Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Concept of Morals In morals finally we have the doctrine of ethical rela tivity.' It IS the same story over again. Morality ls doubtless human. It has not descended upon us out of the sky. It has grown out of human nature, and is relative to that nature. Nor could it have, apart from that nature, any meaning whatever. This we must, accept. But if this is interpreted to mean that whatever any social group thinks good is good (for that group), that there is no common standard, and that consequently any one moral code is as good as any other, then this relativism in effect denies the difference between good and evil altogether, and makes meaningless the idea of progress in moral con ceptions. The plan of the series involves not only the treatment of the physical and biological phases of the subject, but also its ethical, social, religious and philosophical aspects - the whole to be introduced by biographical sketches of the two great men of our own time whose names are most intimately associated with the Evolution hypothesis. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Ethics: Outlines of a Doctrine of Morals But, as the Professor himself says in his own prefatory note: Let the little book tell its own tale. It is not intended to edify or to proselytiee, but mainly only to teach and explain. Is that so entirely super uous 'i - is the contradiction altogether harmless which we so often find between what we have been taught from childhood about moral questions and duties, and what we practise in daily life, or see our neighbours practise t - these are questions that may well be asked. Possibly answers to both may be found in the following pages which may contribute to clear ness and truth on the subject. If so, the little work will have fulfilled its purpose.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Morals and the Evolution of Man The fact so often observed, that man in many cases does that which he passionately desires to leave undone, and refrains from doing that which all his instincts urge him to do - this phenomenon of Morality is a generalization upon a huge scale of the above experiment on animals with the pane of glass in a tank. Jean Jacques Rousseau thought out a theoretical human being who was by nature good. Such a human being does not exist and has never existed. From Sheer annoyance at the provoking obliquity of vision which led the enthusiast of Geneva to develop such a theory, one is sorely tempted to go to the opposite extreme and declare that man is by nature fundamentally bad; but such an assertion is just as naive as Rousseau's contention. Good and bad are values which we can only learn to appreciate when we have felt the effect of the phenomenon of Morality. The concepts of good and evil are of much later origin than mankind, and can therefore no more constitute a fundamental Characteristic of man's original nature than, for instance, the cut and colour of 1118 clothes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Morals a Treatise on the Psycho-Sociological Bases of Ethics In the near future it will, no doubt, be a matter of surprise that men were so pretentious as to teach morals, and to direct the most complex of all activities, without having made, as a preliminary, a sufficiently exhaustive study of man and of society. We shall be amazed at the subjectivity of moral conceptions, even while we remember that they were the work of the greatest minds of every age; at assertions based on incomplete and even in accurate notions of individual and social life; at precepts of value to the individual alone, enunciated by him for the purpose of justifying his manner of life, systematised after the event, when prejudices and preconceived ideas have had their natural effect on a mind which then offers itself, more or less unconsciously, as a model to its contemporaries and their descendants! Plato, with his aristocratic and Athenian tastes Aristotle, saturated with intellectualism - Descartes, oscillating between science and religion - Spinoza, a fatalist and mystic, - each in turn has described the moral ideal according to his own temperament and personal tendencies, and this they have done in almost complete self-absorption, as if assured that all other mortals were fashioned like unto them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Moral Life and Moral Worth The purpose of the following pages is to give a popular account of the nature of goodness in human life. They are not specially addressed to the philosophical student, but to the wider public interested in the subject: for moral philosophy is the quest of a few, but moralit is every man's affair. Nor is the book an essay in casuistry. Cases Of conduct are infinite in number, and hardly two of them are the same general rules fit them awkwardly. But morality is a spirit manifested in life, not a body of rules and this point of View is marked by the title The Moral Life. W. R. S. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation The following sheets were, as the note on the opposite page expresses, printed so long ago as the year 1780. The design, in pursuance of which they were written, was not so extensive as that announced by the present title. They had at that time no other destination than that of serving as an introduction to a plan of a penal code in terminis, designed to follow them, in the same volume. The body of the work had received its completion according to the then present extent of the author's views, when, in the investigation of some flaws he had discovered, he found himself unexpectedly entangled in an unsuspected corner of the meta physical maze. A suspension, at first not apprehended to be more than a temporary one, necessarily ensued: suspension brought on coolness, and coolness, aided by other concurrent causes, ripened into disgust. Imperfections pervading the whole mass had already been pointed out by the sincerity of severe and discerning friends; and conscience had certified the-justness of their censure. The inordinate length of some of the chapters, the apparent inutility of others, and the dry and metaphysical turn of the whole, suggested an apprehension, that, if published in its present form, the work would contend under great disadvantages for any chance, it might on other accounts possess, of being read, and consequently of being of use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of Men, Mind, and Morals The series of essays comprised in the present volume includes some pieces not before published, together with others that have already appeared in substance in periodical or journalistic form. These latter, however, have all been either rewritten in the main, or, where this seemed unnecessary, have at least been carefully revised and brought up to date. In the first chapter, which deals with the pro blem of Ethical Evolution, I have endeavoured once more to state succinctly and clearly what (apart from my own previous writings) I take to be an entirely new View of the development of the moral consciousness, and one which I hold will not prove unfruitful in results when worked out in detail. The second chapter treats of the application to history of certain philosophical principles arrived at in a previous work of mine, The Roots of Reality. Originally designed as the introduction to a volume on the Philosophy of History. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
