Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Construction of Roads and Pavements Since the publication of the first edition of The Construction of Roads and Pavements, considerable progress has been made in the field of highway engineering, especially with regard to the construction of rural highways. In the second edition, the errors and omissions of the first edition have been corrected so far as they have been noted and new material has been added where it was apparent that practice had really changed. However, the unsettled conditions that have recently prevailed in the highway field have made it very difficult to determine what was real progress and what was merely compromise construction due to abnormal conditions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pavements and Roads: Their Construction and Maintenance The science of paving and the need of proper maintenance of pavements is yet comparatively little understood in this country, and the same is true in even greater degree with regard to roads. The editor of the journal named was led to give the matter special attention by seeing what was done in europe, during his visits there, and finally began an investigation of work on streets and roads in England, France and other countries, the result of which was the gathering of a large and very valuable mass of information in regard to the subject. Of this everything likely to be of practical use in America was printed in T be Engineering and Building Record, and is given here in more convenient shape. With it appears a large quantity of matter from American sources, including the prize essays on Road Construction and Maintenance submitted in the competition instituted by the journal named in December, 1889. It will be seen that the great bulk of the book is made up of records of experience and statements of cost in different places. The comments are based on this experience. Of course a shady road is very nice On a hot day; but such a road can not be kept in good condition, since shade is nearly sure to breed mud holes. Therefore the road officials should use all possible diplomacy to have trees adjoining the road, particularly those on the south side, trimmed with reference to the benefits of the roads. A tall hedge cuts off the view of the adjacent country, shuts out the breeze, and in a dry time keeps in the dust and in a wet time retards the drying of the road. Therefore the road officials should enforce the law concerning cutting of hedges. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Road Making: Construction and Maintenance of Roads The Romans built all of their roads in perfectly straight lines, up hill and down, at a very great expense, as being absolutely the shortest distance between two points. At a later period in history, it was argued that a road must be winding to be agreeable, and many were so built only for this reason. The modern road builder or engineer in general, ignores any such considerations, and has for his aim only to achieve the most, at the least present and future expense. As regards curves in roads in a hilly or mountainous district, we have then the rules never to make a smaller radius than 20 feet, and that only in extraordinary cases. On roads where long log ging or other wagons may be expected, the smallest radius ought to be 50 or 60 feet; and, in general, 40 - 45 feet is none too much. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Roads and Pavements The problems involved in the construction and maintenance Of rural highways differ materially from those which are encountered in the improvement and care Of city streets, and therefore this discussion Of the subject Of Roads and Pavements will be divided into Part I, Country Roads, and Part II, City Pavements. In each division Of the subject certain general principles will first be considered, and the further discussion will be divided according to the several materials in use for road surfaces. It will not always be possible to keep the several portions entirely distinct, but a knowledge Of the intention in this respect will make it easier to understand the method Of presentation or to turn readily to the discussion Of any particular phase Of the subject. The classification Of road surfaces into country Roads and City Pavements is partly according to the most general use Of each, and partly according to the elaborateness Of the construction. According to the somewhat loose classification here adopted road surfaces for country roads consist Of two parts, subgrade and wearing coat; while city pavements consist Of four parts, sub grade, foundation, a binder or cushion course, and a wearing coat. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Location, Construction, and Maintenance of Roads Highway engineers in all parts of the Country generously con tributed material and advice. Special attention was paid' to ascertaining reasons for unusual methods, in order to avoid the publication of anything useful only in restricted localities and possibly leading to trouble if tried generally. The purpose was to furnish information Of a national value rather than an expres sion of the views Of a few individuals, who inevitably have per sonal preferences and prejudices. As each section was finished it was submitted for criticism to engineers or chemists with special knowledge of the subjects discussed, and most of the chap ters formed by combining these revised sections were sent out to other engineers for further criticism. Some of the chapters were revised a number of times before they were finally ap proved. As a consequence, although my name appears as the author on the title page, the book is rather the product Of the cooperation Of over fifty Of the leading American highway engi neers and the patient and intelligent handling Of the details of the work by Miss Isabelle Stockett, at the time chief clerk Of the American Highway Association. This book appeared originally as Part II of the 1917 Good Roads Year Book. Its wide circulation, the many references to it in technical journals, and its use as a textbook by engineering colleges, indicating that the volume had won a distinct position in technical literature, led the Directors of the American High way Association to assign the copyright to the D. Van N ostrand Company, when the Association was dissolved a few days ago. By this action the results Of the cooperative labors of so many specialists will remain available to the public. The first evidence of habitation looked for in a newly-discovered land is the trace Of the footprint Of a human being, whether in the scattered tracks of 'some casual explorers who have gone away again, or the beaten paths of those who have made it their home, and already have their established settlements with regular routes between them.
