I am naturally anxious that what I have written should circulate as I wrote it, if it circulate at all. In defence of my own taste, nevertheless, it is incum bent upon me to say that I think nothing in this volume of much value to the public, or very credit able to myself. Events'not to be controlled have prevented me from making, at any time, any serious effort in what, under happier circumstances, would have been the field of my choice. With me poetry has been not a purpose, but a passion, and the passions should be held in reverence: they must not -they cannot at will be excited, with an eye to the paltry compensations, or the more paltry commenda. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Edgar Allan Poe: With Original Memoir The poems which follow are the work of a poet who thought persistently about poetry as an art, and would have reduced inspiration to a method. At their best they are perfectly denned by Baudelaire, when he says of Poe's poetry that it is a thing 'deep and shimmering as dreams, mysterious and perfect as crystal.' Not all the poems, few as they are, are flawless; they are so few that all have been reprinted here except the two narrative poems and the fragment of a dramatic poem, 'Tamerlane, ' 'Al Aaraaf, ' and 'Scenes from "Politian,"' In these few unequal poems we have the only essential poetry which has yet come from America, Walt Whitman's vast poetical nature having remained a nature only, come to be an art. Because Poe was fantastically inhuman, a conscious artist doing strange things with strange materials, not every one has realised how fine, how rare, was that beauty which this artist brought into the world. It is true that there was in the genius of Poe something meretricious; it is the flaw in his genius; but then he had genius, and Whittier and Bryant and Longfellow and Lowell had only varying degrees of talent. Let us admit, by all means, that a diamond is flawed; but need we compare it with this and that fine specimen of quartz? Book excerpt: In placing before the public this collection of Edgar Poe's poetical works, it is requisite to point out in what respects it differs from, and is superior to, the numerous collections which have preceded it. Until recently, all editions, whether American or English, of Poe's poems have been verbatim reprints of the first posthumous collection, published at New York in 1850.In 1874 I began drawing attention to the fact that unknown and unreprinted poetry by Edgar Poe was in existence. Most, if not all, of the specimens issued in my articles have since been reprinted by different editors and publishers, but the present is the first occasion on which all the pieces referred to have been garnered into one sheaf. Besides the poems thus alluded to, this volume will be found to contain many additional pieces and extra stanzas, nowhere else published or included in Poe's works. Such verses have been gathered from printed or manuscript sources during a research extending over many years. In addition to the new poetical matter included in this volume, attention should, also, be solicited on behalf of the notes, which will be found to contain much matter, interesting both from biographical and bibliographical points of view. John H. Ingram.

Although best known for his short stories, Edgar Allan Poe was by nature and choice a poet. From his exquisite lyric “To Helen,” to his immortal masterpieces, “Annabel Lee,” “The Bells,” and “The Raven,” Poe stands beside the celebrated English romantic poets Shelley, Byron, and Keats, and his haunting, sensuous poetic vision profoundly influenced the Victorian giants Swinburne, Tennyson, and Rossetti. Today his dark side speaks eloquently to contemporary readers in poems such as “The Haunted Palace” and “The Conqueror Worm,” with their powerful images of madness and the macabre. But even at the end of his life, Poe reached out to his art for comfort and courage, giving us in “Eldorado” a talisman to hold during our darkest moments—a timeless gift from a great American writer. Includes an Introduction by Jay Parini and an Afterword by April Bernard

Book excerpt: Differentiated book* It has a historical context with research of the time-Edgar Allan Poe (Boston, United States, January 19, 1809-Baltimore, United States, October 7, 1849) was an American writer, poet, critic, and journalist, generally recognized as one of the universal masters of the short story , of which he was one of the first practitioners in his country. He was a renovator of the Gothic novel, especially remembered for his horror stories. Considered the inventor of the detective story, he also contributed several works to the emerging genre of science fiction. On the other hand, he was the first renowned American writer to try to make writing his modus vivendi, which had unfortunate consequences for him. He was baptized Edgar Poe in Boston, Massachusetts, and his parents died as a child. It was picked up by a wealthy married couple from Richmond, Virginia, Frances and John Allan, although it was never officially adopted. He spent an academic year at the University of Virginia and later joined the army, also for a short time. His relations with the Allan were severed at that time, due to the continuous disagreements with his stepfather, who often ignored his requests for help and ended up disinheriting him. His literary career began with a book of poems, Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827). For financial reasons, he soon turned his efforts to prose.
