Book Synopsis Boundary Control by : Edward L. Gibson
Download or read book Boundary Control written by Edward L. Gibson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-07 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The democratization of a national government is only a first step in diffusing democracy throughout a country's territory. Even after a national government is democratized, subnational authoritarian 'enclaves' often continue to deny rights to citizens of local jurisdictions. Gibson offers new theoretical perspectives for the study of democratization in his exploration of this phenomenon. His theory of 'boundary control' captures the conflict pattern between incumbents and oppositions when a national democratic government exists alongside authoritarian provinces (or 'states'). He also reveals how federalism and the territorial organization of countries shape how subnational authoritarian regimes are built and how they unravel. Through a novel comparison of the late nineteenth-century American 'Solid South' with contemporary experiences in Argentina and Mexico, Gibson reveals that the mechanisms of boundary control are reproduced across countries and historical periods. As long as subnational authoritarian governments coexist with national democratic governments, boundary control will be at play.
Book Synopsis Cuba and Revolutionary Latin America by : Dirk Kruijt
Download or read book Cuba and Revolutionary Latin America written by Dirk Kruijt and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cuban revolution served as a rallying cry to people across Latin America and the Caribbean. The revolutionary regime has provided vital support to the rest of the region, offering everything from medical and development assistance to training and advice on guerrilla warfare. Cuba and Revolutionary Latin America is the first oral history of Cuba’s liberation struggle. Drawing on a vast array of original testimonies, Dirk Kruijt looks at the role of both veterans and the post-Revolution fidelista generation in shaping Cuba and the Americas. Featuring the testimonies of over sixty Cuban officials and former combatants, Cuba and Revolutionary Latin America offers unique insight into a nation which, in spite of its small size and notional pariah status, remains one of the most influential countries in the Americas.

Download or read book United States Army Unilateral and Coalition Operations in the 1965 Dominican Republic Intervention written by Lawrence M. Greenberg and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is an examination of 1965 intervention into the Dominican Republic by US forces, primarily from the 82d Airborne Division. Although this study covers the actual armed intervention and subsequent fighting between Dominican rebels and American soldiers, it also delves into the political and strategic reasons behind President Johnson's ordering the military action. As part of this political overview, the report addresses the role of the Organization of American States, the Inter-American Peace Force, and of several Latin nations who participated in the 18 month long intervention. As a part of his presentation, the author highlights the importance of many non-military roles and functions performed by key players to speed the Dominican Civil War to a negotiated close and bring the nation back on the road toward democratic government.
Book Synopsis Natural Resource Governance, Grievances and Conflict by : Janine Romero Valenzuela
Download or read book Natural Resource Governance, Grievances and Conflict written by Janine Romero Valenzuela and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-17 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Janine Romero Valenzuela analyses the Bolivian lithium program in the largest empirical study to date with a focus on local perspectives and governance, identifying grievances and conflict dimensions. The case study shows that it is particularly an altered governance approach, the local trust in government and the high expectations that the Morales administration could create around lithium that influence local viewpoints. By applying the meaningful grievance concept on the local level, the book supports a further refinement of theories on a resource-governance-conflict-link.
