Book excerpt: This book is the autobiography of one of the old style 'general' surgeons - those who could still cope with every sort of surgical work without needing to refer it to a specialist - the Compleat Surgeon of its title. Born in 1889, he started by getting first class honours at Cambridge in each of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, whilst also taking his first and second MBs over a period of only four years before going to St. Thomas's Hospital in London in 1913. There he went into Casualty before going out onto 'The District' (Lambeth) to qualify as a House Surgeon /Casualty Officer. Completion of this part of his training coincided with the outbreak of World War 1. Taken into the RAMC, he was sent to work on a hospital ship for Indian soldiers, at a casualty clearing station in France and in a hospital in Aldershot. In the midst of all that he married the Irish nurse whom he had met at Addenbrookes Hospital and to whom he had got engaged whilst at Cambridge During the war, those senior surgeons at St. Thomas's who passed the pre-war age limit of 60 were retained, but when the war ended, they all retired, leaving a fair number of posts to be filled. He was appointed to be an Honorary Surgeon. Honorary indeed, as with it came only a nominal salary. To survive he needed to set up for private practice and to take on work from more senior surgeons, work that might be less skilled, but was essential to back up their practices as well as covering for them during weekends and holidays. He was very successful and soon built up a private practice of his own with a house in Harley Street. He describes the wide variety of the cases given to him, and those who came to him in his own practice. From 1927 to 1960, he and another surgeon at St. Thomas's, Peter H Mitchiner, wrote, and revised annually, a worldwide recognised book on surgery. Separate chapters describe his work in St.Thomas's and other hospitals and in private practice and for various aspects of his work like night calls, the Metropolitan Police, the General Strike, the start of World War 2, nursing homes, the theatre, and Doctors, Doctors' children, and women as patients, and hobbies like railways and racing at Brooklands. Before he reached 65, the retirement age for NHS hospital surgeons, he read and passed all his law exams, and became Chairman of his local Bench.

Download or read book The Vagabond written by George Walker and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2004-09-14 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1799, George Walker’s The Vagabond was an immediate popular success. Offering a vitriolic critique of post-Bastille Jacobinism and sansculotte-style mob rule, its true-to-life satirical portraits of many of the radical men and women who fought in the forefront of the "British Revolution" are nonetheless full of playful banter and farce. With swipes at Hume, Rousseau, Godwin, Wollstonecraft, and Paine; the French Revolution; and the ideas of the noble savage, natural virtue, liberty, equality, and romantic primitivism, The Vagabond offers a unique cross-section of 1790s radicalism. This Broadview edition contains a critical introduction and a wide selection of primary source materials that situate the novel in the context of the revolutionary debate of the 1790s. Appendices include contemporary reviews of the novel and excerpts from the writings of a variety of radicals and reactionaries engaged in the debate, such as Hume, Rousseau, Paine, Thelwall, Wollstonecraft, Godwin, Burke, Playfair, Malthus, and Cobbett, among many others.

Book Synopsis The Laparoscopic Surgery Revolution by : David W. Page MD
Download or read book The Laparoscopic Surgery Revolution written by David W. Page MD and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-02-13 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a surgeon with 40 years' experience in practice and instruction, this book provides vital, up-to-date information that explains the strengths and weaknesses of the laparoscopic surgery field to enable potential surgical patients to make the best decisions and choose a surgeon wisely. More than 30 years ago, laparoscopic or "keyhole" surgery suddenly appeared as an operative technique. Laparoscopy quickly grew in the U.S. surgical field, where now more than two million operations annually use the technique. But is the training surgeons receive in laparoscopy sufficient to ensure patient safety? What are the specific situations where laparoscopy is beneficial and justified, and when is it ill-advised due to the additional complexity and risk factors? This is the first book written for general readers—avoiding medical jargon wherever possible—to expose the gritty history and downsides of "minimally invasive surgery." Additionally, it provides the perspective and insights of an esteemed surgeon who was working at the inception of laparoscopy and has a full understanding of this now widely popular procedure across its development and lifespan. Readers will learn about the emergence of laparoscopic techniques in the 1990s, understand how minimally invasive surgery has been a boon to the business of surgery and to patient health and recovery overall, appreciate how the complexity involved in laparoscopic surgery has led to a higher incidence of surgeon "incompetence," and grasp the responsibility of a patient to take steps to assure that the surgeon is qualified before going into the operating room. Examination of eye-opening statistics on the outcomes of laparoscopic procedures documents the high level of capability of most surgeons, as well as the lack of appropriate ability with certain laparoscopic operations in the hands of some surgeons. The author also spells out how informed patients can be prepared to discuss and consider all aspects of an operation—and the surgeon's training and experience—to assure the best outcome for their health.
