Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Shot Beginning would involve the necessity of giving that and other puerile information. Nobody would be the better for a learned chapter on gun actions. In the first place, these actions are no longer patents, they are open to anyone who likes to use them, and consequently the days when one selected a gun-maker because his patent action was conceived to be the better, are long gone by. The reason is that each gun-maker can be trusted to use the best principle when he has a choice of them all, or at least the best available for the money to be expended upon its making in the gun. Ejectors are nearly in the same position but single triggers are not. I was so fortunate as to make a discovery in regard to single triggers that is now acknowledged to be of great assistance to the gun trade; the want of it had for a hundred years been the stumbling-block to the patent single triggers that had begun to trouble gun-makers in the time of the celebrated Colonel Thornton. That is referred to in its proper chapter, because single triggers now Occupy the place that formerly actions held, and at a later date ejector systems usurped, in assisting to the selection of a gun maker. But there is a great deal more to golf than any mere mechanism of form. There is also a wonderful psychol ogy, an elastic humour, the thrill of many mighty matches and miraculous shots that add greatly to its lure. Book excerpt: Just in time for Father's Day and a new golf season, Classic Shots showcases the best 250 photographs of the sport from the 1920s to the present day, culled from the USGA's archive of more than half a million images. While some of these photos have appeared in print over the years, many have never been published before. Among the many highlights are a single image showing the great Bob Jones' swing sequence... Payne Stewart's 1999 U.S. Open-winning putt at Pinehurst Country Club... Arnold Palmer's 1960 win at Cherry Hill... dramatic shots of Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Michelle Wie, and other golf superstars. The photographs are organized into five geographic regions: Northeast, South, Mid-Continent, West, and International. Accompanying essays introduce each region, examining particular images and telling the stories behind them. An essay by New York Times columnist and best-selling author Thomas L. Friedman underscores the unique qualities of the game of golf and its enduring impact upon its players and fans. From memorable moments of the game to casual portraits of legendary players, from striking landscapes of world-renowned courses to fascinating artifacts and memorabilia, Classic Shots is a unique visual treasure that will delight and inspire golfers of all ages.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Rifle Many books have been written about arms and about rifles, yet so rapidly does invention move, that the subject is never exhausted. The events of the last two years have aroused a new interest in the rifle; soldiers, volunteers, civilians, all are alike keenly alive to its importance. At last we have begun to understand that the man, armed with a rifle, who is not expert in its use, is a mere mili tary fraud, and that, if he is to acquire skill, the only prescription is - a delightful pas time. I desire to acknowledge gratefully the ungrudging help of the many friends who have aided or advised me on points connected with this book. Were I to thank them separately, my preface would resemble a long bidding prayer. I would also record my warm sense of much goodwill and pleasant companionship during more than twenty-one years of rifle work, helped especially by patient and ungrudging kindness from shooting men of an older generation. There can be no finality in the evolution of firearms, at least until some quite new power of destruction shall make them obsolete. The present work, imperfect as it is, may serve to record the point which the rifle has attained at the opening of the twentieth century.
