Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conquest of the Old Northwest and Its Settlement by Americans While every American is familiar with the events connected with the discovery and colonization of the eastern shores of our country, the history of the Old Northwest - that magnificent section of our country lying west of the Alleghanies and bounded by the Mississippi, the Ohio, and the Great Lakes - is comparatively unknown. It has a history as varied, as interesting, and as important as that of any other portion of the North American continent, and yet few persons realize the extent to which the events attending its early exploration, its conquest, and its settlement have determined, the destiny of our country as a whole. So far as is known to the writer, no attempt has hitherto been made to relate the story of these events in a connected order, free from extraneous details and adapted to the comprehension and tastes of younger readers. Park-man, in his monumental series of historical narratives, has told this story in connection with many others having but slight relation to the Old Northwest; Justin Winsor, in his very scholarly volumes relating to the French regime in America, has done the same. But the works of these writers are too voluminous for general readers, and being designed for mature thinkers they fail to be attractive to the majority of young people just beginning to acquire a taste for historical reading. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Civilization of the Old Northwest: A Study of Political, Social, and Economic Development, 1788-1812 As the title implies, my aim in this volume has been to pre sent a composite view of the civilization that arose in the formative period of the Old Northwest, between the first settlement at Marietta in 1788 and the outbreak of the War of 1812. In this quarter of a century the foundations of an American civilization were laid in this region which stretched roughly between the Ohio, the Mississippi, and the Great Lakes. At the same time an American colonial system was tested in this same area, and so successfully was it adapted to practical needs that the precedents set up in the Old Northwest, along with the distinctive civilization which developed there, were later transplanted into the Trans Mississippi country. It is the part of the gteat West first discovered and colonized by the French. It was the occasion Of the final struggle for dominion between France and England in North America. It was the thea tre Of one Of the most brilliant and far-reaching military ex ploits Of the Revolution. The disposition to be made Of it at the close Of the Revolution is the most important territo rial question treated in the history Of American diplomacy. After the war, the Northwest began to assume a constantly increasing importance in the national history. It is the origi nal public domain, and the part Of the West first colonized under the authority Of the National Government. It was the first and the most important Territory ever organized by Congress. It is the only part of the United States ever under a secondary constitution like the Ordinance Of 1787. N 0 other equal part of the Union has made in one hundred years such progress along the characteristic lines of American development. Moreover, the Northwest has stood in very important relations to questions Of great national and inter national importance, as the use and ownership of the Missis. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Northwest: The Beginnings of Our Colonial System The Old Northwest is the designation by which the region of country bounded by the Great Northern Lakes and the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers has come to be known. It embraces the States of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and the eastern side of Minnesota - a little more than a quarter million square miles of territory. The name has gained greater currency since the New Northwest, lying beyond the Mississippi River, has come into such great prominence. Save New England alone, there is no division of the United States embracing several States that is so distinct an historical unit, and that so readily yields to historical treatment. It was rst discovered and colonized by the French. It was the occasion of the nal struggle for dominion between France and England in North America. It was the theatre of one of the most brilliant military exploits of the Revolution. After the war, the Old Northwest assumed a constantly increasing prominence in the National history.
