Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States faces the realistic and indefinite threat of terrorist attack with nuclear weapons. Whether the United States is successful in preventing such an attack will depend on whether we effectively wield the instruments of security. It will also depend on whether we effectively manage national security processes and apply the law in a manner that both enhances security and upholds our core values. As a result, lawyers, not just presidents, generals, and spies, will decide the outcome of this conflict. This book, first published in 2007, is essential for anyone wanting an understanding of national security law and process. The book includes chapters on constitutional law, the use of force, and homeland security, presented in the context of today's threats and as applied to issues like rendition and electronic surveillance.

The old Continental Congress had had an abysmal record in taking care of the army. Promises made to soldiers during the war remained unfulfilled. At the same time, American distrust of European-style professional armies ran deep. This masterful account of the creation of the Constitution shows our founding fathers at work and brings them to life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a time when American politics has become a spectator sport often viewed with a cynical eye by the people, it is needful to be reminded that our freedom entails a civic responsibility to preserve the legal document that gives us that freedom, the United States Constitution. The Constitution is a contract to which all citizens are parties and upon which they have a right to rely. The people have as well the right to protect themselves from interpretations that go unreasonably beyond the original intent of the Framers. It is clear that in the past the Constitution has been abused to justify decisions made by the legislative and judicial branches of government (as in the Dred Scott case) that have since been overturned. Decisions that extend the powers of the federal government beyond the expressly stated limits declared in the Constitution continue to occur today and remain subjects of intensely debated contention. This book gives detailed examples of where Congress and the Supreme Court have gone outside the people's mutual contract and have, in effect, amended the Constitution. The last chapter outlines a procedure by which citizens, voting directly, can overrule or repeal amendments made by elements of their government.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My strategy in writing about the Constitution of the United States was to determine the intent of our Founding Fathers without creating doubt regarding their meaning and intent. I did not want any reader to think that I was bias and/or that my interpretation or opinion was incorrect. I also did not want any reader to even think that my writing about the Constitution was an interpretation and/or an opinion. My objective was to key in on certain key words and reference the definitions of those words to determine the intent of the Founding Fathers. This approach was selected to remove any personal interpretation and/or opinion on my part so that my writing would automatically avoid any personal interpretation and/or opinion. My secondary objective was to allow the reader to better understand what kind of government and democracy the Founder Fathers intended to create and leave no doubt as to their intent. The third objective was to prove how much more important the Preamble of the Constitution is because the Preamble of the Constitution establishes every federal agency and/or department to aEURoepromote the general WelfareaEUR by the function of those agencies and/or departments. The fourth and last of my objectives was to prove that everything written in the Constitution was ordained, i.e., aEURoeordered by virtue of superior authority,aEUR as per the dictionary definition. Therefore, since constitutional law is the supreme Law of the Land and no one is above the law, as per Article VI of the Constitution, any American that disobeys and/or ignores the Constitution commits a crime against the Constitution, which is the supreme Law of the Land, and becomes a domestic enemy.

Book excerpt: Arming Americans to defend the truth from today's war on facts “In what could be the timeliest book of the year, Rauch aims to arm his readers to engage with reason in an age of illiberalism.” —Newsweek A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice Disinformation. Trolling. Conspiracies. Social media pile-ons. Campus intolerance. On the surface, these recent additions to our daily vocabulary appear to have little in common. But together, they are driving an epistemic crisis: a multi-front challenge to America's ability to distinguish fact from fiction and elevate truth above falsehood. In 2016 Russian trolls and bots nearly drowned the truth in a flood of fake news and conspiracy theories, and Donald Trump and his troll armies continued to do the same. Social media companies struggled to keep up with a flood of falsehoods, and too often didn't even seem to try. Experts and some public officials began wondering if society was losing its grip on truth itself. Meanwhile, another new phenomenon appeared: “cancel culture.” At the push of a button, those armed with a cellphone could gang up by the thousands on anyone who ran afoul of their sanctimony. In this pathbreaking book, Jonathan Rauch reaches back to the parallel eighteenth-century developments of liberal democracy and science to explain what he calls the “Constitution of Knowledge”—our social system for turning disagreement into truth. By explicating the Constitution of Knowledge and probing the war on reality, Rauch arms defenders of truth with a clearer understanding of what they must protect, why they must do—and how they can do it. His book is a sweeping and readable description of how every American can help defend objective truth and free inquiry from threats as far away as Russia and as close as the cellphone.

The Constitution and the term "constitutional" are bandied about in the media a lot, but many people don't even know what's in the document. Readers of this book will discover its content, article by article, as well as look at the Bills of Rights and other amendments. Fun facts enliven the text, and sidebars delve into lesser-known constitutional issues.
