Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common School Spelling Book American school children, from the descendants of the early colonists to the little immigrants of today, come from many races. These races do not attach the same sounds to the letters of the English alphabet. But if American chil dren may see in the pages of their first spelling book the usual combinations of English sounds in words, if they are made to feel the strength and beauty and natural growth of these words, they will develop instinctively a kind of language patriotism. They will come to know that the languages of their parents are represented just as truly in the structure of the English language as their races are rep resented in the American people. These different race-elements in our language have brought with them their conflicting systems of spelling. Nevertheless, in spite of this conflict, the majority of Eng lish words are fairly regular in spelling; that is, they are spelled according to rational principles. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Common-Word Spellers: A Two-Book Course in Spelling for the Common Schools Book Two of the Common-Word Spellers continues the plan of work begun in Book One. It emphasizes the spelling of common words, separately treats phonetic and unphonetic words, consistently reviews difficult words previously taught, and stresses the hard spots in words. It also continues written dictation, standard tests, and exercises in syllabication. One outstanding new feature of Book Two is the dictionary lessons presented in a novel and practical way. Pupils are taught how to use guide words and key words, and how to interpret diacritical marks and marks of accent. Word studies including the significance of prefixes and suffixes, of plural forms, and the formation of compounds are given a prominent place. Derivatives comprise so large a percentage of our common words that word-building exercises are very properly emphasized. Adequate attention is also given to correct pronunciation and to practice in written spelling. Another feature receiving attention is the planned lessons for teaching spelling in the pupils' original composition. After all, this is the real test of one's ability to spell. Put to this test many of our prize winners in spelling classes display weakness. When correct spelling functions subconsciously as a person writes, he spells well.
