Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geoffrey Godden's HANDBOOK is the standard pocket reference for amateur and professionals alike, an invaluable aid for anyone who needs an authoritative identification guide to British ceramics. Continuously in print for thirty years, it has now been thoroughly revised, updated and extended in the light of the latest research on the historic porcelain manufacturers and potters. The main section lists the principal firms arranged alphabetically, shows the marks used by that firm, and gives its address, working period and the dates when the mark was used. The aim is to provide all the pre-1900 marks that the dealer or collector is likely to come across. in addition, the book records over 700 combinations of initials known to have been used as identifying signs by the potters listed, with their working periods, and full details of over 900 Staffordshire potters. A new listing of pattern and shape registrations, from 1842 to 1883, has been added, together with guidance on further reading and on the collectability of the main types. 'An amazing achievement in clear compression. ' - Collectors Guide
Book Synopsis Ceramics and Globalization by : Neil Ewins
Download or read book Ceramics and Globalization written by Neil Ewins and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-04 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neil Ewins' study of the Staffordshire potteries in a period of great global change traces how ceramics production has been affected by globalisation in both familiar and unexpected ways. Although many manufacturers such as Wedgwood initially moved production to cheaper labour markets in East Asia, others remained in or returned to England once it became clear that outsourcing manufacturing was affecting the brand value and customer perception of their products. Neil Ewins explores the complex behaviour of the UK ceramics industry, using a combination of evidence from the press, trade journals, ceramic objects, and primary interview evidence of manufacturers, retailers and a ceramic designer. Ewins suggests that, although the surface designs of UK ceramics invariably reflect diverse cultural and stylistic influences, a notion of authenticity often still resides in the place and context in which the ceramic product was originally made. Overall, the book argues that UK ceramics remain culturally complex because of issues of supply and demand, and ties to heritage, imagined or otherwise. Within a context of globalization, the book highlights compelling issues which have huge ramifications on UK manufacturing futures.

Book Synopsis Fashion and Authorship by : Gerald Egan
Download or read book Fashion and Authorship written by Gerald Egan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-13 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of fashion and literature in recent decades have focused primarily on representations of clothing and dress within literary texts. But what about the author? How did he dress? What where her shopping practices and predilections? What were his alliances with modishness, stylishness, fashion? The essays in this book explore these and other questions as they look at authors from the eighteenth century through the postmodern and digital eras, cultural producers who were also men and women of fashion: Alexander Pope, Hester Thrale, Mary Robinson, Lord Byron, William Thackeray, Charlotte Bronte, Wilkie Collins, Margaret Oliphant, Virginia Woolf, Rebecca West, Trudi Kanter, Angela Carter, and Martin Margiela. The essays collected here ultimately converge upon a fundamental question: what happens to our notions of timeless literature when authorship itself is implicated in the transient and the temporary, the cycles and materials of fashion? “Gerald Egan’s provocative introduction to this exciting new book poses a bold question: How are authorship and literature – so often linked to ideas of transcendence – implicated in the transient trends and stuff of fashion? The thirteen chapters that follow track authorship’s complex implication in the discourses and materiality of fashion and fashionable goods from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries. Wide-ranging in discipline and chronology, yet forensically focused and carefully argued, this book makes a striking and wonderfully original contribution to studies of authorship, celebrity and material culture.” — Dr Jennie Batchelor, Professor of Eighteenth-Century Studies,University of Kent, UK
