Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects that music therapy, and songwriting in particular, have on the family members of hospice patients. Participants (N=8) were chosen from an available group of families who experienced songwriting in hospice care, whether the patient wrote all or part of a song, or the family wrote a song about the patient. Individual interviews were conducted with each participant, and each participant answered a series of questions regarding their hospice experience, their perception of their loved one's experience, their bereavement, and their experience with music therapy. Results showed that families found hospice overall to be a very positive experience, and that music therapy played a large role in all their perceptions of hospice care. All participants initiated discussion of music therapy and their family's song early in the interview, and all had many positive things to say about the music therapist, the song, and the meaning the song had for them and their family. In the majority of cases, the song written in music therapy was played at the memorial or funeral service. Other common themes noted were that for many, the song sent a message, embodied their loved one, or gave their loved one a sense of purpose. Many of the participants knew nothing or little of music therapy prior to their experience in hospice, and they all found it to be rewarding, and much more involved than they expected. Many of the participants still listen to the song, although a few indicated that it was difficult for them or that they could not listen to it yet. However, they all said that the song has a special meaning for them.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate Spanish language repertoire with Spanish-speaking patients, as well as specific techniques and challenges used by music therapists in the hospice setting. An electronic survey was sent out to music therapists via email and social media, whereby 17 music therapists completed the survey. The first section of the survey asked what Spanish language songs music therapists use most frequently in the following genres: Traditional/folk; Patriotic; Religious; Popular; Children0́9s; and Other. The second section of the survey consisted of approaches and techniques music therapists used in their practice with Spanish-speaking patients, as well as well as challenges they have encountered. The results of this study revealed a total of 49 songs used by music therapists. Results also indicated the music therapy intervention, 0́−singing for reminiscence,0́+ as their most frequently used. Regarding challenges faced when working with Spanish-speaking patients, language barrier was a common factor that music therapists faced. Further results are discussed in the paper. A 15-question survey was electronically disseminated to board-certified music therapists (MT-BCs) with clinical experience working as music therapists in the hospice setting. Potential participants were located through the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) database. A total of 86 participants responded to the survey, and the data from 82 of the participants was analyzed. Participants indicated that they use all four methods of music therapy and many different types of music experiences as a lullaby intervention in hospice music therapy. Hospice music therapists use lullaby interventions as indicated by a variety of patient/family needs. The most common needs were those related to comfort/relaxation (73.17%), pain/discomfort (60.98%), and anxiety (57.32%). These correlate to the most common intended outcomes of lullaby intervention in hospice music therapy, which are increasing relaxation/comfort (76.83%), decreased stress and anxiety for patients and/or families (74.39%), and decreasing pain/pain perception (37.80%). Participants indicated in an open-ended question their opinions about how using lullabies differs from other hospice music therapy interventions. Themes of how these interventions differ include comfort and relaxation, family and familiarity, and meeting specific patient needs. Results of this survey indicate that music therapists are using lullaby interventions in the hospice setting to meet the needs of hospice patients and their families." -- Page 5.
