Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prentice-Hall Tax Service for 1919 This allowance is not based upon the difference between the actual war cost of such facilities and what they would have cost at pre-war prices. Obviously the taxpayer is not entitled to recover or extinguish through amortization more than the difference between the war cost of such property and what he can sell the property for after the war, or if he continues to need and use it in his business, what it would have cost him after the war. As the rule is expressed in Article 183 of the Regulations: The total amount to be extinguished by amortization, in general, is the excess of the unextinguished or unrecovered cost of the property over its maximum value (either for sale or for use as part of the plant or equipment of a going business) under stable post war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Overwintering of Honey Bee Colonies Strong colonies will usually consume considerably more honey over winter than weak colonies. However, such strong colonies will usually replace most of the honey used during the winter with new honey from willow, dandelion, fruit bloom, and other early blooming sources, under the same conditions that under-developed colonies continue to lose weight or show little or no gain. The strong colony that has a large population of young bees by mid-april not only shows a smaller net loss of reserve stores at the beginning of the surplus flow in june than a subnormal colony, but also is stronger and more capable of produc ing a large surplus crop. Jones: I do not pour it in at the entrance. I pour it down inside the hive at the back. W. Z. Hutchinson: You speak of using perforated zinc. I should like to know Something about that. Do the bees work through it freely? Is there any objection to its use, except its cost? And where is the expense? Is it in the material, or in the prepara tions'? D. A. Jones: It is in no way detrimental. The bees work through it freely. I see no objection to its use except its oust. And its cost is in the preparations. Tin would be no cheaper. For the reason that it comes in smaller sheets, and the waste would be greater. C. F. Muth: Mr. Jones sent me some perforated zinc. [thought there was more than I should ever sell. It was all sold long ago, and l have since then sold large quantities, and my customers are well pleased with it. They tell me that the queens never pass through it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gleanings in Bee Culture, Vol. 14: Devoted to Bees Honey and Home Interests; January 1, 1886 It will be seen that this plan is much the same as that given by E. M. Hayhurst, at the late meeting of the Western B. K. Association at Independence, Mo. The reason these precautions are needed is well stated by him (see gleanings, p. If the bees are disturbed before the queen begins to lay she will become frightened, running and piping, and the bees will chase and kill her. He says, Before she begins to lay. I had one balled this summer after she had been laying, because of the bees being disturbed by my search to see if she was all right. I have never failed with the plan I have given. J. T. Goddard. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bee-Keeping in North Carolina, Vol. 29: January, 1908 There is no State organization in which our bee-keepers meet to exchange views; there is no system of inspection by which the apiaries may be brought to a higher standard; the bee-keeping magazines have but a limited circulation with us, and there is nowhere in the State a practical bee-keeper whose special duty it is to encourage or protect this industry. In order to see if we could reach any of the fundamental facts underlying this industry in the State, the writer - though not an actual beekeeper - began an inquiry into the industry in the summer of 1905, which has been continued (with interruptions) to the pres ent time. A carefully prepared sheet of questions was sent out, and all data received in reply have been carefully recorded. We have left out of account any who have less than ten colonies of bees, so that the data which we have is from actual commercial bee-keepers. We have on record replies from about 360 persons, representing a total of colonies, located in seventy-eight counties - an average of 134 colonies for each county heard from, or an average of nearly 108 colonies for each and every county in the entire State. We feel that with such an amount of data we are warranted in deducting some conclusions regarding the industry in the State as a whole.
