Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "The short-term toxicity of copper in Sydney tap water varies 510-fold with 4-day LC50s from 21000 ug Cu/L down to 41 ug Cu/L. Three kinds of experiments were used to estimate the no-observed-effect concentration (NOEC) and the lowest-observed-effect concentratioon (LOEC) of copper. The experiments were toxicity tests for several life stages of each test species, pre-exposure to sublethal concentrations and reproduction studies. Inhibition of reproduction and toxicity with newly hatched fry were the most sensitive tests investigated. The provisional NOEC and LOEC of copper to the snail Physastra gibbosa were 12 and 16 ug Cu/L respectively, to the checkered rainbowfish Melanotaenia splendida inornata 12 and 18 ug Cu/L, and to the yabby Cherax destructor within the range 12 to 60 ug Cu/L." -- p. 1.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Papers presented by noted researchers consider the occurrence, flux, compartmentalization, and residence times of four elements recognized as significant environmental pollutants. Examines data available on these pollutants and pinpoints areas in which further research is needed. The presence of these elements in all ecological environments--oceans, freshwater systems, soils, the atmosphere, etc.--and their regional occurrence around the globe are examined in detail, as are their sources and effects on plants, animals, and humans. Particular attention is paid to lead, which is the most prevalent pollutant and poses the greatest risk to human health, especially the health of children.

Discusses the sources, distribution, and fate of cadmium in aquatic ecosystems, including coverage of the biocycling and exotoxicity of cadmium to materia and fresh water biota. A succinct review of the analytical chemistry of cadmium in natural waters is also included. The contributors emphasize general principles rather than comprehensive documentation, making this volume accessible to a wide audience. The technical information helps provide the scientific rationale needed in the continuing effort to establish water quality criteria and standards for cadmium.
