Book excerpt: The evaluation of EU marketing standards for fishery and aquaculture products in the Common Market Organisation (CMO) regulation (1379/2013) and three specific regulations for fresh and chilled fishery products (2406/96), preserved tuna and bonito (1536/92) and preserved sardines and sardine-like products (2136/89) explored their continued relevance, effectiveness, efficiency, coherence and EU added value. EU Marketing Standards aim to provide clear definitions of quality requirements at EU level. They should contribute to the objectives defined in the CMO, i.e. enable the market to be supplied with sustainable products, facilitate the movement of goods within the internal market to realise its full potential, improve the profitability of production and ensure a level playing field in the EU market. Data analysis was supported by extensive consultation through a National Authorities survey; interviews with Professional Organisations; case studies in Croatia, Denmark, France, Netherlands, Italy, Spain; and a Public Consultation (PC).

Book excerpt: Under the new common organisation of the markets (CMO) in fishery and aquaculture products (FAPs), consumers play a pivotal role: not only they should be enabled to make informed choices, but a more "sustainable consumption" is also to be pursued. In the same vein, the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) also envisages among its priorities to foster marketing and processing, supporting and funding initiatives aimed at improving the conditions for the placing of fishery and aquaculture products (FAPs) on the market and at promoting the overall quality of the products marketed. On the other hand, targeted policies need a preliminary understanding of the sector in which they are called to operate, and specifically as regards the preferences and purchasing behaviour of consumers in the EU. Information available across different countries is scattered and fragmented, and not all EU Member States have a tradition of monitoring the market for FAPs. Based on these needs, and in order to support the appropriate implementation of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and the CMO, the European Commission - DG MARE launched a study aimed at surveying and analysing EU consumer attitudes and habits regarding FAPs. This Study was launched within the European Market Observatory for Fisheries and Aquaculture products (EUMOFA, www.eumofa.eu), and has been integrated with findings of the Eurobarometer survey on EU consumer habits regarding FAPs run in June 2016 in all EU Member States.

Book excerpt: This study has been carried out to help the European Commission services (DG MARE) getting a broader understanding of the values that consumers attach to the concept of origin, their level of comprehension, the risks of misunderstanding with the current regulatory regime, and the consumers' preferences when it comes to the type of origin-related information attached to Fishery and Aquaculture Products (FAPs). The study's objectives were to: - Shed light on what values EU consumers associate with origin and why; assess what kind of origin-related information would provide them with the knowledge that they need/expect to make informed purchasing choices, and determine whether some of the currently available information could be eliminated/modified because it is not actually relevant to consumers, it is ambiguous or it is misleading. - Assess whether the voluntary information that operators provide to consumers meets their needs. - Analyse the extent to which the information provided for in Article 38 of Regulation (EU) No 1379/2013 on the common organisation of the markets in fishery and aquaculture products is understandable for the consumer and what meanings it conveys.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union is a major market for fishery and aquaculture products (FAPs). In nominal terms, the EU is the world's largest market for such products. Expenditure per capita on FAPs is only a third of that in Japan, the world leader, but more than three times as much as in the United States. The European Commission's overall aim in this area is to secure a safe and stable supply of seafood, sustainable fisheries, healthy seas and prosperous coastal communities for today's Europeans and future generations. This involves formulating, developing and implementing the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) - a set of rules for managing European fishing fleets, conserving fish stocks and managing the market for fishery and aquaculture products. In order to properly develop and implement changes to policies such as the CFP, the European Commission regularly sources economic statistics relating to the state of the fisheries and maritime industry, but also seeks out the views of its citizens and stakeholders. This Special Eurobarometer survey is the second on this topic, repeating questions first asked in a survey conducted in June 2016. It aims at improving understanding of the EU internal market for fishery and aquaculture products to allow operators to be more competitive and to support new strategies that can stimulate growth, strengthen economic activities in the internal market and lead to job creation. It will provide key information for operators to adapt their strategies to the changing needs of consumers and thus make the most of the opportunities of the Single Market. The survey will also explore consumers' understanding and trust of the information that accompanies fishery and aquaculture products, given that the rules on the labelling of these products changed in December 2014. This information ensures consumer protection within the EU and allows citizens to make informed purchasing choices. The main objectives of this survey are to: Understand consumer habits regarding fishery and aquaculture: how frequently do consumers eat and/or buy these products? What types of products do they buy? Where do they buy them? Find the factors that influence consumption; Explore the reasons for buying or eating fishery and aquaculture products, or not; Determine whether there is consumer preference for wild or farmed products, sea or freshwater products, processed or unprocessed products, or in terms of origin; Investigate what consumers think about the information accompanying fishery and aquaculture products and whether they trust information provided by the government, by certified authorities or by the brand or seller; Compare current figures with those from the June 2016 survey. This survey was carried out by the Kantar Public Brussels network in the 28 Member States of the European Union between 23rd of June and 6th of July. A total of 27,734 EU citizens from different social and demographic categories were interviewed face-to-face at home and in their native language on behalf of the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.

Book excerpt: New developments in the uses of the sea have given rise to new questions in the law of the sea since the beginning of the second millennium, and there are international endeavors to revise certain issues of maritime law. The Seminar, papers of which are collected in this volume, dealt with some examples of these developments. Participants were doctoral candidates of the International Max Planck Research School for Maritime Affairs and students of the University of Hamburg. Addressed are the internationalization of marine natural resources, the audit system of flag State's obligations, rights of land-locked and geographically disadvantaged States in the EEZ, the reform of the European fisheries policy and finally the Rotterdam Rules which are deemed to alter the carrier's obligations in the law of maritime transport. A report of the Seminar's excursion to several maritime institutions in New York City is also included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to provide assessments of multidecadal changes in resources and environments of the Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs) of the North Atlantic. Using the case study method, researchers examine the forces driving the changes and actions underway aimed at turning the corner from declining trends in biomass yields, toward recovery of depleted species populations and improvements in ecosystem integrity. Recently a distinguished group of 24 scientists argued eloquently that a new Sustainability Science was emerging that was focused on "meeting fundamental human needs while preserving the life support systems of planet Earth". The contributions contained in this volume are at the cutting edge of Sustainability Science and the results presented by the contributors are pertinent to one of the core questions: "How are long-term trends in environment and development, including consumption and population, reshaping nature-society interactions in ways relevant to sustainability?" (Science Vol. 292, 27 April 2001). The case studies demonstrate the utility of an ecosystem-based approach to the assessment and management of biomass yields and species sustainability. Movements toward ecosystem-based management have emerged from the case studies on the initiation of recoveries of several depleted groundfish stocks of the US Northeast Shelf LME; the collapse of the Newfoundland-Labrador Shelf cod; the assessment of physical and biological changes on the Scotian Shelf, West Greenland Shelf, Iceland Shelf LME, and the Faroe Plateau, the North Sea, and the Barents Sea LMEs. Uncertainties, with regard to environmental and human-generated forcing, are addressed in assessment of the states of the Iberian Coastal and Biscay-Celtic LMEs, and in broad-scale studies of the influences at the base of the food chain of climatic variability on the productivity and biodiversity of plankton communities of the North Atlantic. The volume concludes with an insightful perspective on the approaches used and the results reported by the eminent marine scientist and former President of ICES, Professor Gotthilf Hempel.
