-consuming devotion and a punch-in, punch-out mentality—in order to find the freedom of a work ethic rooted in serving Christ. You’ll find answers to some of the tough questions that Christians in the workplace often ask: What factors should matter most in choosing a job? What gospel principles should shape my thinking about how to treat my boss, my co-workers, and my employees? Is full-time Christian work more valuable than my job? Is it okay to be motivated by money? How do you prioritize—or balance—work, family and church responsibilities? Solidly grounded in the gospel, The Gospel at Work confronts both our idleness at work and our idolatry of work with a challenge of its own—to remember that whom we work for is infinitely more important than what we do.
