Book excerpt: The Pentose Phosphate Pathway aims to explore the pentose phosphate cycle and the practical techniques applied in its investigation. The main focus of the book is the pentose phosphate cycle in animals as well as microorganisms, and does not discuss the one related to photosynthesis. The book covers the formulation of the pathway, its types, and its alternative formulations; the preparation, processes, and analysis of the pathway; and the enzymes involved. Also covered in the book are the intermediates in intact cells and tissues; distribution of enzymes among different tissues and species; the operation, regulation, and overall control of the pathway; and the clinical, nutritional, and metabolic aspects of the pathway. The text is recommended for biologists and biochemists who would like to understand further the pentose phosphate pathway and the processes related to it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The liver is an exceptionally complex and diverse organ that functions both as an exocrine and an endocrine gland. It secretes bile, which contains many con stituents in addition to bile salts, and it synthesizes and releases many substances in response to the body's demands, including prohormones, albumin, clotting factors, glucose, fatty acids, and various lipoproteins. It has a dual blood supply providing a rich mixture of nutrients and other absorbed substances via the portal vein and oxygen-rich blood via the hepatic artery. This functional heterogeneity is accompanied by cellular heterogeneity. The liver contains many cell types including hepatic parachymal cells, Kiipffer cells, Ito cells, and endothelial cells. The most abundant cell type, the parenchymal cells, are biochemically and structurally heterogeneous. The cells in the oxygen-rich areas of the portal triad appear more dependent on oxidative metabolism, whereas those around the central vein (pericentral, perivenous, or centrolobular areas) are more dependent upon an anaerobic mechanism. Throughout this volume the latter three terms are used synonymously by various authors to indicate the five to eight layers of cells radiating from the central vein. Structural and metabolic heterogeneity of hepatic parenchymal cells has been demonstrated by a variety of approaches, including histochemical, ultra structural, and ultramicrobiochemical studies. This microheterogeneity is linked to the physiological functions of the liver and its response to injurious substances.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive and authoritative reference work examines the role of the endocrine pancreas in the regulation of fat, protein, and carbohydrate metabolism. The effects of hormones are broadly examined with emphasis on the gene, the cell and the organism as a whole. The functions of the pancreatic hormones in the integrated response of the body to various physiologic challenges are discussed. Following a general introduction by Sir Philip Randle, the book is divided into four sections:1. The Islets of Langerhans, 2. Target Tissues for Metabolic Regulatory Hormones, 3. Influence of Hormones Acting as Acute Metabolic Regulators on the Actions of Islet Hormones, and 4. Integrated Hormonal Responses to Physiological Challenges. The fourth part covers many interesting conditions such as pregnancy, aging, obesity, hypoglycemia, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, and starvation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The metabolic regulation of a cell system is of critical importance in systems biology, and a robust model of these mechanisms is essential in predicting the effects on the metabolism of both the culture environment and the knockout of specific genes. Bacterial cellular metabolic systems focuses on this highly topical subject in relation to culture environment and provides a detailed analysis from gene level to metabolic level regulation, as well as offering a discussion of the most recent modelling approaches. The book begins with an introduction to metabolic mechanisms and to the metabolic regulation of a cell, before moving on to discussing the action of global regulators in response to a specific culture environment. The second half of the book examines conventional flux balance analysis and its applications, 13C-metabolic flux analysis, and the effect of a specific gene knockout on the metabolism. - Comprehensive account of metabolic regulation via global regulators in response to changes in the culture environment - Basic formulation of 13C-metabolic flux analysis based on 13C-labelling experiments - Systems biology approach for the modelling and computer simulation of the main metabolic pathways of a cell system

Book excerpt: Despite the considerable success in treating diseases of the heart and blood vessels, they still remain the major cause of mortality throughout the world. One of the reasons underlying this problem is our lack of understanding of the molecular and cellular aspects of the processes involved. These problems are fully discussed in Cellular Interactions in Cardiac Pathophysiology, which draws together 25 contributions from leading investigators from all parts of the world. The contributions are grouped under three headings: Extracellular matrix and cardiocyte interaction; Myocytic adaptations and myocardial injury; and Signal transduction.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive update on clinical and basic aspects of diabetic nephropathy Caused by an epidemic increase in obesity and diabetes and metabolic syndromes, diabetic nephropathy has become a leading cause of end-stage renal disease in many developed countries. The publication at hand provides a concise overview of the current state of clinical and basic research in the field. It starts with a summary of the epidemiology and genetics of diabetic nephropathy in different ethnic groups, followed by a review of its clinical manifestation, the link with the metabolic syndrome and obesity, and the pathology of diabetic nephropathy. Building on this basis, the latest findings on pathogenetic, epigenetic and inflammatory mechanisms are presented. The publication also looks at advances in the areas of tubulopathy and the kallikrein-kinin system as well as at the latest animal models and the role of lipoproteins and proteomics. This is followed by a discussion of promising therapeutic approaches such as experimental anti-fibrotic strategies, stem cell therapy and pancreatic transplantation; expert reviews on the emerging entity of new onset diabetes after transplantation and the preventive strategies for diabetic nephropathy conclude the material presented. Written by a panel of leading international experts, this book is highly recommended for nephrologists, diabetologists, internist, transplant physicians, scientists, geneticists, epidemiologists and stem cell biologists working in the field of diabetic nephropathy.
