Rusul Baba also promised an award of 1,000 rupees to anyone who could prove that Jesus(as) was dead. Accepting this challenge, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad(as) of Qadian documented irrefutable arguments in this book, written primarily in classical Arabic, supported by clear testimony from the Holy Quran, Hadith, and eminent Muslim scholars and divines of the past that—like all other Prophets—Jesus(as) had died and would never return to this world. Rusul Baba, silenced by the rebuttal of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad(as), avoided any further confrontation through the remainder of his life, which ended in 1902 as a result of the plague.

In the 17th century, it was revived by Ren Descartes, and ever since has been a subject of dispute and much debate among philosophers. Descartes formulated it as follows: "Premise 1: That which we clearly understand to belong to the true and immutable nature, or essence, or form of something, can be truly asserted of that thing. "Premise 2: But once we have made a sufficiently careful investigation into what God is, we clearly and distinctly understand that existence belongs to his true and immutable nature. Conclusion: Hence we can now truly assert of God that he does exits" In this interesting history of the argument, philosopher Kevin J. Harrelson shows that the defense of the ontological argument is more consistent and persuasive than has frequently been supposed. In addition to correcting many common misunderstandings about the argument, the author highlights what appears to be an irremovable tension between the conclusion and the explanation of the proof. Both the common objections to the argument and its historical development in early modern philosophy are explained in light of this tension.

Book excerpt: Every version of the argument from evil requires a premise concerning God's motivation - about the actions that God is motivated to perform or the states of affairs that God is motivated to bring about. The typical source of this premise is a conviction that God is, obviously, morally perfect, where God's moral perfection consists in God's being motivated to act in accordance with the norms of morality by which both we and God are governed. The aim of God's Own Ethics is to challenge this understanding by giving arguments against this view of God as morally perfect and by offering an alternative account of what God's own ethics is like. According to this alternative account, God is in no way required to promote the well-being of sentient creatures, though God may rationally do so. Any norms of conduct that favor the promotion of creaturely well-being that govern God's conduct are norms that are contingently self-imposed by God. This revised understanding of divine ethics should lead us to revise sharply downward our assessment of the force of the argument from evil while leaving intact our conception of God as an absolutely perfect being, supremely worthy of worship.

The Promised Messiah(as) responded to this objection, first, by raising serious doubts about the authenticity of the Christian Gospels, and then went on to show how the Holy Quran is a unique and peerless book, how so many of its prophecies have been fulfilled, and how its blessings live on to this day. In this small book, the author also argues against the doctrines of Trinity and Atonement held by present-day Christians, and shows that these beliefs have nothing to do with the teachings of Jesus(as) himself. The second part of the book, or Epilogue, consists of a profound thesis on the meaning of true salvation. The Promised Messiah(as) describes salvation as "The abiding peace and happiness which man, by his very nature, hungers and thirsts for,and which is achieved through personal love and recognition of God, and through a perfect relationship with Him."
