Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Work of Rembrandt, Vol. 3: History, Description and Heliographic Reproduction of All the Master's Pictures, With a Study of His Life and His Art In the case of an artist so intensely subjective as Rembrandt, whose works reflect his inner life as in a mirror, it is not surprising that the personality of the young girl who had won his heart, and with whom he spent the happy years that preceded her all too early death, should have played an important part in his artistic production. From his first acquaintance with her until her death, and for some time after it, a period of over ten years, we recognise her, not only in portraits, but in compositions, in studies, in pictures, drawings and etchings. At an earlier stage of this work, when enumerating the series of pictures painted shortly before and simultaneously with Saskia's first appearance in Rembrandt's work, from another youthful female sitter, Rembrandt's sister Lysbeth, as I endeavoured to prove her, I found it necessary to mention the earliest portraits of Saskia, and to describe the appearance of the two young women, in order to differentiate their portraits. It will be enough, therefore, to refer my readers now to these passages in vol. I (chap. II). About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rembrandt's drawings display his emotional state with a candor unseen in other works. They function as a repository for his unfiltered feelings and perspectives of the world that surrounded him. Be it through haunting sketches of his first wife in the grips of a fatal case of tuberculosis, simple scenes of street life, or studies of elephants and tigers, Rembrandt communicates his feverish thirst for images, and his ability to represent these through the lens of his immediate emotional state. Commemorating the 350th anniversary of the artist's death and published in tandem with an exhibition at the Rijksmuseum of unprecedented scale, this stunning XXL monograph is the complete collection of Rembrandt's works on paper. Through the 700 drawings, brilliantly printed in color for the first time, and 313 etchings in pristine reproduction, we explore Rembrandt's keen eye, deft hand, and boundless depth of feeling like never before; and above all, we witness that he was far more than just a painter.

Book excerpt: For Rembrandt, as for Shakespeare, all the world was indeed a stage, and he knew in exhaustive detail the tactics of its performance: the strutting and mincing, the wardrobe and face-paint, the full repertoire and gesture and gimace, the flutter of hands and the roll of the eyes, the belly-laugh and the half-stifled sob. He knew what it looked like to seduce, to intimidate, to wheedle and to console; to strike a pose or preach a sermon, to shake a fist or uncover a breast; and how to sin and how to atone. No artist had ever been so fascinated by the fashioning of personae, beginning with his own. No painter ever looked with such unsparing intelligence or such bottomless compassion at our entrances and our exits and the whole rowdy show in between.

Book excerpt: “Seymour Slive, who should be considered the dean of scholars of 17th-century Dutch art, brings a lifetime of study and erudition to Rembrandt Drawings. . . . You would have to go a long way to find a better guide than Mr. Slive.”—Wall Street Journal Written by renowned Rembrandt scholar Seymour Slive, this gorgeous volume explores the artist’s extraordinary achievements as a draftsman by examining more than 150 of his drawings. Reproduced in color, these works are accompanied by etchings and paintings by Rembrandt and others, including Leonardo and Raphael. Unlike other publications of Rembrandt’s drawings, here they are arranged thematically, which makes his genius abundantly clear. Individual chapters focus on self-portraits, portraits of family members and friends, the lives of women and children, nudes, copies, model and study sheets, animals, landscapes and buildings, religious and mythological subjects, historical subjects, and genre scenes. Slive discusses possible doubtful attributions, which account for the considerable reduction from earlier times in the number of drawings now ascribed to the master.

Book excerpt: Painted between the years 1632 and 1646, the Passion series is one of Rembrandt's finest accomplishments. This volume investigates a work known as the Entombment Sketch. Drawing from paint samples, new high-definition imagery, and other technical findings, this volume thoroughly explores the provenance of the painting. The authors also discuss Rembrandt's own influences in creating the Passion series, including Leonardo, Caravaggio, Raphael, and Rubens, and compare the work with that of Rembrandt's contemporaries.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Work of Rembrandt, Vol. 7: History, Description and Heliographic Reproduction of All the Master's Pictures, With a Study of His Life and His Art The costume is Very broadly sketched in with the most consummate mastery; the head, very carefully elaborated, recalls Vandyck in its distinction of pose; the dog, a white and tan King Charles is excellently characterised with a few fat touches. It is only the hands and arms that affect one ilisagreeably, by reason of the haste and indifference with which they are dashed in, and their leathery colom'. Ft is obvious that here we have merely the priming. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
