Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of the study was to improve the airflow characteristics of a low speed, open-circuit wind tunnel to allow its use for studying the impaction mechanisms of particles on collectors. Modifications to the settling chamber and transition section of the tunnel are described that resulted in an improved speed range and an acceptable constant turbulence level. Vertical and horizontal profiles of the longitudinal turbulent velocity component were obtained with a constant temperature anemometer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There are many practical applications of flow over bodies that are immersed in a fluid. Some examples include air flow around aeroplanes and vehicles, or the flow of water around submarines and fish. When a body is wholly immersed in a fluid flow, such as in the examples given, the flows are called external flows. Much of the information regarding external flows has come from experiments carried out on scale models of objects that actually experience external flow conditions. Most of the data that is obtained on scale models comes from the analysis of models in wind tunnels. Over the past fifty to sixty years there has possibly been a thousand wind tunnels that have been designed and built specifically for the purpose of finding the aerodynamic characteristics of models in fluid flow. Because of the numerous applications of wind tunnels, there is no one unique design for the wind tunnel, and for the system of measuring necessary information that results from forces on models in the wind tunnel. For a considerable amount of time, a small low speed wind tunnel has been m the possession of the University of Ballarat Engineering department. This wind tunnel was not operational due to a failure of its driving gear, nor was there any system for measuring forces on models in the wind tunnel. The aim of this project, then, was to design a system for measuring forces on models in the wind tunnel, and to repair the driving gear to ensure the operation of the wind tunnel. " -- Abstract/Synopsis.

Book excerpt: To achieve very low velocities using the large pulley required closing the inlet vanes of the blower to a nearshut position. This caused a churning effect to take place in the blower housing, resulting in a pulse being set up in the tunnel. This pulse was the result of what might be called inlet air starvation and it caused the velocity variations mentioned above. Using the smaller pulley reduced the fan RPM and thus provided slower tunnel velocities at wider vane openings.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An open-loop low-speed wind tunnel is one of the easiest ways to study about aerodynamics for undergraduate studies. The objectives of this project are to propose a design with detail analysis, fabrication of a small scale open-loop low-speed wind tunnel and to validate the designed wind tunnel through performance testing with the existing instrumentations available in the laboratory. The wind tunnel was designed by considering the essential parts of the wind tunnel with the proper justifications before modelled with Computer Aided Design (CAD) and then tested using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). After obtaining the desired simulation result, the designed wind tunnel was fabricated and then followed by the test models. Then the wind tunnel undergoes the performance testing for validation and calibration. For the Ahmed Body flow pattern testing, the flow behaves just like the flow pattern tested in calibrated wind tunnel. For the case study testing, a cylinder model was used and the highest flow speed is 0.4317 m/s while the slowest flow speed is 0.1401 m/s. However for the case study experiment, the result obtained is not at its best condition as there is wake flow generated around the cylinder body and further improvement is required to obtain the undoubtedly results.
