Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Pulpit: A Study of Homiletic Sources and Characteristics The difficulties of his task and the inadequacy Of its realization are fully recognized by the author. It isa large generalization, and a sense of insufficiency is inevitable both for reader and writer. But in a field hitherto but little worked, one may make a venture even without the assurance of supreme success. Full access at first hand to all the material with which the volume deals cannot, of course, be claimed. But with most of the preachers Of the last century and of our own day, to whom reference has been made, he is fairly familiar at first hand. Many distinguished names that are an honor to the modern pulpit are reluctantly omitted from these pages. Exclusion has been a difficult task. But limitations of personal acquaintance and the limits of the volume must justify it. Despite the largeness of his venture and the defects Of its execution, the writer is not without hope that it may become tributary in some measure to a better knowledge Of what lies back Of the preaching of our day and to a somewhat more intelligent estimate Of its value. With this desire at least he commits his venture to whatever fortunes may await it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lamps of the Temple: Shadows From the Lights of the Modern Pulpit Man; a most impertinent work, verily, but con taining words of Promise. Ignorance is bliss. The present writer never looks at the reviews. No fear there fore, of his being too much irritated. He will, however, introduce this volume, by saying, at once, how hearty his faith is in the power of the Pulpit, and the men in it, to do a very brave and important work if they will, although that work is not being done very efficiently now. Perhaps the writer may relate a little scene which occurred to his vision the other day. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Masters of Pulpit Discourse Most the criticisms in this volume were written during the lifetime of their several subjects, and then published anonymously as a series under a common title in "The Homilctic Review." It was from the first in the thought of the author to gather them eventually into a book. When the time approached for doing this, he, with a view to making the list of preachers considered inclusive enough to satisfy any just expectation which the proposal of such a volume might be conceived as awakening, felt it desirable to add a few names not embraced in the original series. The supplementary papers resulting were published independently under the name of the author. It was believed that to change the tense in which these papers were first written, and to recast their form, would be to deprive them of a certain vividness due to the contemporaneous conditions attending and alternating their production. Accordingly, though they have been carefully reconsidered and revised throughout, and retrenched slightly in some cases, and in some cases considerably enlarged, still they are substantially the same in their text and their tenor as when they originally appeared. The author, however, in the present reproduction of his criticisms, has acted somewhat as a kind of posthumous editor to himself, prefacing nearly all of them with explanations and comments which he hopes will be found pertinent and acceptable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The People's Church Pulpit The Congregationalist, printed at Boston, gave the following account of the religious services at the opening, and not the dedication, of the People's Church, in its issue of February 21. "The 'People's Church' in this city was, for some reason, the hardest to dedicate of which we ever heard. It seems to have taken one day more than a week." Remembering how frequently persons "do err, not knowing the Scriptures," the pastor of the church took the precaution to provide against his being charged like the Athenians, with spending his time in announcing "some new thing," by printing within a scroll on the cover of the programmes, which he confidently believed would arrest the attention of every person receiving one of them, the following, found in the thirty-ninth verse of the twenty-third chapter of the third book of Moses, called Leviticus: - "Ye shall keep a feast unto the Lord seven days. On the first day shall be a Sabbath, and on the eighth day shall be a Sabbath." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lamps of the Temple: Crayon Sketches of the Men of the Modern Pulpit The Modern Pulpit, it must be admitted, has been surrounded and assailed by a storm of whims and diflfl culties, such as have not beset the rostrum in any pre vious age. On the one hand it has had to address a more intelligent, watchful, sceptical, critical audience, than the Ancient Pulpit; nor can there be any doubt that the audience to which it has had to address itself, while more intelligent, has been much larger_than in any former age. On the other hand, it has had to speak to and in a perfect sea of excitement. Never before was the human mind so antagonistic and in many parts of our country the minds most active and strenuous in their prosecution of the aims of commerce have been also constant in their attendance upon pulpit ministra tions. They are worthy Of the man, Of his Church, Of his many friends, and of a place on the table Of all, laymen and preachers. They who read will say, Why is the volume not double its present size? But no volume can convey the charm of the preacher's wonderful presence or superb man ner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Pulpit Viewed in Its Relation to the State of Society College at Spring Hill, near Birmingham. The plan of a building, to be raised by public subscription, ufficiently spacious to become the residence of fifty students, and which, with its furniture, will cost, it is calculated, little less than has been agreed upon; and such progress has been made in obtaining contributions toward that Object, through the inde fatigable labours of my esteemed friend and brother, the Rev. Timothy East, as to warrant the expectation, that within five years the intended edifice will be raised. Early in the next year, also, a building, on a scale no less extended, and dedicated to the same objects, will be completed near Manchester, nearly the whole cost. Of which has been met by the liberality of the dissenting churches in Lancashire belonging to one denomination only. If so, it has not been intentional. But it results from the fact, that in many instances, it was impossible for me to tell Whether the thought, or mode of expression, was my own, growing out of the inspiration of the sub ject, or received from some Author, read years ago, whose sentiments and language, I had made my own. This must serve as my apology, as it has been my inten tion, always, to give honor where honor was due. The Book is mainly intended as a memorial, for the friends of my youth, and such as have been companions of my riper years. Yet the subjects are of general in terest; and it is fondly hoped, that they are discussed, and illustrated, in such a way as to interest and profit the public generally. The Discourses are my own, and pre sented by myself, to my friends, and the public, in this brief Introduction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pulpit and American Life Shortly before his death, the late Bishop Henry C. Potter of New York published a book on Eminent Churchmen he had known. Among the number thus treated were great English Churchmen like Dean Stanley of Westminster Abbey, Canon Liddon of St. Paul's, the present Bishop of London, Dr. Winnington-Ingram; and among Americans, Bishop Phillips Brooks, our greatest preacher and one of the noblest Americans. The literary critic of a New York daily, after praising the literary work of the book, added the depreciatory comment that it was a pity so much ability and labor were spent upon men whose work was" entirely aside from the main currents of human interests." Bishop Potter himself is sufficient answer to this common and superficial estimate of the preacher. He was not only pastor of churches in Troy, Boston, and New York, and finally Bishop of the most important diocese of his denomination, but by virtue of his character, position, and attainment was a force in the higher life of the city and nation. He was the first to point out the larger work of the Y. M. C. A. He was a pioneer in adapting the Church to its changed environment. He taught unflinchingly the social implications of Christian doctrine. He proclaimed the social duties of the new industrial order. He exposed the shame of a corrupt public life. He was a citizen Bishop. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Living Pulpit of the Christian Church Christian people to which he belongs, and his brethren will prize it because so many precious hours were drawn from his slender stock of time and strength in order to give it to the church. Dr. William T. Moore has lived a long, useful life and though now far beyond man's allotted time on earth, in many ways his mind is as eager about the great questions of the church as when he first passed through the gates of youth. He has studied the best things and never failed to urge the for ward look and the widest Christian brotherhood. His passion has been to serve. May we not infer from the fact of this book that he believes preaching to be the supreme work of the church? And seeing the place Christ gave it, is it not the greatest work in the world? They were neither prepared nor preached in series, yet there runs through them all a continuity of thought and feeling which would seem to warrant their association under the title by which they are introduced.
