Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Continental Element in the Flora of South Sweden: Inaugural Dissertation Much attention has been given to the western limits of continental species by phytogeographers. They' have especially played a conspicuous part in discussions and examinations of the history of the Middle European flora. The present work' may be looked upon as a contribution to the analysis of the distribution of continental species in Western and Central Europe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foundations of Biogeography provides facsimile reprints of seventy-two works that have proven fundamental to the development of the field. From classics by Georges-Louis LeClerc Compte de Buffon, Alexander von Humboldt, and Charles Darwin to equally seminal contributions by Ernst Mayr, Robert MacArthur, and E. O. Wilson, these papers and book excerpts not only reveal biogeography's historical roots but also trace its theoretical and empirical development. Selected and introduced by leading biogeographers, the articles cover a wide variety of taxonomic groups, habitat types, and geographic regions. Foundations of Biogeography will be an ideal introduction to the field for beginning students and an essential reference for established scholars of biogeography, ecology, and evolution. Book Synopsis Classification of Plant Communities by : R.H. Whittaker
Download or read book Classification of Plant Communities written by R.H. Whittaker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The natural communities of the world are diverse, and many schools of ecology have developed classifications of communities in partial independence of one another. There is consequently a vast and widely dispersed literature on the classification of plant and animal communities, comprising divergent approaches of different schools and representing a great experiment on the usefulness of different possibilities for classification. The editor sought in a re view monograph of 1962 to summarize these schools and their history, and in 1973 published a treatise on 'Ordination and Clas sification of Communities' as volume 5 of the Handbook of Vegetation Science. We were fortunate, in preparing the latter work, to have a truly international panel of authors to discuss different major ap proaches to classification. This second edition of the book of 1973 is intended to make the work more widely available in a less expensive form as companion volumes on ordination and on classification of plant communities.
