Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the Newfoundland National Convention is of key importance for understanding how Newfoundland became a Canadian province in 1949. In 1946 forty-five convention delegates were elected to consider the condition and prospects of Newfoundland and Labrador, and make recommendations to the British government concerning the forms of government that should be put before the electorate in a referendum. The debates and committee reports were not published after the Convention's dissolution in 1948; they are now brought together in an accessible form for the first time.

Book Synopsis Newfoundland in the North Atlantic World, 1929-1949 by : Peter Neary
Download or read book Newfoundland in the North Atlantic World, 1929-1949 written by Peter Neary and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1988-12-01 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neary draws material from both public and private sources in the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, and Newfoundland. Following a brief summary of major developments in Newfoundland before 1929, he gives an account of the tumultuous events that led to the demise of responsible self-government and the establishment of a British-appointed Commission of Government in 1934. He details and evaluates the major policies of the commission during three distinct phases: the continuing hard times of the 1930s, the boom years of the Second World War, and the period of post-war adjustment. The reasons for constitutional change are examined and Neary explains clearly why Newfoundland became a province of Canada in 1949. Through a fine blending of domestic and international history, he reveals the intricate connections between events in Newfoundland and in the rest of the North Atlantic World, providing a balanced view which takes into account constitutional, political, economic, and social developments. He acknowledges the role of British, Canadian, and American policymakers in determining the course of events in Newfoundland and illuminates the role that Newfoundlanders themselves played at a critical time in their history.

Book Synopsis Sovereignty and Command in Canada–US Continental Air Defence, 1940–57 by : Richard Goette
Download or read book Sovereignty and Command in Canada–US Continental Air Defence, 1940–57 written by Richard Goette and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2018-07-09 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1940 Ogdensburg Agreement entrenched a formal defence relationship between Canada and the United States. But was Canadian sovereignty upheld? Drawing on untapped archival material, Sovereignty and Command in Canada–US Continental Air Defence, 1940–57 documents the close and sometimes fractious relationship between the two countries. Richard Goette challenges prevailing perceptions that Canada’s defence relationship with the United States eroded Canadian sovereignty. He argues instead that a functional military transition from an air defence system based on cooperation to one based on integrated and centralized command and control under NORAD allowed Canada to retain command of its forces and thus protect Canadian sovereignty. Goette combines historical narrative with conceptual analysis of sovereignty, command and control systems, military professionalism, and civil-military relations. In the process, he provides essential insights into the Royal Canadian Air Force’s paradigm shift away from its Royal Air Force roots toward closer ties with the United States Air Force and the role of the nation’s armed forces in safeguarding its sovereignty.

Book excerpt: Vice Admiral Sir Humphrey Thomas Walwyn (1879–1957) was the British-appointed governor of Newfoundland from 1936 to 1946 – a period of remarkable change that would culminate in Newfoundland’s union with Canada in 1949. Assembling records from the British national archives and the provincial archives in Newfoundland and Labrador, Out Here presents readers with Walwyn’s quarterly reports to the secretary of state for dominion affairs in London throughout his tenure as governor. Walwyn’s position offered him a unique vantage point on the political and economic situation in Newfoundland throughout this tumultuous period. His reports bear witness to profound change, chronicling the economic downturn experienced in the final years of the Great Depression, followed by the unprecedented prosperity sparked by the Second World War that set the stage for debates over governance and for significant constitutional advance. The detailed accounts of Walwyn’s daily life in Newfoundland feature rich descriptions of capital city, company town, and outport mores; they paint a picture of coastal life in the mid-twentieth century and introduce the wide array of characters the governor encountered. Throughout, the candid insider accounts of Governor Walwyn are augmented by expert historical context and illustrated with a generous selection of contemporary photographs. As a whole, Out Here stands as an invaluable primary-source record and an important trove of information on wartime experiences in Atlantic Canada.
