Book excerpt: In order, then, to attach ourselves to this great means of salvation, we must first of all consider how necessary it is to us, and how powerful it is to obtain for us all the graces that we can desire from God, if we know how to ask for them as we ought. Hence, in the first part, we will speak first of the necessity and power of prayer; and next, of the conditions necessary to make it efficacious with God. Then, in the second part, we will show that the grace of prayer is given to all; and there we will treat of the manner in which grace ordinarily operates. Aeterna Press

Download or read book Preparation for Death written by Alphonsus Liguori and published by . This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual of devotion consists of a series of chapters or instructions upon important points of Christian teaching which Saint Alphonsus calls "Considerations". As the Saint describes, "These Considerations are written for the purpose of pricking or of wounding the conscience... that so it may be thoroughly aroused and awakened." The Considerations deal with such doctrines and facts as have a universal application, which admit of no dispute, and which are always confirmed by some passage from Holy Scripture. Preparation for Death is essentially a guide to prayer. It represents, from its beginning to its end, the continual outpouring of heart before God, an outpouring that is at times expressed in the very same words which imply a new phase of thought. Regarded as a Manual of Mental Prayer, each of these "Considerations" has a technical and special signification. They treat of life and death, the value of time, the mercy of God, the habit of sin, the general and particular judgments, the love of God, Holy Communion, and other subjects equally important.

Book Synopsis The Divine Office: Explanation of the Psalms and Canticles by : Saint Alphonsus de Liguori
Download or read book The Divine Office: Explanation of the Psalms and Canticles written by Saint Alphonsus de Liguori and published by Aeterna Press. This book was released on with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This difficult work, composed at so advanced an age, amidst sufferings almost continual, and numerous occupations, excited at Naples the admiration of learned men. According to Canon Massa, professor of theology and ecclesiastical examiner, the author in his work explains so skilfully the sense and the obscure passages of the psalms, that without taking anything from the purity of the inspired word he aids both the heart and the mind of those that read it. The Holy See has frequently praised and recommended all the works of St. Alphonsus; but the decree of March 23, 1871, which conferred on St. Alphonsus the title of Doctor of the Church, makes special mention of this work, speaking of it as one of his most useful and salutary works. The decree says: “He [St. Alphonsus] has made clear dark passages of the Holy Scriptures, both in his ascetic writings, which are freighted with a celestial odor, and in a most salutary commentary, in which, for the nourishment of piety and the instruction of the soul, he has given expositions of the Psalms, as well as of the Canticles, for the benefit especially of those obliged to its recitation.” Aeterna Press

Book Synopsis The Spiritual Life by : Reverend Adolphe Tanquerey
Download or read book The Spiritual Life written by Reverend Adolphe Tanquerey and published by Catholic Way Publishing. This book was released on with total page 881 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE SPIRITUAL LIFE: A TREATISE ON ASCETICAL AND MYSTICAL THEOLOGY REVEREND ADOLPHE TANQUEREY — A Catholic Classic! — Two Parts of Four Books in One — Includes 1,773 Active Linked Footnotes — Includes Active Linked Headings, Index and Table of Contents — Includes Religious Illustrations Publisher: Available in Paperbacks: FIRST PART: ISBN-13: 978-1-78379-507-9 SECOND PART: ISBN-13: 978-1-78379-508-6 It is the writer’s conviction that Dogma is the foundation of Ascetical Theology and that an exposition of what God has done and still does for us is the most efficacious motive of true devotion. Hence, care has been taken to recall briefly the truths of faith on which the spiritual life rests. This treatise then is first of all doctrinal in character and aims at bringing out the fact that Christian perfection is the logical outcome of dogma, especially of the central dogma of the Incarnation. The work however is also practical, for a vivid realization of the truths of faith is the strongest incentive to earnest and steady efforts towards the correction of faults and the practice of virtues. Consequently in the first part of this treatise the practical conclusions that naturally flow from revealed truths and the general means of perfection are developed. The second part contains a more detailed exposition of the special means of advancing along the Three Ways towards the heights of perfection. Contents: FIRST PART: Principles SECOND PART: The Three Ways BOOK I: The Purification of the Soul or the Purgative Way BOOK II: The Illuminative Way BOOK III: The Unitive Way PUBLISHER: CATHOLIC WAY PUBLISHING
Book Synopsis Moral Theology Volume II by : Alphonsus Liguori
Download or read book Moral Theology Volume II written by Alphonsus Liguori and published by . This book was released on 2018-04-07 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Alphonsus Liguori's Moral Theology has long been praised and held in the highest regard by the Church, covering every moral question of his day. This first ever English translation features book 4 of the Theologia Moralis, on The First through Sixth Commandments. These will cover topics as broad as the sin of divination, worshiping demons, blasphemy, oaths, vows, and when they are binding; when you must go to Mass and abstain from work, as well as considerations on the fourth commandment in regard to obedience, the fifth in terms of murder, just war and abortion, and in the 6th, adultery and the various sins against chastity. The famous theologian Reginald Garrigou Lagrange, O.P. declared: "[The Casuistic method] was inefficacious in urging men to lead good lives, [and] tends to laxism. ... But during this period there appeared a man, sent by God, to remedy the evils of casuistry. This man was St. Alphonsus Liguori, doctor of the Church, founder of the Redemptorists, renowned author of many works, ascetic and moral, highly praised by various popes. He is rather practical than speculative. As founder of aequiprobabilism, he cleansed casuistry from the defects of probabilism and laxism." Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange Beatitude, c. II, p. 13. "One of St. Alphonsus' names is Doctor Moralis, the moral doctor. This name is deserved for three reasons: 1) his work Theologia Moralis, translated into English here for the first time, as well as various other works, treated moral theology with a thoroughness like no other work of a prior saint. 2) St. Alphonsus was a true scholar by mastering virtually all contributors in the field of moral theology up to his own time. Like St. Thomas who was known for his synthesis of theology in general, St. Alphonsus is clearly a master of synthesizing the various moral authors throughout time. ... 3) He addressed moral problems that had not been addressed by St. Thomas himself or other authors. ... St. Alphonsus provides a thoroughness to moral theology which is very much needed today, in which approaches are often not based upon reality, the natural law, or sound reasoning." Fr. Chad Ripperger, PhD Mediatrix Press is pleased to bring you the first English Translation of this excellent work, once widely read but relegated to obscurity on account of the loss of Latin fluency in Western Society. Volume 1 embraces the first three Books of Alphonsus' Moral Theology.
Book Synopsis Guide for Confessors by : Alphonsus Liguori
Download or read book Guide for Confessors written by Alphonsus Liguori and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This rich classic passed out of common usage years ago, but here we find it restored for the first time to the benefit of the English reader. St. Alphonsus transformed the landscape of the experience of this Reconciliation, and our confessional experience would be unthinkable without his saintly, intellectual, and pastoral prowess. While the cultural and historical context is amazingly fascinating, it necessitates peeling back those layers to see the glimmering treasure within. For that reason, this edition provides an introductory essay that steps lightly to take note of these difference for a fruitful reception of the saint's genius. May all readers benefit for the greater glory of God.

Download or read book Moral Theology written by Saint Alfonso Maria de' Liguori and published by . This book was released on 2017-03-30 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Alphonsus Liguori's Moral Theology has long been praised and held in the highest regard by the Church, covering every moral question of his day. This first ever English translation features books 1-3 of the Theologia Moralis, on Conscience, Law, Sin and the Theological Virtues. Additionally, it contains several treatises on the saint on the use of equally probable opinion, the papacy, and more. St. Alphonsus comes highly recommended by the Catholic tradition Bl. Pope Pius IX declared: "It happened, not without the most provident counsel of God almighty, that since the doctrine of the Jansenist innovators turned all eyes to themselves, enticing many to the sight of their error and leading them over to it, it was then that Alphonsus Maria Liguori stood up, the founder of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer and the Bishop of St. Agatha of the Goths, who, 'fighting the good fight, opened his mouth in the midst of the Church'; and by his learned writings and labors eradicated this plague, roused from hell, and saw to it tear it out and so exterminate it from the field of the Lord. Not only did Alphonsus appoint these shares for himself, but focusing his mind on the glory of God and the spiritual salvation of men he wrote many books, related with holy erudition and piety, whose opinions were between those embraced by both more lax and rigid theologians, to fortify the safe path by which the confessors of Christ's faithful could advance without dashing their foot upon a stone; whether to train and establish the clergy, or to confirm the truth of the Catholic faith and to defend against the heretics of every kind or name; or to assert the laws of this Apostolic See; or to rouse the souls of the faithful to piety." [Apostolic Letter Honoring St. Alphonsus with the title of Doctor of the Church] The famous theologian Reginald Garrigou Lagrange, O.P. declared: "[The Casuistic method] was inefficacious in urging men to lead good lives, [and] tends to laxism. ...
