Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this handbook is Teichmuller theory in a wide sense, namely the theory of geometric structures on surfaces and their moduli spaces. This includes the study of vector bundles on these moduli spaces, the study of mapping class groups, the relation with $3$-manifolds, the relation with symmetric spaces and arithmetic groups, the representation theory of fundamental groups, and applications to physics. Thus the handbook is a place where several fields of mathematics interact: Riemann surfaces, hyperbolic geometry, partial differential equations, several complex variables, algebraic geometry, algebraic topology, combinatorial topology, low-dimensional topology, theoretical physics, and others. This confluence of ideas toward a unique subject is a manifestation of the unity and harmony of mathematics. This volume contains surveys on the fundamental theory as well as surveys on applications to and relations with the fields mentioned above. It is written by leading experts in these fields. Some of the surveys contain classical material, while others present the latest developments of the theory as well as open problems. This volume is divided into the following four sections: The metric and the analytic theory The group theory The algebraic topology of mapping class groups and moduli spaces Teichmuller theory and mathematical physics This handbook is addressed to graduate students and researchers in all the fields mentioned.

It covers the basics of U-statistics and Mm-estimators and develops their asymptotic properties. It also provides an elementary introduction to resampling, particularly in the context of these estimators. The last chapter is on practical implementation of the methods presented in other chapters, using the free software R.

Book excerpt: This book deals with topics on the theory of measure and integration. It starts with discussion on the Riemann integral and points out certain shortcomings, which motivate the theory of measure and the Lebesgue integral. Most of the material in this book can be covered in a one-semester introductory course. An awareness of basic real analysis and elementary topological notions, with special emphasis on the topology of the n-dimensional Euclidean space, is the pre-requisite for this book. Each chapter is provided with a variety of exercises for the students. The book is targeted to students of graduate- and advanced-graduate-level courses on the theory of measure and integration.

Book excerpt: This book complements the authors’ monograph Cellular Automata and Groups [CAG] (Springer Monographs in Mathematics). It consists of more than 600 fully solved exercises in symbolic dynamics and geometric group theory with connections to geometry and topology, ring and module theory, automata theory and theoretical computer science. Each solution is detailed and entirely self-contained, in the sense that it only requires a standard undergraduate-level background in abstract algebra and general topology, together with results established in [CAG] and in previous exercises. It includes a wealth of gradually worked out examples and counterexamples presented here for the first time in textbook form. Additional comments provide some historical and bibliographical information, including an account of related recent developments and suggestions for further reading. The eight-chapter division from [CAG] is maintained. Each chapter begins with a summary of the main definitions and results contained in the corresponding chapter of [CAG]. The book is suitable either for classroom or individual use. Foreword by Rostislav I. Grigorchuk

Book excerpt: Representation theory, and more generally Lie theory, has played a very important role in many of the recent developments of mathematics and in the interaction of mathematics with physics. In August-September 1989, a workshop (Third Workshop on Representation Theory of Lie Groups and its Applications) was held in the environs of C6rdoba, Argentina to present expositions of important recent developments in the field that would be accessible to graduate students and researchers in related fields. This volume contains articles that are edited versions of the lectures (and short courses) given at the workshop. Within representation theory, one of the main open problems is to determine the unitary dual of a real reductive group. Although this prob lem is as yet unsolved, the recent work of Barbasch, Vogan, Arthur as well as others has shed new light on the structure of the problem. The article of D. Vogan presents an exposition of some aspects of this prob lem, emphasizing an extension of the orbit method of Kostant, Kirillov. Several examples are given that explain why the orbit method should be extended and how this extension should be implemented.

Each volume in the series shall be devoted to the mathematical analysis that has been applied or potentially applicable to the solutions of scientific, engineering, and social problems. For the past twenty five years, there has been an explosion of interest in the study of nonlinear dynamical systems. Mathematical techniques developed during this period have been applied to important nonlinear problems ranging from physics and chemistry to ecology and economics. All these developments have made dynamical systems theory an important and attractive branch of mathematics to scientists in many disciplines. This rich mathematical subject has been partially represented in this collection of 45 papers by some of the leading researchers in the area. This volume contains 45 state-of-art articles on the mathematical theory of dynamical systems by leading researchers. It is hoped that this collection will lead new direction in this field.Contributors: B Abraham-Shrauner, V Afraimovich, N U Ahmed, B Aulbach, E J Avila-Vales, F Battelli, J M Blazquez, L Block, T A Burton, R S Cantrell, C Y Chan, P Collet, R Cushman, M Denker, F N Diacu, Y H Ding, N S A El-Sharif, J E Fornaess, M Frankel, R Galeeva, A Galves, V Gershkovich, M Girardi, L Gotusso, J Graczyk, Y Hino, I Hoveijn, V Hutson, P B Kahn, J Kato, J Keesling, S Keras, V Kolmanovskii, N V Minh, V Mioc, K Mischaikow, M Misiurewicz, J W Mooney, M E Muldoon, S Murakami, M Muraskin, A D Myshkis, F Neuman, J C Newby, Y Nishiura, Z Nitecki, M Ohta, G Osipenko, N Ozalp, M Pollicott, Min Qu, Donal O-Regan, E Romanenko, V Roytburd, L Shaikhet, J Shidawara, N Sibony, W-H Steeb, C Stoica, G Swiatek, T Takaishi, N D Thai Son, R Triggiani, A E Tuma, E H Twizell, M Urbanski; T D Van, A Vanderbauwhede, A Veneziani, G Vickers, X Xiang, T Young, Y Zarmi.

Book excerpt: The concept of Hecke operators was so simple and natural that, soon after Hecke's work, scholars made the attempt to develop a Hecke theory for modular forms, such as Siegel modular forms. As this theory developed, the Hecke operators on spaces of modular forms in several variables were found to have arithmetic meaning. Specifically, the theory provided a framework for discovering certain multiplicative properties of the number of integer representations of quadratic forms by quadratic forms. Now that the theory has matured, the time is right for this detailed and systematic exposition of its fundamental methods and results. Features: The book starts with the basics and ends with the latest results, explaining the current status of the theory of Hecke operators on spaces of holomorphic modular forms of integer and half-integer weight congruence-subgroups of integral symplectic groups. Hecke operators are considered principally as an instrument for studying the multiplicative properties of the Fourier coefficients of modular forms. It is the authors' intent that Modular Forms and Hecke Operators help attract young researchers to this beautiful and mysterious realm of number theory.

Book excerpt: This book's aim is to make accessible techniques for studying Whitehead groups of finite groups, as well as a variety of related topics such as induction theory and p-adic logarithms. The author has included a lengthy introduction to set the scene for non-specialists who want an overview of the field, its history and its applications. The rest of the book consists of three parts: general theory, group rings of p-groups and general finite groups. The book will be welcomed by specialists in K- and L-theory and by algebraists in general as a state-of-the art survey of the area.
