Book Synopsis Town Planning in Practice by : Raymond Unwin
Download or read book Town Planning in Practice written by Raymond Unwin and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1909, Raymond Unwin's Town Planning in Practice: An Introduction to the Art of Designing Cities and Suburbs is an extraordinary compendium of images and theories on urban design. As a member of the generation of planners following Camillo Sitte and preceding the emergence of the modern planners of the 1920s, Unwin considered planning a design-based discipline rather than a purely technical one. He believed that artistic and practical criteria were mutually supportive and carried this out in his work by creating plans that represented a unity of art, science, and technology. Unwin is perhaps the greatest figure of the Garden City movement, which has had a tremendous impact on planning in both Europe and the United States. Although Town Planning has become the bible of neo-traditionalist planners, this book is not a nostalgic view of past planning ideas; rather, it is a useful, forward-looking book that holds valuable lessons for today's planners. Its insightful critical analyses of many towns throughout Europe and the United States are accompanied by photographs, plans, drawings, and six foldout maps. This reprint of Town Planning in Practice includes a new preface by Andres Duany and an introduction by Walter Creese.

Book Synopsis Constitutional Modernism by : Timothy Hyde
Download or read book Constitutional Modernism written by Timothy Hyde and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does architecture make its appearance in civil society? Constitutional Modernism pursues this challenging question by exploring architecture, planning, and law as cultural forces. Analyzing the complex entanglements between these disciplines in the Cuban Republic, Timothy Hyde reveals how architects joined with other professionals and intellectuals in efforts to establish a stable civil society, from the promulgation of a new Cuban Constitution in 1940 up until the Cuban Revolution. By arguing that constitutionalism was elaborated through architectural principles and practices as well as legal ones, Hyde offers a new view of architectural modernism as a political and social instrument. He contends that constitutionalism produced a decisive confluence of law and architecture, a means for planning the future of Cuba. The importance of architecture in this process is laid bare by Hyde's thorough scrutiny of a variety of textual, graphical, and physical artifacts. He examines constitutional articles, exhibitions, interviews, master plans, monuments, and other primary materials as acts of design. Read from the perspective of architectural history, Constitutional Modernism demonstrates how the modernist concepts that developed as an international discourse before the Second World War evolved through interactions with other disciplines into a civil urbanism in Cuba. And read from the perspective of Cuban history, the book explains how not only material products such as buildings and monuments but also the immaterial methods of architecture as a cultural practice produced ideas that had consequential effects on the political circumstances of the nation.

Book excerpt: 'Place', a sense of place of unique human attachment is the bedrock of the architectural approach by this Practice. The configuration of space and form, functional relationships of materials [and use] and defining, articulating and celebrating the design of a place represents MRY's methodology. There is a sense that their architecture is at the service of larger ideas about living, which is expressed in the process of place-making. This response to contemporary life, the influence of Charles Moore, the emphasis on shared architectural values - and much else besides - all form the focus of these pages. The range of recent, functionally varied projects from all over the world demonstrates how MRY's value system can be adapted and made suitable for almost every client and every project. Under the headings of Residential, Civic, Campus and Community and Masterplanning and Housing a selection of projects capture the essence of the themes pursued by this Practice over the past 30 years. The Grangegorman Masterplan, Dublin Institute of Technology is just one such expression of MRY's philosophy.Contents include: studio profile, selected bibliography, selected awards and exhibitions, project chronology and project credits
